Title: Restrictive air filter question
Post by: m1tch on December 14, 2008, 10:20:02 PM
Hey guys, just need to ask a few questions regarding air filters, the air filter I have on at the mo can only flow to about 220bhp, I was just wondering what air filters higher power cars are running so that the air filter I get for the new turbo isn\'t restricted.

I found this cool review using a supra regarding filter performances, Im def. not gonna go for a HKS mushroom as I know they dry out if you aren\'t careful, and then get sucked into the turbo lol

review:

http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/2/

It looks like I might go for that apexi, but I have seen 1 and they aren\'t that big lol on deamon-tweeks in their filter section it shows what size a certain filter is rated to, but I thought I would ask around to see what high power rotarys run on.

And no, this isn\'t an option for a road car :Giggle:

their more popular than apexi ones..
prob not much help but... =)

think there was a test on some skyline forum regarding filters for flow and the apexi came out on top for that also...

Unless you are going above 300bhp, then stick with a K&N filter inside the stock airbox :yes

This is the best - I spent lots of money trying out variations on this theme, the stock airbox and ducting is pretty good  - once you start going with bigger turbos or remove the AFM then start looking at the cones. (If you do use a cone it will need to be properly ducted)

brett: whats the best way to duct a cone?

Trial and error :)  In an ideal world you want a direct feed from a cold source.  You could start by using the stock ducting, then creating your own ducting from the end of this.  It should be possible to route cold air up from under the rad as well - you need to see what hosing you can make fit etc :wave

My old Apiro kit had a cone with a bell around it so that I could get a ram air effect meaning instant throttle response, its the same like the K and N Apollo sort.

Im going for over 400bhp, so im gonna need something with high flow capibilities soon :( I do like the SS mesh filters, make a nice loud roar and are easy to clean :D

What are the big BHP RXs running?

Yeah lol this is gonna be my weekend car, my car apparenty can\'t run a 14.8 down the strip stock like it does lol so I must be doing something right lol, Im gonna go for 400bhp :) see how it goes from there lol :D im planning to be mapped to about 1.2 bar :) Plus I will be running fully interior and a few changes externally ie the new spoiler lol Gonna be funny watching those skylines get scared by a car from the early 90s :D

Can\'t see the point of the steel mesh filters - do you want clean air or not?  Mesh filters are basically crap at filtering the air.

Think I\'ve made myself clear lol! :Giggle

400 - should be brisk :D

Yeah :) I mean the gearbox and the oil cooler is rated to 500bhp lol im going to be running 1000cc injectors, just need to check out about the diesel volvo truck turbo I have to see how long it will last lol I wanna see how fast I can get it down the strip, its called Kamikaze due to the lack of airbags and high power :D I have a classic mini for the daily drive now :)

u sure u can get 400 with stock ports and 1000cc injectors?
i used teh bhp calc thing prof gave me n 1000cc will giv about 330bhp or so.
unless it doesnt take into account the turbo etc..?
what gearbox n oil cooler u got..?

Stock gearbox and stock oil cooler :)

Prof has 800cc injectors and his is running mid 300bhp lol and thats with just a larger front end on the turbo :)

The injector calculator assumes:

With a chipped ECU it will take the injector duty for both primary and secondary to about 90% - the stock ECU takes the primaries to 80% and then when the secondaries kick in under boost, the primaries fall back to 40% and stay there (unless it\'s cold ;))

If you increase the fuel pressure, it increases the effective size of the injector - the formula :

Effective flow rate = Normal rate x square root (New fuel pressure / stock fuel pressure).

So raising the fuel pressure to 40 psi will increase the effective injector size to 588 from 550.  Large changes in fuel pressure aren\'t recommended - as the injectors need to be able to continue working at higher boost levels - don\'t forget that increased boost means increased fuel pressure at boost as well, starting higher will mean finishing higher.

If you change the fuel pressure - you need some way of mapping the changes - I\'ve had to cut fuel in most of the vacuum part of my map as a result of the increase in fuel pressure - but it gives back a little at the top end ;)
