Question:
What exhaust type would be best?
Option 1: win exit

Option 2: ingle exit

Hey guys, Just been thinking about this a lot for my RX7, I will be going for a 4" system...so....Would it be best to have a single pipe and mod the rear bumper to remove the indent for the other pipe? Should I keep it twin? I was just wondering as lots of systems go from 3" to the Y piece, which goes to a smaller diameter, which might be restrictive.
I was thinking if just having a single pipe would be easier (and cheaper) for the power? I do love my twin pipes, but I don\'t know if they are going to be ok for the 400bhp I am aiming for. Also I don\'t know how much a twin 4" system will cost!
I won\'t be going this mad with a single exhaust though:

Or this...

single exit will be cheaper right? :D
Yeah I am guessing it will be lol, I will have to go custom though, cause all the off the shelf exhausts are only 3". Im guessing if I go to the 4" system the exhaust note will be lower?
Twin exit - FC looks better balanced ;)
does the pipe splitting in two cause any kind of turbulence or back pressure?
Mine\'s a twin exit and I\'m sure its 4". maybe 3 1/2 or 3 3/4 out of the turbo to the Y piece. It was about £800 but that was ages ago (previous owner ago). Can\'t remember the make but it\'s Korean
i voted twin, they look much better imho:driving
richard
I will have to have a look around as it looks like I will have to go custom as the systems you buy normally are for the stock turbo location, the new turbo will be different unless anyone has found an off the shelf catback 4" twin system?
twin on an FC for sure:3gears-rh
Ok, here is a question, 3" system or 4"? furthermore, if I go custom, how am I going to be able to get down there as I will need to fit the new turbo and new manifold for them to get the custom downpipe made, so would I need to fit the new turbo when I am down at the exhaust shop?
do most aftermarket turbo in similar position? if so then get someone who has got one fitted n get them to measure for u?
do u really need 4"?
IF i get mine done b4 u then can giv u measurements..
My Racing Beat is a 3 1/2 inch throughout and drops down to a bit less for the rear boxes, thats a twin system. I think there is nothing worse than a rear bumper with cutouts for two exhausts and only one fitted. It always looks as if there is something missing. You can pick up the entire stainless twin system for about £400 if you are lucky with customs. I am selling a single large bore system thats will be £400 delivered to your door, Tannabe and OBX so its in this country and ready to fit. The guy will not wait though as he has a buyer for it this friday. Well down pipe anyway.
I voted twins all the way.
Just to try and convince to go twins, think also that as long as the exhaust is well made, the Y section is the correct length then you will not loose BHP because of it. it will also quieten it down a bit as well so you can do away with a centre box.
Pete, your system is exactly what im looking for, im still wondering how I am going to be able 2 get there and swap the turbos over so that the downpipe is correct, unless I get the system done in 2 sections, ie catback first which is flanged onto the current midbox and keep the stock downpipe and midbox, then get a downpipe made and a custom midbox to make up the gap? Im still wondering how I am able to get the car to a custom place with the new turbo fitted.
I don\'t think you\'ll need 4" unless your going for over 500 BHP !
3" all the way to the back (so 2 x 2.5" is still good for twin exit) will be more than enough as long as your exhaust is free flowing (proper mandrel bent jobby and good back boxes filled with decent wool wadding - not some cheapo loft insulation that will blow out or clog in a hearbeat).
Should I go for this kit:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mazda-RX7-FC3S-1986-1991-3-Cat-Back-Exhaust-System_W0QQitemZ270319904953QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item270319904953&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318
It looks like the UK version of KrisD1s full system (I have found that he can get the full system ie turbo back, as the downpipe is for LHD cars and won\'t clear the steering rack)
Should I perhaps go for that as a cat back and then go custom downpipe and midbox?
definatley twin, i made a 3" tuerbo back system all the way back, had some big jap chimneys and the noise wasnt ott sounds lovely on rev up, i cant see the need for 4" unless youve got a huge ass turbo, that system looks pretty decent my exhaust is marine grade stainless 314, but 304 stainless is very decent, good price to.
that system is by SSautochrome and it will mate very nicely with either a OBX or japspeed downpipe as they are all made by same people. Thats the combination on my cab. Think even the XSpower ones are ssautochrome as well. I have had no problems so far on mine and it does growl rather nicely.
how loud do you want it? i bought a cheap cat-back for my FD and it was rediculus....attack of the killer bees kinda sound :2Confused i ended up buying another from WGT which had been tried and tested and sounded looooovleeeeee :burnout
i\'d say give them a call first, spend a small amount extra first time round rather than take a risk in the ebay jobby
hope i havent confused things :)
richard
Thing is there is no risk as its been tried and tested on several cars including mine. With that particular exhaust it does not matter if its bought of Ebay in USA,UK or some private sale its still made by the same people SSAutochrome. I\'m not saying they\'re the best cos they are not but its value for money. The only option is to have one made, really easy for any decent exhaust chap to make as its so straight, just need a downpipe but even that could be made. I doubt you will get much change from £500 doing it that way in high grade stainless and some quality boxes and tips.
Noise is related to gas velocity to the power 8, therefore a single exit is much much louder than twin( gas velocity is half on a twin compared to a single, roughly LOL). I have a single stright through system 3inch which I swapped for my old 3inch twin, and the noise levels are so much louder! it is the loudest road car I have ever heard!!!
Did get the whole system turbo back for £150 brand new, SS304 as well.

LHD and RHD downpipe is the same! Rumours are a killer. The downpipe and back of the turbo are no where near the steering rack!!.

I asked the seller of the full kit that KrisD1 has and they said that it won\'t fit the RHD cars, which is why the UK seller only sells the catback part of the system.
Btw, if I get a standard cat-back system, will an aftermarket downpipe and decat fit if its connected to the manifold that moves the turbo forward? I know HKS have a manifold that keeps an aftermarket turbo in the same place, but other makes move the turbo forward eg:
HKS manifold (its central)

Most other manifolds (including mine)

Isn\'t that just a pipe with a flange at the end then lol
Just checked the janspeed site: http://www.japspeed.co.uk/Mazda-RX7/Mazda-RX7/Mazda-RX7-FC3S-Cat-Back-Dual-System/p-13-1-194/
Thats the same pic as the one online and they say they use the T304 stainless steel :)

I disagree - some downpipes can foul the steering rack on RHD cars.

No I got this from Ebay UK, the guy told me it wouldn\'t fit, but I sent him an email saying yes it will, so I bought it and fitted it.
Surprise surprise it fit. £149 the whole lot

The only kits on ebay are for a cat back, I havn\'t yet found a turbo back system on the UK ebay lol was yours a single or a twin system?
Right......... the kit mentioned above does fit a LH and RH car, I know because Its what is on my car and what I posted at the very beginning of this thread. Although my downpipe was a Japspeed item it is infact made by ssautochrome. For mine I purchased a a single system inc of downpipe and then the twin system as well. Both came from within the UK at the time and I only paid £450 for the lot shipped. I was just lucky with the Ebay auction. They both came from different traders. They both mated together virtually perfectly as i suspected being made from the same company. Oh and I sold the rear single section for £80 so the exhaust was even cheaper and i got a twin sytem out of it.
It must take a lot of downpipe to even foul the steering and if anything it would be an aftermarket manifold/turbo that will do this, this problem is more applicable to the FD.
I ran an aftermarket stainless manifold and tried an Racing beat and the ssautochrome downpipe and both fit just fine.

Was watching ebay one day and one came up, £149. Then I got an email saying it was an error and it wont fit UK RHD car, I\'ve told the rest. I\'m sure you can see from the Video its single
Like pete said, all you have to do is look at the position of the turbo in relation to steering components. Then you\'l realise \'How can the downpipe interfear with that\' I swear its all some rumour thats been doing the rounds.
A custom manifold is a different story.
Best thing to do would be to get intouch with a seller of the catback and ask for the whole lot, see what they say.

This is who I got mine from.
Just been looking on Ebay in the US and UK and with the exchange rate at present it would be cheaper to get a system made. The prices are at least a £100 dearer than they were a year ago. Seems the popularity of the FC now is pumping the prices up. The FD went through the same saga.
Hmm I will have a look around then, I could go custom turbo to cat and then get a catback system off the shelf.
I just saw this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Turbo-Back-Catback-Downpipe-Exhaust-RX-7-FC3S-86-92_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em63Q2el1177QQhashZitem150320274515QQitemZ150320274515QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
I will see if they just do the downpipe and decat but I understand about the exchange rate, it sucks lol
If I get a turbo back system for the stock turbo, is is easy to get a downpipe to bolt straight onto the new turbo and onto the rest of the system?
Found it:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Down-Pipe-Test-Pipe-Downpipe-Testpipe-RX-7-86-92-FC3S_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1205Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318Q7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a50QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem110336337352QQitemZ110336337352QQptZRaceQ5fCarQ5fParts
That item above works out at £200 delivered, that includes the decat pipe which I have found hard to find for a 3" system. I have asked for some specs on the downpipe to see if it will clear the steering rack. (ie the lengh from the turbo to the first down bend)

That is the exact same one I have, I paid £149, 2 weeks ago, I\'ve only had it on the car a week!! + £8 shipping
And I got it off the ebay seller that sells the catbacks in the auction I linked, just get intouch with them, dont go getting a custom one. The fit is perfect on these exhaust systems
I might just go for the downpipe and test pipe from the US and then get the twin exit from the UK and bolt them together :) then all I need to do is get a custom downpipe when I change the turbo :D
You can still keep the downpipe, just that the end will be cut and piece fabricated to suit your turbo. Either way its still going to cost to have a twin system whichever way you look at it. Worth it though.

Would you suggest I just get the catback from ebay? or should I go custom catback system? Or should I get the catback and the downpipe off the shelf? Im just thinking that if I get an off the shelf exhaust system, then the pipes will be the correct place for when I change the downpipe, then I could just get a performance aftermarket downpipe for a T4 turbo which will bolt straight onto the decat pipe as its in the same place as OEM. The main issue I have with my exhaust at the mo is that its a 1 piece system, so I can\'t just change one section, I know that I could get a catback and get someone to weld a flange onto the midbox, but im not sure if the midbox is the same place as OEM so im not sure if an off the shelf catback system would fit (ie the flange where the cat would be on the OEM system might be in the middle of the midbox on the current system) Plus are they able to make the exit of my midbox a 3" exit?
You know what I would do to save all this hassle?
Just wait till you get your turbo and then get someone to make a system for you in one go rather than all the swopping and changing.
But to be honest if you got your complete system now then trying to find a downpipe just to suit your turbo will be nigh on impossible and it would have to be fabricated anyway so that might as well be done to your new downpipe.
How will I be able to get my car with the new turbo to a exhaust place? Would I bring it along with me and they fit it there?
Why not. You could fit your turbo if they will let you and then they can go from there. Might be best to see them first hand so they know what they need etc. I have a powerflow garage up the road from me and thats exactly what they do.
Cool :) I was getting worried about if they would be able to do the swap due to the different manifold and refitting the intercooler pipework and stuff, would you recomend the powerful garage you went to?
Powerflow-yes but they are a bit expensive. Surely there are chaps on here that can do the work with you? Now that would be better especially if they live more local.
Quote from: pdtaylor18;580583Powerflow-yes but they are a bit expensive. Surely there are chaps on here that can do the work with you? Now that would be better especially if they live more local.
Hmm point taken lol just need to get all the other bits in before I can fit the turbo, plus I need a T3>T4 convertor plate. Im just wondering if its worth getting a cat-back fitted in the mean time arg I don\'t know :( why does my current exhaust have to be so restrictive lol
I have a T3/T4 convertor plate adapter, even has a hole for a temp sensor probe. These fit the stainless T4 manifolds you see kicking around on ebay and you can then fit a T3 on a T4 manifold.
What I want is a aftermarket Manifold that accepts the standard Exhaust side of S5 turbo without paying silly money.
