Title: help my fc!
Post by: Adam fc on January 16, 2009, 12:48:43 AM
hi,just go a few questions chaps, ive recently purchased an 1988 fc with 94.000 miles on the clock and ive seen many an fc with rebuilds at a lower millage than mine.It has had regular oil and filter changes and im just concerened when i should condem it to a rebuild at the garage?? Also whilst driving home my fuel gauge suddenly hit rock bottom and hasen\'t returned to its former postion.ive been filling the car right up as its the only way to determin the amount of fuel in the car\'would this be simply down to a bad earth? i really don\'t want to hae to call out an automotive electrician?? many thanks adam.

is ur fc  TII or EGI?
TII can go anywhere form 100k to 150k until a rebuild is required (depends on how its been treated in past life)
EGI can go 150k plus as less stress on internal bits than a TII
If you worried about rebuild then best get it compression tested. 6 and above is ok (think 8 is straight after rebuild)
below 6 and best start saving for a rebuild.

as for refueling, TII can go about 200 miles from full to 1/4 tank. best not to let the fuel get too low else when u twang it round corners the engine might run a bit lean due to the way the fuel pump in the tank is placed (not very good design)

hope that helps
(if i am incorrect about anything then pls correct me)

hope u enjoying ur FC =)
u should post some pics up if you have not done so already

hey,yeh thanks ill get a compression test done asap.its a egi,i didn\'t want a t11 because of engine wear like u said.sorry i probably wasn\'t too clear when regarding to the the fuel gauge i think its actually buggered lol,ive had the haynes manual out checking the wiring diagram and ive had a rummage behind the dials to no success, but ive heard that mazda skimmped abit on the soldering process,so i don\'t know if its related?? ill get some pics asap.thanks mate.Adam

well if the probelms not behind the dials then surely there could be a break in the circuit anywhere up to the fuel tank?

as for engine wear, low compression isn\'t a problem on the egi\'s, ive heard of them running into the mid 4\'s and 5\'s. The problems start to arise if compresseion is un-even. As long as you let warm up before you drive it like you stole you\'ll be fine. Still would recommend a compression test to just see how your car is doing.
Does you car start fine on its own when its warm? This is usually a sign of ok compression :D

also remember to let it warm up before you switch it off for long periods of time :D

oh, and welcome :D

awesome, i usually let mine get up to just under a quarter of the temp gauge before i fully press the loud pedal or take it past 3.5k/revs

Thing is dont let the paranoia set in so early in the game, as said above unless you start having starting problems or rough idles then dont even bother about rebuilding it.  The only good thing about an early rebuild is that you will more than likely get away with just a refresh with new seals etc and especially on your mileage. Once you start getting into the 120K+ then things will start to wear and highly likely housings/bearings and the like will need to be replaced but you never know with these engines.  Best talk to a builder who will talk you though the best compromise.

Lets face it at the moment its running sweet for you and more than likely will for several years to come as these cars generally do not generate high annual mileage.  Enjoy the car, spend the minimum amount of money to keep it going and it will probably see you through until you get bored and want a TII.

On the fuel side then check the electrical connector in the boot, have a play with it but it may be that or the gauge. I might have a gauge but need a pic of your cluster to be sure.
