Title: Off the road!!!!
Post by: jonny116 on December 29, 2008, 09:32:19 AM
Just following on from my last thread about the alternator.

Had the alternator changed but 4 days later come christmas day i had a dead battery and even after a full charge the car wont start so has been sitting there since!!

When I turn the ignition everything just clicks eratically, dosent even turn over now.

Got no idea whats going on, any clues are appreciated??

My first thought was starter motor, but then i couldent understand why i\'d have a dead battery still with a new alternator on.

Cheers

Jonny

Can you hear the starter engage?
Have you checked that none of the earths have been disturbed?
Is the battery holding a charge? (If it was dead flat then it may be beyond recovery)

is this the black one?? im sure jurgen has it advertised for sale??

any way, if you take the battery of and take it to a garage and they will be able to test it.

all the clicking noises means the battery is flat.

was the battery ok/didnt go flat before the alternator change??

it could be a knackerd battery mate, if your battery was completly flat with no charge in it chanes are that youve probably killed the battery and it wont hold its charge, best be get a new battery or see if you can borrow one and fit it to yours and whilst its running have the alternator and battery tested to see if its charging the battery and also to see if its holding its charge

OHHHH!!! i had a similar problem, i got a trust battery on my fd and it was fine then it started to become a pain to start would just randomly click like mad when you turned the key!!

turns out the battery terminals are too small for the clamps!! got round this by cleaning the terminals up and wrapping some tin foil around them, reconnected and it worked straight away, but after time it comes back!!! im thinking im gonna get some new clamps and put them on it! try it out i was at the end of my tether then it worked lol!!

Thanks for the advice!!

Isent really any crap i\'m having with it, just an annoying electrical issue really!!  Im sure electrics do their own thing half the time anyway :)

l took the advice and went and got the battery tested properly, garage said it looks to be charging properly but just isent holding the charge, not even overnight, therefore duff battery.

Fitted a new one yesterday for £67 which is fair enough as Halfrauds was £83!!

I\'ve already got the smaller clamps on it so they were fine but the lad did say to watch out for anything that is staying on when the car is switched off that could be draining it, if it does it again auto electritian will have to look but otherwise battery and alternator are working fine now!

Cheers for the help!!
