Could one of your brake pads be down to the backing?  That would do it...

Bent brake dust shield?
Low brake pads? (some pads have a couple of metal tabs that are designed to rub on the disc when they get low.
Loose heatshield rubbing the prop?
Something catching a driveshaft?

im going to get it on the ramps and have a look tomorrow, i think my pads have 30% left so it could be that it does sound like something on the discs, i was thinking the shields.

Mines got a grinding/rubbing noise which is all the time except when I engage the clutch. Its 1 of the bearings inside of the gearbox. Not very expensive if you know how to rebuild a gearbox. Might be some help. Hope you get it sorted.

^^^ Input shaft bearing - Mine does that, my S14a did it for 24k miles as well.
As you say, cheap part, but it\'s labour that\'s the killer.

Is there a lip on your brake disc? This can sometimes be the cause but just touching your pad. At least then it\'s a free & easy fix.
