Still having a issue with water loss with my rx...
It is using all the water in the expansion tank in a week... worse when hammering it a bit...
done the water seal "fill to top and crank with the top filler cap off" test and no water came out, the oil is clear as usual, their is no mayo under the oil cap (tho it doesnt have a head gasket so would that still apply...), starts fine (except the occasinal flooding)...
carpets arnt wet and the inside doesnt mist up when no one is in the car... heaters are also RED hot
no puddles uinder the car either so i am at a loss as to were its going... engine was rebuilt about 8-9k ago by hurley engineering... as far as i know it hasnt got a thermostat as the temp gauge never goes any higher than 1cm but all the hoses ect get warm...
also sometimes wont lose any then it will lose loads in 1 go...
anyone any ideas were the water is going? or do i just have a gremlin some were with a straw and a taste for coolent...
also i get a clunking (like a tinny clatter clatter clatter) faintly when i come off the throttle some times any ideas?
Do you have any warrenty?
For you not to have signs of water leaks externally may mean you are losing it internally but you need to explore all the avenues first. Is this a FC or FD?
Firstly there are a number of possibilities but personally if you get a compression check done then this will show up a water seal failure. For now if you get a bottle of \'K seal\' then this should stop the loss but may only be a quick fix. Clive sells this. I would get the stuff that you can mix with antifreeze as its an easier job and less costly as you just throw it in. The other variety does not mix at all with antifreeze and will globulate so you have to use it with plain water which is no good in this weather.
not really got any warrenty, i was supposed to take it back every 1500 miles for a service (first one after the re-build & run-in was done) but i refuse to drive from north wales to coventry and pay £200 on top for a service... i have done oil changes ect myself every 1500 miles myself tho.
its a 1986 FC EGI
wouldnt the water seals be shown up with lots of smoke, bad running, problems starting ect? she is running sweet as a nut just every now and again she loses coolent...
also did the test stated here for water seals and no coolent at all came out: http://www.mazdaforum.com/m_13028/tm.htm
"I think my engine has been overheated. How can I check to see if the coolant seals are good?
Fill coolant system ALL THE WAY UP (engine cold). Make sure that the fluid level is as high as you can get it. Leave the filler cap off. Remove the EGI fuse. Crank the motor (it should not start). If you get a LARGE amount of coolant coming out of the coolant fill, its safe to assume your coolant seals are blown. Also, a good indication is a fuel/exhaust smell in the coolant."
if the worse came to the worst what would i have to do to change the seals? would it be a case of replacing all the seals tips ect again or just the water seals?
after loosing water in my fc recently also.. my water was tricking out of the weep hole of the water pump. didnt show any bug puddles.. jus a drip of water under the car.
if it treakes out of the weep hole then it can get caught on the under tray on an fc so u dont see the puddle. worth wiping dry then after a drive when it gets hot then check if its wet or not.
well if it was a water seal failure if your lucky you\'ll just need to replace the seals.
and i think (this could be wrong) water can leak into the the engine and destroy apex seals etc if left. dont quote me on that.
were is the weep hole? any pics?
rack / subframe had some water on the other week but we couldnt say for sure if it was down to a leak because their was a puddle near the unit that i didnt know for the life of me if i had gone through or not...
k seal seems to be £10 direct from the manufacturer so might invest in some... already spent about £100 on little bits this week lol
hello ste00
give me a call on 02476 661357 you dont need a service every 1500 miles the guy who sold you the car has given you the wrong info.good advise from the guys.
regards Mick Hurley
weep hole is behind the water pump pulley. really need a torch to have a look.
tbh from my experience, dont bother buying just the seal as when you take the propeller off to replace the seal sth breaks due to age n corrosion.
tim at rxmotors selling for 25ukp for a 2nd hand one =)

really? that was worrying me as i have (photocopys for some reason...) of the invoices (5469) for your referance and its stamped saying "engine gauaranteed for 2 years or 24k miles, please note: engines must be serviced at hurley engineering at 1500 miles and every 6k miles" stamp seams to read 77528 miles and its just under 80k now,
think doug has given me a few duff bits of info on the car to be honest...
how much info do you have on the car? i have been meaning to phone for months but didnt want to sound a tit saying "well does the car infront of me have x" also what are the conditions ect of your warrente?
what do you think it could be? also could it be fixed in a day under warentee? as i am 146 miles away from you to be exact...
just left you a message on your awnserphone with my mobile number (cant dial out at work but i am allowed to accept calls lol)
guess i will hold off on the K seal for now :)
hello mate, ive just been rebuilbing my 91 fc as water was disapearing from my engine. the engine only has to overheat once and the water seals can go. To test mine i took the filler cap off with engine running and every so often bubbles came out. make sure the cap is off before you start the engine as boiling hot coolant bursting out at high pressure wont be fun!! i also looked for mayo but didnt see any. well not untill i took the whole filler neck off (only 2 screws) then when i looked right inside i found the mayo.
good luck
