Title: Manual (cheep! Lol!) boost controlers
Post by: Jimi_Hendrix on February 04, 2009, 08:51:56 PM
anyone used a manual boost controler? I\'m thinking of getting one for my 90 FC3S because they are WAY cheeper than fancy electronic ones and they sit in the engine bay so no need to clutter the cabin!

Plus i found out that i\'m prob gonna need to shell out on a wideband Air/fuel ratio thingy as well to be able to tinker with a HKS GCC.:reallymad

Also is the standard FC boost gage really that bad? Or can i just keep it. I HATE a cabin full of gauges! Looks too "fast and furious" for me.

F*CKING HATE TURBO CARS!:reallymad:reallymad:reallymad To much to think about!:Nono!

Turn up the boost on the FC, Injectors will max out and you will lose the engine. And yes the OEM gauge is that bad, its either on or off lol

So you cant adjust the boost at all on the FC? Without bigger injectors?

The stock ECU has limiters on it, I think its set at 8psi, after that it will cut fuel, which isn\'t good, you could get a fuel cut defender which will remove this limiter. Personally I wouldn\'t mess with boost unless you have a different ECU and different injectors, once you max an injector out (at about 91%) it can\'t cope with the pulses and only fires 1/2 the fuel in, this only happens at high rpm, so at high rpm it will run lean and then go pop.

Well i have an HKS PFC Fcon piggyback ecu. That im going to fit along with an HKS GCC an FCD and i\'m going to port the wastegate and fit my 3" stright through exhaust and downpipe.

Hopefully once all that HKS s#it is in and programed it should prevent running lean after the ECU has been "tricked"

I dont want to adjust boost through the roof. Just bump it up a notch or two. Would be happy with 250 BHP at the end of it all. It is a daily drive road car after all.

Was just wondering if manual boost controlers are a bad idea. The cheepnes of them is what sets alarm bells ringing for me. I mean i know theres not much to them but still.

Thanks bro.

Are you sure you need the FCD with the piggyback ecu? im sure that the ecu will have that function in built?

im sure you could have the gauges built in somewhere subtle/hidden. if your tuning it you want to make sure all is running 100%, unless you want to risk a 2k rebuild bill, well thats my experiance anyway :)

Pretty sure a PFC-Fcon dosnt have an FCD I think better versions of it like the silver and gold versions have one but not mine :(

I\'m actually coming round to the idea of gauges! Lol! Been looking at pics and its not so bad just having 2 on the door pillar. Its when you have like a BILLION telling you whether or not your underwear needs changed or not! That things start to look a bit crap, in a road car anyway. Lol!

how about one of these as an alternatve? first ones expensive, and im not sure how it works etc, im sure plenty of others will know

the 2nd could be usefull too as an alternitive, but not as comprahensive.

unfortunetly, buying and installing gauges is expensive, have a look at the price of defi gauges..and there mostly electrical, and need a sender unit thingy which costs too...bloody expensive overall!
