Title: Oh No...
Post by: Retro_Boy_G on January 07, 2009, 11:22:47 AM
Was taking my car up today to get a new paint job and some parts added and to my shock it wont bloody start!! It has never done this to me.. I put the little immobiliser chip in which then starts beeping then turn the ignition and then it just goes off its tits making a ticking noise!!

Can anyone help me?? James is popping over at some point to have a look but id really love to get it sorted asap so i can still make it to the spray!! :(

Check the earth lead on the battery, then make sure its properly charged ;)

Mad ticking sound familiar - could be what happened to Grinders car - water in the ECU :(

Try the battery first - it\'s the most likely fix, and if that doesn\'t do it - lift the carpet in the passenger footwell and undo the metal kick plate - check the ECU isn\'t sitting in it\'s own water bath !

Could be the ECU - but it\'s unlikey a coupe would fill up with water there? (And if it has a wet ECU is only going to be the start of a painful experience!)

Is the starter engaging at all?

Thanks guys! Alot of people seem to think its the batter.. and i hope it is just that..

Would it have to have came into contact with water (like Rain) or something to be flooded? As it hasn\'t been out in the rain.. and its been in my garage every night (unless its bein driven in the dry weather).

Basically, i turn the key and something starts ticking.. you don\'t feel any power at all coming from the engine..

Are you certain the immobiliser is not playing silly buggers?
Title: Oh No...
Post by: Brett on January 07, 2009, 11:34:10 AM
Have you tried disconnecting the battery and then reconnecting etc?
Title: Oh No...
Post by: Retro_Boy_G on January 07, 2009, 11:39:26 AM
I\'ve not touched the battery.. better wait until James arrives or i will kill myself. The immobiliser is fine as i tried turning it without inserting it and it doesnt even tick, then when i do it starts ticking..
Title: Oh No...
Post by: Prof on January 07, 2009, 11:45:35 AM
the ticking sounds are coming from one or more of the solenoids - so that may not be anything to worry about as such.

However, as Brett said, you\'d expect to hear the Starter engage and crank the engine - if it\'s not doing that, either a problem exists in the circuitry to the starter motor and it isn\'t turning, or the starter is turning - but not turning the engine - which would imply stripped teeth on the starter / flywheel.

It\'s more likely to be a lack of current to turn the motor (poor or dead battery - try measuring the voltage with a meter - should be close to 12v on it - much lower than 11 and it won\'t be enough to reliably start).

Check wiring from battery to earth, and from battery to starter (underneath gearbox on the passenger side), as a corroded wire could stop it working.

probably the battery , the cold weather kills a lot of old batteries

Just a get a second hand one - must be plenty around for not much ££ :)

Glad it was something simple.

the alt is the top most pulley attached to a big roundish thing.
there should be 2nd hand ones around fairly cheap on here.
quick 15min job to change =)
and thats for a non mechanic person.

Alternators can be removed and repaired at the side of the road, in the pouring rain, on the way to RotorStock if needs be - takes 20mins in those conditions :Giggle

how do you repair alternators..?
my uncles repairs them n he needs air gun to undo bolts (unless he just being lazy) then brushing it with a wire brush n replacing some o rings... is that it..?
and what would cause an alt to not charge..?
(sorry, think im jacking the thread a bit)

That is good news! I appreciate that guys.. Could you keep your eye open for me then if you spot any?

Out of interest.. can you tell me if all FC3s models will fit my car? As i\'m sure Jit would sell his.

I\'m 65% certain they are different from EGi to TII.

You need the airgun to spin the pulley nut off - the other ones that hold the alternator on will come off easy enough by hand tools.

What they repair is the internal electrics and sometimes they need rewinding, as the corrosive elements in the engine bay take their toll over a few years.  To be honest - you\'ll probably get a good used replacement or even a new one cheaper than a rewind/repair.  I\'m sure a TII one will fit - but not sure about pulley alignment - that\'s going to be where the problem is.

Got a feeling the plug is different from EGi - TII....

Not got any at my desk today, so can\'t be sure! :Giggle

Well todays plans went a bit pear shaped so she is back in the garage again.. If she starts up again in a few days with no problems then i can only assume it is fine and it just died with the coldness.. I\'ll keep you all updated.

I\'m away to cry.. :(

Take the battery out and put it on charge. :yes

If you don\'t I\'ll have to send the FC police around :spank

Have you got a voltmeter? Check the batteries voltage, you need to see 12.4v plus really, any less and its < 75% charged, and if you get it running check the voltage at the battery again and it should read 14v+ which would means a good alternator, much less then 14v and it could point to a cream crackered alternator.

Unfortunately i don\'t have a charger for it.. Can\'t really afford to fork out on one just now either. :(

I\'d still take it out of the car and keep it in the warm :)

I have seen different plugs to the back of the alternator and also different size eye end for the main power out cable but this will be evident in the size of the nut holding it on.
Think this may well be due to EGI/TII as all mine I have broken have been all 89+ TII cars and all UK variants. But.............. I did have an EGI engine and not sure if it came of that.  A picture of your plug will determine this.
