Title: Corner seals/plugs question....
Post by: Jim_rx7 on December 17, 2008, 07:54:58 PM
How do you know if these are re-useable or not during a rebuild??

They\'re cheap enough to replace, but wanna know if there\'s a certain point when for whatever reason they are un-useable.

cheers

I would just change everything on a rebuild, the engine is apart so you might as well as they are cheap lol

I\'m thinking along the same lines - you can reuse housings and rotors if they don\'t look damaged, but I\'d personally replace all the seals / oil rings - it\'s not worth risking it for the cost of the parts - compared to the hassle of stripping it down and rebuilding it again.

New ones will be a nice snug fit, so if yours are loose they are worn, new is best.

It was rebuilt 3K ago.

Not point in replacing stuff for fun.

Ie... if all apex seals are good, why not re-use? Side seals... again the same.

The engine\'s getting rebuilt due to water seal failure.

I have a 2nd set of end plates and middle plate, so replacing the damaged one is ok. Housings/rotors are ok too.

Just doesn\'t make sense spending £££ for fun if parts are good and can be re-used.

They are all a decent snug fit... so should be ok?

check the height and measure it up against minimum height..if theyre ok then you shud be fine to re use

chears...

If the height was out, that could simply mean the springs had seen better days no?

corner seals will not wear out on 3000 miles,if the motor ran hot replace the corner seal springs and all other combustion springs.if not then all seals will be reusable to save you some penny\'s.combustion springs are cheap,so if its within the budget you can replace them if you so wish.

true..corner seals will not wear on 3000 miles...and also true about the springs..
but how do we know they werent reused at the last rebuild

i mean the free height of the corner seal...has nothing to do with the spring

so I should replace the corner seal springs at least then... seeing as they are cheap as chips.

you measure the corner seal first,if within tolerences you put aside for reuse.then after cleaning rotor and parts, you repack seal and spring and check for deck height,,o5mm min,if okay reuse them.plate spring rarely go flat from new unless run hot,if a single turbo high boost rebuild replace them as matter of fact.like i said,if within budget replace them.

I would change the plugs for the corner seals too.
