Post by: troy619 on January 22, 2009, 11:12:29 PM
Had a memo from VOSA 2day about performance/lowd exaust when it come to ur yearly MOT, Basicly it says that if there is a non starndard exaust fitted and it is lowder than the standerd exaust when manufatured then it will be a FAIL!!!!

has any 1 heard bout this cuz if thats true thats going 2 put loads of modded rexs of the road:

Yes this is correct but i think it\'s pretty much always been like this, the official line is :-

"b. a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition."

Depends what they expect from the similar vehicle lol as it doesn\'t actually say "must be standard"

It\'s one of those things that gets played up over the internet but has little real world effect. Has been doing the rounds for years. Like the "you need to be 18/21/36/52 to start driving" rumours.

I have heard of this before someone I know with a rex failed his mot on his exhaust being too noisy! Was advised to go and fit a silencer!

I\'d suggest finding a sympathetic MOT station...

a similar thread was on drift works. The conclusion was that there\'s nothing new

Wooo FC guys win with their precat rotarys :D plus the problem with exhaust noise levels is that its compaired to a STANDARD car.....mine is the only FC around here so I don\'t know what they are going to compare it to lol :D

Copied from another forum:

"Then there\'s a good chance you wont pass an MOT. (Taken from bulletin as delivered to mot stations)

Any exhaust fitted to a vehicle that changes the sound from standard in even the slightest way is an instant fail.

So no standard system NO MOT...

And to anyone who says its always been the case it hasnt - this is new, since the rule has now been changed and re-written, applying the word Standard into the terms. Rather than the original Faulty. Which now makes aftermarket performance parts a problem (accordingly)

Changed the reason to fail from this..

a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.

to this...

a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition

So in short: If you have a none OEM system fitted and it makes your car sound fruity, the tester is well within his rights to refuse you a test certificate now.

So is everyone ready for road side checks, cause its gonna be a nice little money earner for the government."

Both paragraphs, both old and new contain the ambiguous phrase "clearly unreasonably above".  The old paragraph is saying \'it cant be much noisier than a similar type of car - which is very vague, and the new one is saying \'it cant be much noisier than the a similar vehicle with a standard exhaust\'.

There is no mention of specific empirical values, such as within a certain percentage difference in noise level.  Its completely open to interpretation.  So - you\'re fine with an after market exhaust, as long as its not ridiculously loud.

So for all intents and purposes - nothing has changed apart from the type of part that the noise is compared to.  Your still knackered if you get a git of an MOT guy, or a VOSA guy.

Come on guys, this is psoted up on every modified car forum on a regular basis - it\'s nothing new. Basically it\'s not going to get thrown at you unless your car is crazy loud, or your MTO tester has a chip on his shoulder - as has always been the case.

It\'s also subjective - one man\'s loud is another\'s quiet.
