Title: Advice please
Post by: SleepyDude on January 15, 2009, 12:59:35 AM
Hello,

Well this is my first post on this site, i have been an RX7 owner for a year now.

My 1995 RX7 has been maintained by Jason @ Super7auto\'s and a few bits lately with Carl @ Haywoods rotary. The problem i face is that my car has reached 40k miles and now one thing after another is going wrong.

I worried that car is coming to rebuild time and am wondering whether to get the rebuild now or wait and see what happens? Iv been told a rebuild and mapping now will set me back £2500 while if i wait till she goes bang it will be £3500.

What do you guys think? Now at 40k or risk it? the other reason im worried is my second turbo is now cycling at the wastegate and needs to be remapped.

Is it worth trying the re-map or shall i get the money and go whole hog?

Cheers
Mark

Hi mate and welcome!

I think you will find that most peoples responses will say, firstly get a compression test carried out and if possible a pressure test of the coolant system and then decide on your route after these tests.

Its always better to get it rebuilt while its a runner. As for the turbo, I would decide on this after the above two tests.

Hope that helps
Ash

As above really.

If you do leave it till it goes pop it will cost you considerably more and ill require more new parts.

Whats the spec on the car? Standard twins? Single?

In addition to costing more for the engine itself, depending on how it goes pop you may be looking at new turbos etc too (eg if a tip break, and gets spat through the turbo, it often knackers the turbo fins).

from the description \'second turbo\' im guessing you\'re still on twin sequential turbos?  Are you saying that at swap-over the waste-gate just blows, so you don\'t get any boost to the engine?

Well I took the advice and got the compresion test and it\'s;

Front rotor
7.1
7.1
7.1
Rear rotor
6.5
6.8
6.9

So not to bad but I think it\'s time to start saving up. The second turbo when the car was dyno\'d was rapidly jumping up and down and was put down to the mapping being off, it was last remapped a year and a half ago.

I\'m trying to get the car ready to take down the track at Santa pod for rotor stock6 LOL just hoping it won\'t blow if I push it.

Thats fine mate, plenty of life left, and its pretty even. YOU DONT NEED A REBUILD

Also of your twins are jumpy, its not likely to be the map, more likely the rats nest/ancilliary. Get it checked out, and if nessecary re mapped.

and BTW, no rotary should \'blow up\', especially with old age. regular oil changes and good maintainance will see many years of motoring for you.

The duty cycle on the wastegate is likely not right which is part of the mapping process. Having not mapped it ourselves though there could be other factors such as solenoids involved.
