basically me and friend have now decided were gunna drift a TII instead of a bimmer. We wont be spending a lot of money on the car, we were originally gunna go for under a grand with the bimmer. But a turbo rotary is tunable, so we are willing to spend more, as it means we wont want a new car when we want more power.
anyway, to the point!! Chances are we will be buying a high miler. And i was just wondering what these engines are like when the they blow. I know the 13b 6ports generally slowly wear down, and that the 13b rew\'s pretty much just go bang. So what are the TII engines like? ive read they can last 150k miles, i know this depends on how they are treated. We can deal with the engine be warn and producing less power for a while, but we don\'t wanna be buying a car and have it pop straight away.
cheers :D
The more boost, the less time it lasts really, I mean my car is on about 80k miles, still got basically 7s all round :) \'high milers\' sometimes means \'recent rebuild\' lol alternativly you could get 1 with a blown engine, buy a running enging out another car and drop that in, then you can sell the blown engine to someone on here to rebuild themselves, I know some people who have an engine in the car and an engine in the garage ready to go in lol Just depends on service history really, My FC is running at 210bhp with a few mods, so its gained 10bhp in 18 years :)
hmm, but do they go pop, under stock boost? or do they wear away.
i don\'t think we can really afford a car and a rebuild right away, and we wanna get drifting soon!!!!
wow.. ur on 7\'s!!
mine aparently around 50k miles and this time last yr compression were ave 6.5 fronts and 6.2 rears!! =/
im sure engines can go pop on stock boost as they will pop when parts are worn.
touch wood i wont find out anytime soon to ans ur question.
i think better to get a cheapo egi for drifting, so if u stack it or anything then bin it.. or once ur gd drifting then sell n get a TII.
u can prob get 2 egi\'s for price of a TII.
good luck with it neways. where u planning to go drifting?
well the plan was to use a TII as when we want more power we can get it, and my mate doesn\'t want to be chopping and changing cars. Seeing as egi\'s are fairly limited power wise we decided TII. Also it would have been better to go bimmer than egi, more torque and the engines run for longer.
Also i wanted an FC as some sort of car anyway, was thinking about importing one after summer as a weekend/track beast, but i\'ll be able to pick up and fd now, just gunna have to save for a bit longer
oh and we plan to be drifting at santa pod un-till we get good enough to take it to a track like lydd etc
as long as you keep an eye on the ancillaries - oil metering pump, water pump, spark plug leads.
And do regular oil changes, coolant flush once a year, and plugs about the same or more frequent - it could last you well.
Just let it warm up and cool down as it gives the seals it the engine time to settle and expand/contract as they will.
I\'ve had a couple of engine failures - mostly were down to some other item on the engine failing, and then when on boost they will let go - in an 18 year old car parts are getting tired.
Oh - and change and/or rewire the fuel pump !
As Prof says - it\'s more common for ancillary failure to be the cause of death on the 13BT\'s - one of my old cars had a dead engine at 87k due to the previous owner running it with a knackered water pump. I\'ve seen TII\'s with around 100k on the clock, but at that point everything is going to be getting a little tired!

awesome advice there thanks a lot. Obviously im not expecting miracles but a few drift days sounds pretty feasable.
thanks a lot guys :D
How much are you looking to spend on a TII?

make sure you drift on the right bit. They hate it when you drift on the long skinny track!!:mmmm
isn\'t that the run up for a super 100mph drift?
Only if it goes reeaaally reeaallly badly wrong!!
then what else is that long strip of road for?
:wiggle
having been in mine three times when it\'s thrown a tip (twice due to stupid boost levels - but once was under stock boost) I can say they do just go and it is a sudden loss of power - if it is an apex seal failure, thing is that even in an FD apex seal fails are rare running stock boost and ancillaries. As everyone else has said, it is more likely that it will be ancillary failure which causes the problems. Realistically I would say you can expect 100k miles (maybe more) from a TII without any issues if it is properly looked after,
I thought that black strip was for racing snails?!
if you want drift power without engine pop worries you can order a engine from rx7store.net they will ask for a wire transfer for a engine but they can build a moderate cheap engine from a used core wich stands up for 450 bhp, it will arrive you home, comparing to a new engine in Portugal it\'s about half the price, double the bhp.
nice idea, but if it goes pop, we will be rebuilding it ourselves. We arn\'t looking for big power just yet anyhu, though when the engine does go pop we will take it to a tuner in pieces so they can port it for us. That way when we want the big power, we should be able to upgrade it fairly easily :D
that\'s what i\'m saying, you don\'t need more than 400 to do nice drifting and the engine will do more if you need, it says it will hold 450 so you can push it to the 500 on a everyday driving, with less bhp than the announced i don\'t believe it will pop that easy.
well there are people around that drift cars with sub 200bhp. Thats what this car will start as so we ca learn the skills without the power. Power will only increase when we need it it to, to progress with the drifting.
oh it wont be an everyday car either :D
thanks for the advice anyhu :D
