I expect this thread will generate a fair bit of response.
The will no doubt be ppl who say each of those is either the bet or worst re-builder they know of.
If I were you I try to visit as many as you can - talk to them and see if you feel comfortable with what they say and like them.
It\'ll be a lot of money wherever you go and I wouldn\'t like to be the one who recommended you to somewhere if it all goes wrong.
The old saying that you get what you pay for springs to mind, but in the current credit crunch you would also expect some good deals.
I doubt anyone on here has had a rebuild done at ALL of the above so it would be hard to compare.
I expect, like me, most go where they\'re comfortable and feel they\'re dealing with an honest guy.
Good luck
John
Theres also Ross at Dragon, Jaydee in London. Both of who I reckon will be quite competitive on pricing.
Also, Hayward may give you a 2 year warranty, but clarify every little aspect of the warranty offered by any tuner. Last thing you want is have your warranty rejected.
Speak to Jason at Super 7 Autos, hes a nice guy and seems to run a clean ship, ive bought quite a few bits from him and he sells on a fair few of his rebuilt cars.
Without tempting fate my own FD was rebuilt by Jimmy\'s and it has been problem free after 6k of motoring so i would also recommend speaking to him too.
JayDee all the way
^ as above JayDee\'s your man :yes
Jaydee is the Jedi master !
Perhaps see if you can buy a working engine out of another car? then you can spend time rebuilding the current one to either sell on (recoup costs) or to rebuild yourself :)
whats the cost of a 13b rebuild @ this Jedi master xD
use the force he will :)

The force is strong with this one....
Are the prices you mention \'quotes\' or quotes. IE: is that how much they *think* it will cost presume it doesn;t need x or y; or is that a worst case quote.
You may go for the cheaper \'quote\' only to find out that there were caveats on that \'quote\' and once the block is apart you suddenly need new parts not covered by the original cheap \'quote\'.
I would find out what exactly the price is covering and what the worst case cost may be before you commit to a builder. I\'d also look at what backup you have in case there is a problem (IE: warranty, longevity of company to honour any warranty in xxx miles time, etc).
you might as well get it ported (if its not ported already) also while the block is being stripped :D
interesting post. i called a few places about price to do some work on my fc (fit new tub n few other things) and most places were similar in price but then, as some ppl brought to my attention, you need to take into account if sth goes wrong (snapped bold etc)
also labour cost at company A might be more expensive than company B but company B might have cheaper parts than Company A.
its all swings and roundabout really.
each tuner has their own \'speciality\' be it super safe rebuilds, mad drag cars, fast street cars, BIG POWER etc..
i think depending what you want out of it.. go with whoever is best known for that.
this prob dont help but thats how im thinking as if my worst case scenario of my cooling system that went pop..
i just need to find out who;s the daddy of building a fast road car :rollin and is able to give a recession killing price for it :D
PS good luck with your choice :)
Mine was done by Pip @ WGT. The receipts show it was pricey (~4.5k), but that included turbo rebuild as well. And like everything - you get what you pay for - in this case about 50years of combined rotary experience. (Thats not to say everyone else is crap btw!!! cos\' they most definately aren\'t!) But IMO, Pip and Dave are the men!!
Quite a few things to take into concideration, I could have taken my engine only 40 miles up the road but I never as it was a bit too pricey but I know I would have got a good job from Jimmies. Carl Hayward is now doing mine as he did offer me a very good deal (FC Lump) and he split the engine in front of me to see what was wrong. I need 3 end/inter plates for this as they are scrap and worn badly, from mazda well over £1000 so you never know what they might find wrong. Most of the tuners will base a price on an average rebuild but they could all be different. If you are mechanically minded then take the block to the tuner yourself. I saved a lot of money doing this and most charge £600 for this privialige, dont forget you will have to get the car to them as well on a trailer, more expence and fuel costs.
just add up all the little expences and that might sway you one way or another. You could be cheeky and say to them to pick the car up for you for free. As many have said before its whatever you feel comfortable with, whoever gives you that warm feeling and its not always necesarily about the cheapest or dearest, some builders simply have higher running costs than someone who does it in their garage. The parts are the same, time to rebuild are the same and the expertise of a \'rebuild\' will be the same.
In this day and age I think that there are deals to be had so just do some haggling and I am sure some will drop their price or offer you something that suits you one way or another
