Title: Relocation of the air pump?
Post by: m1tch on December 17, 2008, 10:14:40 PM
Hey guys, just thought I would ask a question regarding the air pump, with my new turbo, the air pump might (probably will) get in the way of the manifold. My question is regarding the possibility of relocating the air pump further down, but keep it connected with pipes.

The pump could then be run using an electric motor so that the MOT is ok :) I know that you can get an electric smog pump for emissions, what other options regarding emissions?

You could junk the air pump and run an air bypass into the UIM for MOT\'s.  Failing that, I\'d imagine a properly mapped ECU would get the car through an MOT once your new snail is fitted? :wave

If you\'re going to keep \'an\' air pump, why not fit a corvette smog pump - check out the 1300cc.com site - there is a write up on there for how to do it, but to be honest, if you\'re fitting the big turbo you\'ll need a standalone ECU or piggyback to control fuelling etc, so should be able to map the car to pass MOT emissions.  With no cat, the airpump isn\'t doing anything else other than adding weight.

Ok :) I will keep looking around :) im just worried that junking the air pump means that I would have a harder time getting past an MOT

im sure theres other people who will let the emissions slide.. i know a chap in oxford who quite lenient on that.. yet to take my fc for mot but have built gd rapport with him =)

There are things you can do to help you through emissions :

It\'s a sad fact of life that rotaries run very rich when the start up - you won\'t ever cure that, but when warm there is a bit of fuel that could be cut and still give a stable idle.  It should bring AFR\'s high enough to get through emissions, and provided one of the tests is a pass at idle, they are allowed to rev the car to 2000 to see if the other test will drop in.
