Title: From Evo\'s to RX7
Post by: Flynn on January 09, 2009, 12:54:42 PM
First of all, just wanted to say hi and apologise for my first post being full of questions that have probably answered several times before :0

Looking at buying a FD in the next 2 weeks or so. Will mainly be used as a track / drift toy, may do some sprinting also. Always fancied a RX7, but so far, not had the chance to own one. Ive imported cars myself a number of times this will probably the way I will go again this time. (Although the ex rate is a bit poo at the mo)

My car history so far has been :-

2001 Evo 7 GSR
2001 Evo 6 RSX
1996 Celica GT-Four
2005 Evo VIII MR FQ 300
2001 BMW M3
2001 Evo VII RS

As you can see, nearly all have been 4wd, except from the M3, which I thought was a bit boring tbh. Looking for something RWD as I did a couple of drift days at Oulton in the VII RS last year and was a hoot. All RWD cars seemed to be having all the fun.

Ive got my mind made up on a Type RS or RZ. Do they both have a rear LSD?? Or is it just Post 95 RZ and post 96 RS?? Tried searching but cant find a definite answer. It is wise to rule out the touring, RB etc...? Dont want want an auto.

What power does the stock engine take? Is a single turbo conversion preferable? How many miles before a rebuild? Is it around 60k or can it be variable depending on what power has been run?

Will be looking for around 400/400 from the car if possible? Whats needed for this? Engine mods or ill a stock engine take this? Is a brake upgrade advisable?

Again, sorry for all the questions, but a couple days of reading and Im still no wiser? Rest assured, I\'ll be paying my way on this site as soon as Ive found my RX.

Thanks in advance

not sure on the model with the LSD but TBH you can always put a 1.5 or 2 way diff in any car.

engine wise if all the ancillaries are working and its serviced regularly you wont have any problems. the only thing with importing one, you carnt guarantee weather or not it has been rebuilt or looked after.

power wise is all down to the tuning, porting, what turbo and how much boost.

single turbo would be the best option for 400bhp but expect the costs to build up quite fast.

oh and welcome, keep us updated on how you get on car hunting.

Welcome aboard!
In the current climate you may get a better deal from one that is already in the U.K.
My \'96 RS has the strengthend LSD (as standard) don\'t know when they started fitting it though sorry! And you get bigger disc\'s and twin oil coolers too!!

Cheers both.

Quick question. Is there any way to tell if the engine has been rebuilt? In the case where you just taking someones word for it? :3Confused

best thing to do would be to call the specialist up who rebuilt it, or get a compression test done so you at least know it\'s good!

My advice would be dont worry about the models etc, all very similar. The important thing is to buy the best car you can, not the cheapest!

Cash isnt really an issue. Pretty sure If after a post 95 model. Is 7.8 accross the board decent compression. Or is that getting close to a rebuild?

I always preferred the RS models myself. No AYC, ACD or ABS :evillaugh

Had a 6 RSX and a VII RS.

Looking at a RX7 on Jap Yahoo. Has a T51R fitted. Would this be very laggy?

Welcome to the club. As Ross says (Dragon) it best to get the best car you can afford and not worry so much on model. You can change part easily and upgrade everything as and when you need to. Even in standard twin turbo form you can still have loads of fun:D
Sounds like you\'ve been doing your research though and looking at a certain car in particular. Good figures on the engine so wouldn\'t worry there :D

looks nice, need to find out the spec\'s of it though.

it will be laggy but it all depends on the porting of the engine (if any)

Very nice car, looks nice in white, just as the guys said! Think Blitzboy runs a T51, doesn\'t he? And a few others IIRC Warthog? Both very very fast cars, so it clearly can be made to work well. Rear wheel drive FTW!

Looks like a nice example in the yahoo auction.
btw All FDs as standard have a Torsen LSD, there is no "strengthend" version just different final drive ratios.
If you doing drifting quite a bit then an aftermarket clutch type LSD would be better

Should I be put off by earlier cars? Or should I just go on condition? Im not suggesting I buy a shed just because its a 1999 car, but if a decent 1992/93 model came up. Should I consider it?

Always get the best you can afford. There really isn\'t a lot between the different models and you can always change stuff after you\'ve got the car.

The later models had a better ECU (16 instead of 8 bit IIRC) but since you\'d have to change that anyway to run a big single, it\'d be the better quality trim, later model lights and not much else making the difference up really. Like has been said, condition rather than age is the key

That white one has been on there a while, It has a pretty crappy HKS intercooler, but bar that its a good spec if you want to do one up.
To be honest though id look in the UK, I doubt that car will sell for less than a million, and with the exchange rate its just to much.

Your probably right. At least I can have a good look round one that is already over here.  Had a few cars over from Japan and sometimes it can be a bit hit and miss.
I may as well go for a decent standard model with good compression, then build it up to the spec I want myself.

I had a couple of D-Jet FC for my Evo, 2nd prices were around £350 for the D-Jet. £250/£275 for a L-Jet.

How much do 2nd hand Power FC go for RX7?
