Title: my new FD , GUTTED
Post by: funkybiznes on January 04, 2009, 02:37:18 PM
Hey guys,

I was due to pick up my new FD tomorrow, swapped for my 2002 ducati 748 and as usual things have gone wrong. All has been well over xmas struck a deal with the seller and had everything sorted. He got it MOT`d , taxed and put 4 new tyres on her. Top bloke.

Then the usual happened.....

0830- phone call to say the car had developed a problem.(would get back to me)
0945- Phones to explain- Car runs perfect on startup and tickover. all guages fine no smoke oil pressure good. He then goes for a spin to check all is running sweet and loses power after 4k revs!!!!!

coughing and spluttering......

He is looking into getting to the bottom of the problem, however i want your honest opinion, does this sound like its thrown a tip or do you think this is more of easy fix,( popped pipe etc. I have been told the ECU can go abit hey wire on a standard car in the cold, but this is running a knight 4 beat ECU, Hks pulse monitor etc.

Guys i need your help on this as i really cant be arsed to go through the process of trying to sell my bike again( timewasters) and im sure my seller is in the same boat aswe both were chuffed with our deal.

Really want my FD to be ok,

HELP

BREN

It might have just gone onto default.
The ecu does this when it feels it needs to protect the engine,it is a limp home mode that enables the car to run and start to get you home or to a tuning shop but not make real power.

Carl

is it still running on twins? chances are if it still on twins its a problem with the turbos loosing boost thats why power goes over 4k, alot of standard twins suffer boost issues due to the complicated system, could be a split pipe or solenoid problem

if the guy says the car starts fine, tickover is fine and no smoke or anything the only problem is power loss over a certain rpm then i dont think its very likely to be a thrown tip or cracked tip or anything like that

ASk him to get it looked at by one of the tuning companies to give you piece of mind, I wouldn\'t buy it without the all clear from someone in the know.

Better to be safe than sorry mate.

doesnt the secondary turbo along with injectors start to work at 4k??

i would also get it checked over by a rotary specialist before doing any deal TBH.

hope all goes well.

thats right Karl, the 2nd tubby starts to spool at 4k, sounds like a rats nest or solenoid prob. have a look here fella: clicky (http://www.autosportracetech.com/RX-7/symptoms.htm)
Might help with dignostics if you can send it to the seller

cheers again guys, ive just spoke to the seller, he had a mechanic look at it but didnt know rotary systems and then got told by another garage not to touch rotary, go figure.

Hes checking the rats nest again. H has explained the symptoms alot better this time too. Drives fine though cant create any boost. when he hits the gas too hard the power dives off, especially when he hits hills.( worst thing is she is gleaming for her year. not a mark and interior is perfect.) random... to me ive had plenty of turbos. its just annoying that im not there, as i could probably fault find , but i imagine looking at the rats nest is quite daunting for a novice mechanic....

pROBLEM IM FACING IS THAT THE SELLER IS BASED IN SWANSEA AND DOESNT KNOW ANY ONE OR WHERE THERE IS A DECENT GARAGE THAT CAN DEAL WITH ROTARY ENGINES DOWN THERE. im quite lucky as im in reading, but this doesnt help in this situation..when i do get her ill book her staright into rotecknics or hayward for a full diagnostic.

cheera again though guys. couldnt ask for better advice.

I\'m not great with the west of the UK but isnt Dragon Performance not too much of a trek from Swansea?

And look on the bright side mate - you may have actually of been quite lucky, a lot of new owners get a problem after the deal is done and get stuck with having to deal with it.  Fingers crossed though, hope its something simple and it gets sorted asap for you

From what you have said I have to presume this car has a boost gauge and it\'s seeing boost on one turbo and none on the second,

If so and the engine is nice and smooth even though it\'s not boosting on the second a few things spring to mind that are simple fixes,

First tell the guy to look at the black plastic box, middle top of the engine in front of the strut bar and he will see two small  pipes on the side and if one of these is off then no second turbo,

Second is if the car is not seeing 7 or 8 psi on the first turbo the car will not go onto the second turbo and will just rev out like a normaly assperated engine,

If this is the case look for a split pipe particualy if it has a stock intercooler take off and look at the lower intercooler pipe

Next up is to check that the rods are still connected from the actuators to the turbo as the rods are only held on by tiny circlips that actualy can rot away letting the rod fall of and then you have no boost.

All of the above can be checked by any goodish DIY guy,

If not any of the above, yes then think about a specialist but try the above first

Hope this helps

Or try another RX-7?

Not being funny, but since the guy clearly knows nothing about rotaries and doesn\'t know of a garage nearby that knows anything about rotaries, why would you be so desparate to buy his particular example? It would certainly be ringing alarm bells for me over the quality of maintainance that the car\'s received. Prices are rock bottom on these cars at the moment, why buy one you know has problems when there are plenty of quality examples out there going begging?

Just my 2p\'s worth, and I know it won\'t help diagnose the problem, but just a word of caution to not get sucked into the "oooh, that\'s a nice shiny car" mindset and become unable to see the reality of it

Had a very similar experience when buying mine with the same symtoms. Checked most of the things suggested above with no luck. The seller then took it to lindop and it turned out to be a knightsports FCD which had gone wrong, something I doubt I would have daignosed easily. Anyway to have it diagnosed and fixed, a quick check all round and a new fuel filter came in pretty cheap compared to the cost of the car. If your seller is as keen as he sounds he should be willing to get it sorted in my opinion.

Once again guys, sound advice, "WOW" thanks for the offer of an inspection ive sent you details direct to your email. Will owe you a few beers.

Funny eneough, the car does have a knight sports ECU fitted also... Hmmmm. Could be onto something there. But hey we will only see in the near future the outcome.

As for the seller , i feel for him also as he has ran round like a blue ass fly trying to get the lady sorted. i do fee like were getting somwhere now though..

Hi everyone,

Think i better introduce myself as it is currently my car you are talking about!

I have used this site for years and whilst i registered back in around 03 ish under a different user name (had to re register as not a clue what it was though, but must be similar to this) i have always stupidly put off posting and just searched the forums for any answers i needed.

Before buying the car i spent many many hours checking out this site. on some recomendations from this site and from liking what i saw i decided that i was gonna get my new baby from Newera imports. Miguel was the man in the know back then and sorced me this beaut of a car! that was back in 2003/04.

Obviousely using Newera i paid through the nose but i was not dissapointed and i new the car would be spot on. The car had 42k on the clock and was in amazing condition. i have since done only 10k in her and bar an initial problem with a siezed butterfly actuater in the second turbo (quickly sorted by newera and WGT motors) they have been completely faultless and bloody amazing.

Until now!!!

I have checked most of the things above but to no avail. WOW came around on the weekend and i must say a big thank you to him!:god stand up guy! thanks for the help and the spin in your FD :Giggle. WOW spotted straight away that the car was in limp mode

One question i do have. The Heat light has come on on the dash and looking under the car the wire that would normally go into the cat has no end on it. after lookin on the forum I believe there should be a sensor on the end??? Could this be the reason the car is going onto \'Limp mode\'

Thanks, any help would be great for both me and Bren.

Terry.
