Title: Smoke rising from brake fluid area
Post by: robedwards99 on December 14, 2008, 11:26:55 AM
Just taken the car out after it\'s been stood for a week or so and noticed smoke coming from the side of the bonnet when stopped in traffic. The car hadn\'t even really warmed up.

Drove straight back and popped the bonnet.

Smoke is rising from what looks to be the righthand side of the brake fluid resivoir, or from the big black round thing just behind it.

It doesn\'t look to be coming from anywhere lower than this area.

Any suggestions??

I dont know what spec your car is, but mine does the same - but its probably not brake fluid, on mine its a tiny bit of oil from my turbo\'s.  They\'re on their way out, I have replacement twins, but just not got round to doing it.

Smoke doesn\'t smell oily.

Car is standard.

the "big round black thing" behind the brake fluid reservoir is the servo housing, but dunno why it should be smoking! Like Swanny said, the obvious answer would be oil smoke making its way up from the turbos below? Not always easy to see what\'s going on down in the dark depths there!

Could it not just be some rain water just burning off

No I don\'t think so, it smelt quite acrid.

Oil from the turbo\'s or brake fluid leaking from the clutch master cylinder are possibilities. Grab a big torch and feel/ look around for obvious leaks.
