The foam is part of the bumper.... people are talking about the crash bar! basicaly it is an ally structure that goes on to the fron of the car before the buper gets fitted.... the only diff between pre 99 & the 99 ones are the holes for the side light indicators are slightly different!! you can run without one but it would make the front weak in a collision :(

it is quite easy to adapt your existing one to accept 99 spec front bumper. just have to open the indicator holes up more and change shape .

thanks for the replys, i guess it will start making sense when i get the old one off! the bumper i have is a second hand genuine mazda item but does\'nt have foam on the back either, its like shell with with a metal trim on the top near the lights.
cheers

hi tommy,I changed mine over but was lucky enough to get the bar as well.
When you take yours off you will see what everyone means, its just a piece of white moulded plastic that sits behind the bumper cover if you like.In turn that bolts onto the ends of the chassis legs.
What some people do is simply cut off the ends of this to allow the more shaped side/indicator unit to fit & allow the new cover to go far enough back into place. Or as has been suggested, shape out the existing holes to fit.
Also your gonna be left with a lot of extra plastics from round the oil cooler/coolers depending on which model you have.

One last thing. If at all possible try to remove your towing eye from your drivers side chassis leg as this sits exactly where your new bumper wants to go,I just simply hammered mine across, but it would damage the bumper if you had to tow, trust me i found out the hard way.

Best of luck & you\'ll need rubber hands for the six bolts that hold it onto the wings unless you take the inner guards out.
