Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on December 13, 2008, 07:28:34 PM
thought i would start a new thread following on from my old one

see here

http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50759&page=4

well work started again today and im quite pleased with what i got done today.

the plan was to carry on with the wiring, what i nightmare :Hammer

didnt take to many pictures as i need to remember what was what as i get easily confused with electrics :o

sorted out all the starter motor and alternator wiring and tidied them into a bag all labeled up

then moved onto stripping and cutting the wires out that i dont need from the fuses and relay boxes and labeled them as well.

all these need to be fused in a separate box, still undecided on where to put it yet

and these ones need relays and will be hidden some where else

and the handy wiring diagram that i printed off the net :D

and this little lot that got ripped out :2eek

and my intercooler that i got earlier in the week :D

does any one know what the (TEL) and the one above that is for?? the one above has rubbed off and i carn\'t read it.

thats all for today folks :wave

Looks like you\'ve been a busy little bee fella. When do you think you\'ll be back on the road?
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on December 28, 2008, 04:47:31 PM
yeh mate, busy busy lol, not sure when to be back on the road but early 09 i hope.

little update.

havent done much this past week what with the festive season and plenty of beer :mmmm

got my wheels and a pair of R888\'s
think they will transform the look of the car from before.

also bought a polishing kit off ebay to give the bits i want doing a go but i dont have any patient\'s for things like this :Snoring

tried a little part of my intercooler and it came up quite good but not to the finish i would like so im going to have to think how im going to get all the bits done.

then moved onto sorting the rest of the bay and removing bits in preparation for spraying. took bloody ages and i still havent finished :2Rolleyes

i also took my wastegate apart to see what spring i was running and found that the diaphragm has a few marks but im not sure where i could get a replacement??

i have also been trying to find the right relay and fuse box i want to use but carnt find the one that will suit my needs

thats all for today.

Post by: Nik da Greek on December 31, 2008, 02:06:05 PM
Great work, Karl. For the polishing, you\'ll need to flat it back with wet and dry a bit before using the mops and compounds on it. Shouldn\'t need too much with that intercooler, just use ever-finer grades of paper till you get to about 1500 grit, and then it\'ll be ready for mopping. No short-cuts with polishing, I\'m afraid.

Loving those wheels, look well proper!
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on December 31, 2008, 02:11:04 PM

well from the last few days inbetween celebrations and eating i have been sat in my computer room trying to work out the wiring loom and what i need.

what a mess :2eek :Giggle

made a little spread sheet so i knew what was what so i dont forget and drew a few very brief layout of all the fuses and relays and how they are going to be wired. :xconfused

while flicking through the auto electricians catalogue.

glad to be back on the laptop now though.

i still need to find out what TEL is and the one above it on this cover??

all the things i need are now on order :mmmm

also recieved my battery box to be located in the boot.

once this wiring is done its just the bay to spray and it wont be much longer until it will be somewhere near finished...for now

no bother mate!
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on January 18, 2009, 10:05:47 PM
yeh thats the problem, you never know when to stop. had to tell my self a few times, i really dont need to do that lol

any way, a bit more done, the bits that i have ripped out and simplified should be complete soon.

here is the only box that will be on show in the bay, was originally going to hide it behind/under the passenger headlight but for practically, i dont really want to remove the headlight every time a fuse "may" blow. sooo its going to mounted somewhere around the area where you can see the inner arch.

and this is the little lot that will be connected to it.

here is the drivers side part of the loom that i have managed to sort out and re-tape partially.

the separate, covered wires are all the ones from that side that have been chopped out and capped off.

and this is the drivers side, indicator, side light, main and dipped beam loom and the passengers will be the same.

also got my greedy elbow during the week, the parts are still collecting. just need to get a clutched ordered and some others bits and im nearly there.

have also given my mate some bits that i want to be polished and they are looking good :D
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on January 20, 2009, 08:37:32 PM
well done a bit more tonight and have now finished the front wiring loom under the slam panel. all tidied away and no ugly fuse box :yes

and the UIM semi polished :D

also recieved my wheel spacer as well

thats all for now folks.......

Post by: Ada7 on January 20, 2009, 08:40:50 PM
Karl you should get the abrasive kit too so that your polishing will come up a lot better. Take a lot longer but it really worth it in the end.
I did all my engine stuff and it looks great now:D

cheers adam, looks good.

well i would like to back on the road end of march all MOT\'d,taxed and insured ready for run in. it would be sooner but i just dont get the time :(

well the plan is to get all the wiring sorted out so i know its finished but wont be mounting the fuse box up, thats pretty much the only thing that will get in the way when spraying the bay so its all good :D

i will be starting on the fuse box this week/weekend so i will let you know but its all pretty simple, i hope any way :2eek

i dont quite understand your post robbie

well got it all finally masked up ready for some paint

little bit of etch and then a good coat of primer

rubbed the primer down a bit and added a coat but the colour match isnt very good but i think i can live with it, we will see when i get another coat on when it has dried.

have only done upto the strut turrets so i can get the wiring finished plus i didnt order enough paint just incase it wasnt the right colour.

got the oil coolers bolted back in

unwraped all the wiring loom and started putting it back into place and put the bonnet catch back on. gave it a coat of silver too.

took the scuttle panel and associated bits off and gave it a good clean and rub down. lovely shade of red lol

thats all for today, hopefully get some time on it tomorrow as well, really need to start on wiring the fuse box in.

Well done Karl,
I\'ve been watching your progress with interest. I wanted to tidy up the wiring in the engine bay, but your skills are better than mine, (making your own fuse box etc).
Looking forward to seeing your car once its finished.

Karl,

Awesome work there! You have a lot of dedication! :god

As an aside, whilst you\'ve got the scuttle panel off, could you snap a close-up picture of the passanger side air inlet... I have an annoying wooshing noise at anything over 60mph... sounds like it would if a window is open a crack. I suspect that I may be missing some kind of panel/flap in the fresh air-intake.

Thanks, and once again, great work!

i did go through a stage where i didn\'t really do much but most of the time that was waiting on the engine, getting time to work on it and saving enough money for parts etc.
i could of just got a new engine and got straight back on the road without changing anything but it was winter and got carried away lol

it does feel good knowing they are my own personal touches and knowing that others can appreciate it :D

will get some pictures tomorrow for you, hopefully with an update but im going 4X4\'ing tomorrow so will have to see.

sorry i didnt get back to you dan, there is nothing in mine that is flap about or looks to be missing so im not sure, no picutres as it was a little to dark and its just a hole lol

a bit more progress, ran out of paint so until that comes i decided where i can route the battery cable

now that i arent running air con there is no need for the condenser so the first thing was to remove that, what i pain in the arse that is.

plastics and glove box removed.

the offending item lol

i now need to either block up the plastic box where the pipes went or source one from a car that didnt have a/c.

and battery cable through the grommet where the pipes for the condenser were

its all still to tidy and finish off though.

clutch is on order now as well :D

time to start on the electrics soon which i now am not looking forward too

yeh cheers mate, starting to come together now, slowly.

its now all masked up, got it finished off yesterday but no pics, batteries where flat

so ive got to

finish the spraying and i can get all the wiring done, have been making up diagrams on the computer so i know exactly what goes where as the fuse box is quite difficult to use.

then my clutch will be here next week and the engine can then go in :D :D

all depends how long my dad is going to take doing the wiring as he is the electrician lol :3Confused

yeh its starting to come together now, not done much for a while due to doing a lot of 4x4ing :D

didnt get in until gone 4 last night due to being stuck, phoned a mate to get us out which he did but then got stuck again. he tried to get us out but his SJ is a bit too light and he snapped an engine mount, phoned some one else and on the way he got stuck in the snow, SJ went to pull him out and ended up getting stuck him self lol.

long story short we ended up with 4 vehicles to get us out, great fun :D

ewww what a mess.

not sure what im going to do with it yet but plan on stripping it down this weekend if i can get a 54mm socket.

also my dads machine at work is fixed and he cleaned up my old, knackered housing and rotor to see what they would turn out like, omg, how clean :D

think i might put it on the mantel piece lol

i pulled all the masking off the other day as well, what a pain in the a$$, had a nice football afterwords though. this is how its looking now with it all uncovered and the finish is quite good but the pictures dont pick up on it very well.

lol just masking the engine bay back up while you put the engine back in! also why did you need that block off mark?? thought you already had good parts?

really good read tis project is.
coming along really nicely and to have done it yourself must take some of the pain off the old engine going so soon!
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on February 21, 2009, 09:59:03 AM
i bought the block just as spare parts but most of it could be scrap if its thrown some tips, hopefully getting a 54mm socket today so will find out later :D

i already have a freshly built block which is sitting next to it, think there is a few pictures further back.

cheers lee, its getting there now, i could of just put the new engine back in and be done with it and it could of been back on the road ages ago but it was winter and i get carried away lol

well no luck getting a 54mm socket but the trusty old chisel and hammer did the job :D

everything seems in good condition will all the apex seals in tact which was nice and it was the inner seals that had gone.
this was the easiest engine i have stripped down, carnt believe how simple it is, took me around 30 mins and it was all in bits :yes

cracked on with the wiring again today and its very nearly there. the fuse box is all finished and loom taped up with all the power feeds connected up.

the battery lead is only in place and not clipped in yet, ready for the alternator and starter to be connected to it.

also took most of the bits off the water pump and filler neck and taped up the rest ready for glass shot blasting :D

i have found that the paint in the bay is very easy to chip off though :(

man what an awesome thread!! looking spot on mate, can see why its much easier to paint the bay with the engine out :god lol

love what ya done with the fuse box, was thinking of just moving all mine to the pass corner coz av got shut of abs but never thought of putting in a different box! good thinkin old chap lol, so is it a wiring amateur job do you think or could do with a bit of nonse? where did you get the wiring and box from? and lastly any tips and tricks to do it?

cheers dude keep the project comin!!!!:)
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on March 04, 2009, 11:16:24 PM
yeh loom should look pretty neat :D

i tried taking the housing off but it wont budge for some reason, plus it will be getting checked over soon anyway.

lol yeh a hell of a lot easier, i wouldnt like to do it with the engine and everything in

the other reason i put it in a different box was because the battery is going in the boot and i have removed alot of fuses, relays and wiring to simplify it all down.

i had all the wiring diagrams to work out, what i could removed and what needed to be left etc etc and took a great deal of time to figure it out, i hate electrics lol

got all the stuff i needed from here (http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/home/homepage.php)

back at it again today.

my main aim was to get the engine ancillaries back on and built up.

i got my dad to put the LIM and water filler neck/pump through his glass shot washer and they came out great until i put them through the dishwasher to throughly clean them out. the washing tablet has made them go a bit dull but still look great.

i also made up the gaskets for the water pump and filler neck

its all nearly complete now with just a few more bits to go on here and there.

all packed back up for the day, had enough now.

Doesn\'t look too bad. What size turbo are you looking at running ?? What porting have you done to the engine ?

Isn\'t the thread on the right the water temp sensor ?

Shaun
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: antnicuk on March 09, 2009, 08:09:23 PM
if the thread is next to the oil filler on the centre plate, its an oil breather but you may find that its actually blocked.  Have you looked in it or poke a bit of wire down there.

What turbo are you running? GT35??   it looks like a T3 flange.  The fanimold looks good,  certainly no point making anything bigger if you are keeping the turbo with a T3 flange.  doesnt matter how big the runners are if you run the smaller flange.

Good work btw, when you going to have it running?
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on March 09, 2009, 10:42:19 PM
cheers guys :D

its running a TD06 with some heavy porting, there is some pictures either further back in this thread or the other one. the water temp sensor is above the oil pressure sensor isnt it??

yeh its the thread near the oil filler, here is a better picture which ive just realised im just about pointing at it :rollin ive tried to have a look but carnt really see, i will be able to just put a bolt in there or would it be better to connect a breather system up?? where are the other outlets??

not sure when it will be running as i have to test the loom first  but fingers crossed get the engine in this week/weekend. after that i have to make the mounts for the rad and intercooler and sort the rad pipes etc etc

well here is the clutch and i thought i might as well go bolt it on while i had a bit of time.

Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: antnicuk on March 10, 2009, 12:26:10 AM
I assume your turbo hot side inlet is a T3 and not T4 with a conversion plate?

Is the threaded hole blocked? also, do you have a hole on the other side of the filler over the rear rotor housing?

you will need your breather system or you will be blowing your dipstick out along with lots of oil. You must let the pressure and oil vapour out of the sump and catch the oil in something.  There is another outlet on the filler tube and on some 13b\'s there is one poking out of the other side of the centre plate pointing towards the oil filter.
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on March 10, 2009, 01:33:53 PM
Yeh its a t3. Just bolts straight on.

Cheers for that. It doesnt seem to be blocked but it will have to have a closer look.

The one opposite it on the other side of the plate has a cap on it.

Thanks for your help :)

bit more done this weekend, starting to get somewhere now.

decided to have a look at how im going to mount the rad and intercooler and at what angle to put them at, made some templates out of cardboard to get a rough idea and will be making them up tomorrow hopefully.

then moved onto the rest of the dreaded wiring :rollin

chopped and added where i needed to and soldered and heat shrinked up. just a bit more to do in this area then it can all be loom taped up and tidied. also got the alternator and starter wires run though to the big fuse as well ready to be cut to length. all the black tape is temporary as well btw :p

the bucket of jap crap wiring is starting to get a little full now :rollin

and the assortment of bolts and brackets that i probably wont need

got the bottom mounts for the rad sorted so now i can get the bottom of the rad fixed in and then make the mounts for the top, need to do something with the fan cowling and oil cooler pipe as its catching.

back to it now :wiggle

what are these two wires guys, the last few i need, they can plug together but it doesnt make any sense why they would, both black with red block every few inches.

some more CAD to mount the top of the rad in

this is the top outlet chopped off and turned round to a better position for the hose

and this is the bottom outlet, again, chopped off. ive placed it like this so that i will get more ground clearance, the outlet is covered by the tape btw.

will hopefully be getting welded up thursday and have it back to mount and sort the hoses out.

also stripped back the wiring for the fans, dont know why i didnt do this in the first place before taping and mounting it all back in :2Rolleyes

then its onto mounting the intercooler in and sorting out the power steering cooler loop.

well ive spent hours trying to find out what the two plugs are that i mentioned above, lots of head scratching :(

decided, fduk it, and stripped it all back only to find this :Grrr  :2Confused

so what was it for??

havent really done much lately but i needed some oil cooler circlips and a big thanks to Martin H (noyzboy100db) for sending me some.

they are not cheap for what they are from mazda, something ridiculous, so i just did this. there is no way that they can pop out now.

Had the same wire, when i stripped the harness down,

It goes from the top of the coolant filler neck, to the alternator Wire Harness.

Hope this helps
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on April 07, 2009, 06:12:57 PM
thanks for that :D

it all makes sense now, because i have altered the loom so much the wire on top of the filler neck is long enough to reach.

well finally got the rad done.

havent really touched the car for a good few weeks now, should really be on the road now :(

rad all welded up with the new/repositioned outlets, but i have found that i may have to get the top one done again, my mistake as i didnt have the turbo to bolt on to measure up properly :2Rolleyes you will see why further down.

anyway, got the rad all mounted and plumbed in. the hoses i had in the garage from previous cars/projects. little bit of cutting and joining and they connect up lovely. i love free mods :D

got the turbo bolted back on after a bit more polishing, i dont have the patients go get it fully bling lol

ive now realised though that i wont be able to get any kind of air filter on there although i was just planning on using some flexi tubing routed toward the hole in the bumper.

but by doing this i wont be able to have a vaccum for the omp valves http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57190 (http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57190)

v mount is looking good karl,i always wondered how you run the lower rad hose with that setup. im thinking of putting a cold air feed or air filter of some sort behind the front bumper and duct it to the turbo but space is a issue and what do you do when it rains ?
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on May 05, 2009, 05:31:50 PM
yeh my garage is full of bit that i have kept over the years, just carnt throw things away lol

how you getting on with yours lee??

most of the v mounts that i have seen done by people have just flipped the rad upside down and then made up the pipes from there but i didnt like the idea of the hoses pointing towards the ground.

im still undecided about the filter/cold air feed but im sure i will figure it out

does anyone know what goes on the inside of this pipe to stop the movement. looks to be some kind of O ring seal of some kind. doesnt look to be must movement but there is quite a bit.

i hate loosing bits :Grrr :2Rolleyes

got a little package from japan today, the waste diaphragm that needed replacing. was only posted thursday :2eek

will get the wastegate back together tomorrow

have been scratching my head the last few weeks with the fitting on the trust 3 row intercooler and there was no way it was going to fit the way i wanted, the way the outlets were facing.

so chop chop :2eek

its going to sit here using the angle to mount it off and also i can plate that bit of the rad off to stop heat soak to the air filter

and plenty of angle between rad and intercooler.

fuel connected up and oil filter on

ignition all connected up. much more room now to change the plugs :yes  still got the finish off the loom side of the twin power.

and this to finished off, got a bit side tracked lol was going to hide all this originally but i thought for accessibility it doesnt look too bad.

also got my wheel spacers for the new wheels, fitted one on the front as i had 10 mins, had to cut around 7mm off the threads to give clearance for the wheels.

they are going to look quite well on the car i think :D

also saw this little bugger out of the corner of my eye at the weekend running down the drive lol caught it and put it in the cat cage we have. some one has been round today to collect it, it was a pet and gone nearly 1 mile from its home.

packed up and left it like this

Karl,
Like the work you\'ve been doing on the rebuild, lots of different ways of doing things. Well done.

I like the wheel spacers you\'ve had made, what thickness are they and what type of nut will you use to attach the spacer to the original hub ? I\'m looking for some spacers myself to bring the wheels out to line up with the Veilside arch extensions I\'ve just purchased.

I also agree with you about the fuse box you made, its a lot of work to hide.

Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on May 19, 2009, 05:25:59 PM
cheers chris, they were made by danny on here and fduk, i think he has some left as well. i got 15mm for the fronts and 25mm for the back, i wont need to cut the studs on the hub for the back. my wheels are et35 for reference. the nuts you see bolt the hub and then use your wheel nuts where the nuts in the picture are.

yeh getting there now bud, no didnt bite but at first when i picked it up it tried lol its some ones pets so was quite tame.

How come you decided to mount the ic that way Karl? Looking at it i you spin it 180 degress clockwise (or anticlockwise) then youd get shorter pipework and less lag. hard to tell from the pics but looks like it may have fitted.
But you\'re hard work is starting to pay off bud, it looking great in that engine bay now, so much simpler and less cluttered.

How bizarre! Random mustelids on the drive alert! at least, I think ferrets are mustelids, may be wrong there :3Confused A mate at work had all her chickens eaten by a mink that had escaped off a Russian tramp ship that put in to the harbour. Apparently quite a common problem, stowaway mink on Russian ships. Couldn\'t believe the death toll, it scoffed at least one chicken a day, greedy little sod!

The car\'s looking most excellent, Karl. It\'s great seeing how everythings\' coming together and making for a so much more tidy layout than standard with all your deletions and rewirings and stuff. Top bombing!

Post by: karl_tate on May 19, 2009, 06:57:26 PM
i tried it in all sorts of positions rob but there was no way it was going in, got very stressed out about it lol. with it that way i have enough room for an air filter and some kind of cold air ducting, well thats the plan :rollin

i know nik, i was like wtf, didnt have a clue what to do, just picked it up but couldnt find any where to put it so it didnt escape again. i ended up putting it under a washing basket until i found the cage lol

yeh its coming together nicely now, looks a bit different from when i first started stripping it down haha

Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: Bobbit on May 27, 2009, 07:04:01 PM
Congrats Karl glad it started with no probs. I can see how much of a head ache that I/C would have been, it only just fits as it is, you\'ve done well there bud.
I agree the water bottle is a little small, as MaLicE said get a UK spec rear washer bottle, they are massive. i\'ve got my rear washer you can have for now if you like, it\'s jap spec so not massive but it\'s just sitting in my garage taking up space. You could link it to your current bottle and use them both, as long as the hose feeding the water to the engine is at the rear of the two you should be fine (inertia will cause the water to flow to the rear of the bottles so the rear one should always have the most water in, at least that\'s how my brain thinks it should work).
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on May 27, 2009, 08:23:42 PM
cheers guys, makes all this work, worth while :D

i did think it was small but i dont have any experience with WI and im not sure how much it will use at full chat????

rob i do have a jap spec bottle, well at least i think i do because the cap is there to fill it up, good thinking using both, the one that is mounted in there has a low level sensor so i will know when it starts to get low which i why i was going to use it. but if its too small then i will have to come up with another solution.

anyway my order came today :D hoses for rad and to connect intercooler up, total bill £180

dropped the intercooler off this morning and its all finished, just needs a good polish and tidy up.

here is how it will be all bolted in. ive taken the intercooler off again to get it cleaned out as god knows what kinda crap is in there.

things still to do

need a bit of pipe for the power steering,
power steering belt (without aircon)
anti-freeze,
connect wastegate up,
wire the WI in,
wiring for headlights and horns,
mount battery and box,
sort ducting for intercooler and air filter,

and its just about there :rollin

what anti-freeze should i use??

ok thanks shaun.

well another bit done this weekend and a few more bits ticked off the to-do list :D

pushed it outside to enjoy the nice weather, first time it has turned a wheel in 7 or so months lol

made a bracket up for the ast and got that all plumbed in and filled it up with coolant. checked everything over again to make sure i hadnt forgotten anything and started it up again to let it get up to temperature and the fans then kicked in, thats another thing that works properly :yes

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v374/astragsi/th_MOV00059.jpg) (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v374/astragsi/?action=view¤t=MOV00059.flv)

then moved onto mounting the battery in. welded some threaded bar to the boot floor and it all fits nicely.

then got started on the wiring for the WI, got a power supply straight to the battery and run all the other wires down the side of the car, one into the engine bay to connect to the pressure switch and the other for the LED\'s which indicate then the pump is running  and other to tell when its low on water.

bridged the wires to test it and all works fine and dandy but its bloody loud   unsure of which nozzle to use though, shaun??

sounds great in the vid bud. I cant believe how much work you\'ve managed to do bud, i was fretting about mine when i had a slight judder on full boost and was stressing about not being able to fix it. But you\'ve stripped out the engine, rewired the harness, set up WI, sorted out a v-mount and taken the time and effort to write it all up. Keep up the great work fella and thanks for inspiring me to keep plugging on at mine (finally fix the thing too!) Cheers Karl

so what was the problem then??
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: Bobbit on June 02, 2009, 10:11:47 AM
Not to sure, i ended up tracing the entire rats nest over the weekend (3 pipes were in the wrong place), i had a loose earth and the coolant line to the uim was dripping coolant onto the TPS and HT leads. Sorted these out and the problems gone away. Embarresed a BMW 530 on the way into work this morning, made it all worth while.

finish of mounting the bumper properly, its a total bodge job
tidy wiring in interior and put panels back on.
sort the fittings for the light covers
need to work out why my windows wont work, bit confused about it really as i haven\'t touched any of the wiring for them???

finally give a good damn clean and polish and try and sort the nasty dent out :(

cheers lee,

i have missed driving this car, well been tootling about in my mums corsa for the past 7 months lol

fitted the new wheels with the spacers and im getting a bit of rubbage on the arch liner so have that to sort as well.

the clutch is bedding in nice as well nice, was a right mare at first.

ive also noticed that if i blip the throttle down shifting i get a bit more knock than under any other circumstances, could this be just down to the map??

also some times if i put my clutch in when slowing down to a junction the revs will drop to around 600rpm ish and then go straight back to normal idle??

just notices that the colour isnt very good in them pics, looks totally different, camera phone

Post by: BlitzBoy on June 10, 2009, 10:56:59 AM
You do get more noise when you lift off the throttle hence the high knock reading, dont worry about it happens on most FDs with big exhausts, the dropping down to 600rpm is partly the map and sometimes the idle control valve

Woo Hoo! The monster lives, the wheels look great now. Great news Karl, fancy doing mine now?
My revs drop sometimes when i dip the clutch, never bothered me bud.
But looking at the pic the car does look good, i recon you need some feed side skirts to finish the car off tho (btw this has nothing to do with the fact i\'ve got my feed sides fitted and I want a c-west bumper myself and am curious to see what they would look like together!)
Edit: have you not got a strut brace Karl?

Great news Karl and the car and engine build look amazing, really really chuffed for you. I bet it felt amazing driving her out again for the first time.

I take my hat off to you mate for taking the time and effort to give it a go it is something i really want to do myself as i honestly think i would enjoy doing most of it when the inevitable happens.

Also its great to have someone local with rebuild experience to bombard with questions lol.

all is well :D went to a local jap meet at the weekend and have now clocked up 524 miles.

was a big down pour halfway there and as it was so warm all day my window was right down, all i can say is i got a little wet lol need to sort the windows haha, just been loving the nice weather and driving it again :D

few pics from the day that people have took of my car. can see the nice dent on the left rear quarter from the speaker that fell of the shelf one night in the garage :(

can also now clearly see the engine bay is a different colour but there was noting i could do about that.

can really see how the colour also changes in the light but the camera\'s havent picked it up very well.

cheers tony, yeh my mum is proud of everything i do :rollin

yeh mapping soon, got the F1 this weekend, well going tomorrow actually :D

i actually hate electrics but just worked my way through it with the wiring diagrams, pretty simple once its all stripped down to what i needed. hadnt actually thought about running at RS but yeh maybe.

cheers kieron, it does make me smile knowing ive done it all. how is yours coming alone???

thanks ben, thing is i havent actually touched that fuse box at all, but there was no fuse in there for the windows before and they worked so a bit strange.

ok cheers rob.
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: Initial-D on June 18, 2009, 01:43:37 PM
I hadn\'t touched my F100 box either but something shorted and caused the box to die. If you can put 12v into one of the small plugs in the units top left plug (two wires) then the window works you know its the box. Otherwise I\'d have said the fuse.

cheers for that ben :)

feels good to be back on the road :D

going to get mark to map it for me, not sure when. how are you getting on??

was power at the fuse but before it never had a fuse and they worked :Hammer

so fuse box out and apart to see where it gets the main feed from and where the fuse for the windows comes out, from the feed out i used the flasher unit for the a/c as i think they are somehow linked and ran a wire to that, simpleesss...

we now have windows properly :rollin

well a little update is due i think.

arranged a mapping session the other week so did a plug and oil change and just basically checked everything over. i also had a tiny air lock in the cooling system so that was also sorted as well.

anyway got to WGT this morning nice and early, pip put one of his basic base maps that he has for my turbo and started again as it was all over the place. i dont really understand mapping quite yet :rollin :Hammer

all was going well until he started to do the first few runs, kept leaning out at the top but no matter how much more fuel he added it didnt make much difference and the boost controller isnt holding very well.

so got a new boost controller to buy, any recommendations??? and also change the fuel filter and im going to buy a new pump while in at it.

its never ending with this car :(

dyno graphs and a little vid of the initial mapping.

opinions of the graphs as i dont really know to how to analyze them properly either :o

anyway, as pip recommended i bought a new boost controller from charlieP so set about fitting that this morning.

back into the garage, well attemped to, far too much junk in there at the moment :rollin

out with the old, pip also mentioned that the braided lines to the wastegate are too small so took them off as well to take to pirtec to make some new one up.

but while i was at it, feeding wires through to the bay for the solenoid i decided to tidy this lot up a bit as well

much better
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v374/astragsi/DSC00132.jpg)

also decided to tidy the wiring for the gauges on the passengers side as well

then made a little bracket to hold the solenoid secure

a few new decals :Giggle

Need to see the AFR line graph as well to properly comment, hopefully the new boost controller will fix the late spooling of the turbo. As it should be coming in a lot earlier then that.

So did it make 448 at the fly?

Go for 6mm line and it will smooth out lovely. I had to swap from 4mm to get better control on a Tial 44mm wastegate !

for some reason i didnt get one so unable to put it up bud, it spools sooo much faster now than before, if the boost controller doesnt sort it then what else could it be??

yeh, 448fly but it was only the 2nd or 3rd run, had to stop because it was leaning out no matter how much more fuel he added.

yeh the lines are getting made up tomorrow hopefully, he also mentioned that it will help stop creep as well.

was looking at the wastegate the other day when i took the lines off, what does the threaded bar do, i mean, if i adjust it one way or another, what is the affect??

well i havent got my lines yet but thought i would do a bit of maintenance servicing. car wasnt held up with the jack either :rollin

first off was the fuel filter, sooo many people have said its such a pain in the ass, and yeh i have to agree but still managed to have it replaced in around 20 mins max :yes
was very dirty and partially blocked which wont be been helping anything.

then seeing as i was under there i decided to change the diff and gearbox oil.
diff oil was quick dirty as you can see, i dont know the history of this car so no clue as to how long it has been in there.

then turned the car around and back into the garage to do the gearbox. was surprising clean tbh
looking at where the filler is though, how on earth do people fill it back up, must use some sort of pump or something which i didnt have :3Confused

sooo inside the car and take the centre console out and feed a pipe down to the filler and put a funnel on the other end, problem solved :Thumbs-up  :Giggle

Star!!! Wish you had done the gearbox oil before I did mine! I had to mash the bottle into the gearbox cove to try and refill!

Which plugs do you unscrew on the diff? You got a pic? I think I remember seeing 3 plugs on mine, one low down (obv the drain), and then there\'s one half way up, and one at the top. Which one is the fill line? The middle one?

thanks, yeh ive seen the car around.

well since changing the oil in the diff and gearbox i have been getting a clunking from the diff area as i set off, it can be very temperamental though. think im going to change the oil again, what should be in there?? i put castrol Syntrax Universal in

as i dont know what diff is in there i got the rear of the car up again for a bit more room to have a good look around. now when i turn one wheel the other turns and is impossible to hold one while the other turning. does this mean i have a 1.5 or 2 way diff or is this normal?? :o

while the car was up i decided to fit my feed type skirts that i have as well but i have the stock, optional sideskirts fitted too so wasnt quite sure how i was going to fit them.
anyway just basically used some bodyshop glue stuff and some large self tappers that i kept over from a previous project. i knew they would come in handy :rollin

i had a 2 way on my 200sx and you would know if you had one because they clonk and bang and the wheels skip on slow tight turns... plus on de accel if you shift down too quick its like yanking on a handbrake that actually works lol...

saying that im partly convinced my rx7 has some aftermarket diff in it because it locks up easy on a down shift and also pulling out of junctions the inside wheel will chirp or skip....

saying that rx7\'s have torsen diff\'s i think so that could be just how they act??

Hi Karl - quick question - when you moved the fuse box, did you use the fuse ratings as a guide for the wire ratings to get? Currently moving my fusebox and I need to extend the loom - I\'m looking at things like cooling fans, demister, ABS  did you use 60A cable for all this?

Where did you get it all from? I\'m looking at VehicleWiringProducts ATM, was wondering if here were any preferred alternatives?
Cheers dude :)

nacho, i dont come to sunderland too often but if you try and get a video up or something of it running that would help. by reading your other thread though it does sound like you have done the rear rotor :( also go on youtube and type in blown rotary or something.

tbh si i carnt really remember what gauge wiring i used but 60a will be fine for all of them.

i also got all my stuff from VWP, great guys and super fast delivery. took me ages to get the order all done though lol

No worries dude, cheers muchly :) I feel your pain, I\'m just trying to sort out all the stuff i need for the little jobs like this, yours must have been a nightmre, I\'ve only got about 20 wires to extend, and it\'s driving me bonkers!
I\'#ve used VWP beforeand they\'ve always been great, just wanted to see if there were any better alternatives. I guess I just baulk at the thought of spending 40 odd quid on wires! :D /tightass
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on September 27, 2009, 12:36:45 PM
yeh it was a royal pain in the ass at the first, just sooo many wires to sort through. i then had to identify them all, looking at the colours and then going through the wiring diagrams and trace where they go and weather i needed them or not. i recon i spent the most time on this build sorting the wiring  :rollin

makes it all worth while in the end though bud :D

yeh, i think all my wires etc etc came to just over £240 :2eek

Looking good Karl, Im doing a service myself tomorrow so tackling the dreaded fuel filter lol. How often do the box/diff oils require a change as they both still feel smooth and were done 15k ago so wasnt gonna do them but while its on ramps your latest posts got me thinking.

Have you re-located your fuel filter then or is it stock position as ive read its more af a touchy-feely job as its near impossible to see above the diff?
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on September 27, 2009, 10:40:57 PM
thanks mate, im not sure how often they should be changed in the FD but with all the other cars i have had i have always done them around 30k, i suppose it depends how hard the car is driven. can find out for you though.

i actually left the filter in the stock position, i did think about moving etc but once under the car i had the old one off and new one back in place bolted up in about 15-20 mins.

basically once you get under there, you want to be toward the front of the diff and look right above it. there is two 10mm iirc bolts that need unbolting from the rear of the diff which hold the filter in place, once that is off the pipes are held on with them stupid spring style clamps, release them and out it pops. just remember to release the pressure out of the tank and watch your eyes for fuel as you will spill some. also note that which way the filter and bracket go.

little update from today, i was going to take the cover off the diff just to see what i had in there. well i decided against that for now as i didnt have any instant gasket left.

i have been talking to some rally guys about my clunking that i have been getting and they asked what oil i put in. i said just what i got recommended. anyway they said to try some other stuff, comma ls80w-90 GL5 specifically for lsd\'s. so out with the not so old and in with the new and hey presto the clunking has now seemed to have gone :D :D

Post by: karl_tate on October 09, 2009, 11:48:39 PM
thats all i did neil :) glad you got it sorted as well.

well im off to get my map finished next wednesday :D :D

in the mean time i have been sorting the issues that i had when i was on the dyno which was spiking and leaning out at the top end.

changed the fuel filter
fitted profec b spec 2
fitted 044 fuel pump
changed lines from wastegate
rewired fuel pump

so my lines finally turned up this week, but jesus, i didnt expect them to be so costly, two lines with fittings and some 6mm hose came to just under £100   good job i get them for free :Giggle :yes

i also got the fitting and fuel filter for the 044 from clive, great service,
came the next day.

after looking properly inside the "bucket" there is a slight slope and i wanted the filter at the bottom of the slope and to also get the pump at the right height. after a few measurements and a bit of hacking away at the fuel pump bracket it was all together and in.

tested to see how much power the pump is getting when running and it was 11.3, not good really and when i revved the car it went down to around 10.7. although i wasnt using this pump on the dyno this must of been the cause of it leaning out at the top????

so out came the barrel of wires, fuse and relay boxes that i cut out to find a relay. hey presto, the tns one will do nicely :)

ran an amp wiring power lead from the battery to the corner of the boot near the fuel pump, then cut the wire that is switched live and ran an suitable earth.

all in and very secure even though it doesnt look it. wanted as little wiring as possible that why i mounted it near the pump.

yeh i know that would be the sensible thing to do lol, its running fine atm... TOUCH WOOD! its had a rebuild not a massive amount of time ago as far as i know its stock ports receipt says nothing about ports so that is what im guessing, just wanted to go single lol... might wait till after xmas and i will have some more cash then get it rebuilt and ported with a single :)
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on October 21, 2009, 03:24:30 PM
Yeh thats what I would do. You then no its a fresh engine plus it wont cost as much cause you wil only have to buy the rebuilt kit and not have to worry about buying housings. Rotors etc etc.

Having said that. You will still make good power with stock ports with a resonable single.

yeh im not sure why im getting the little creep, new boost controller, i put a diaphragm in the WG when the engine was out and bigger WG lines

maybe its down to the WG and the boost controller fighting with each other, i have the yellow spring in the WG which is .8 bar iirc but i dont know, im still learning it all..... :rollin

well not much to report :Giggle

havent been near the car but decided to start it up as it hasnt been started for a while. well the battery had gone flat so had to get battery pack out and it started straight away but it sounded like a bridge as it was warming up and a lot of blue smoke which didnt seem to clear :(   also when it has warmed up it wasnt idleing too well and when i gave it a few revs there was some black smoke/fuel.....

if you look at the vid around 24 secs you can see all the smoke near the other car on the drive.

is it just because the dash is all disconnected or have i lost the map off the ecu because the battery has been dead

no updates, been in too much of a merry state lol

well i started it again the other day and there is no magic change, managed to sort the idle out better with adjustment of the screw on the TB (dont see why i needed to though??) but still sounds like a bridge. there was a bit of a hesitation to start with but im sure thats just down to the 10 and 11\'s, once it had warmed up a bit, it cleared.

there is still oil smoke, which does die down, but is still there with fuel smoke when given some load from the turbo.

gave it a little drive up the road but i didnt go far and is still kinda there all the time.

engine is coming out when i can be bothered, to fit the sump brace and tidy a few things so i will check the plugs and ignition system and hope its just that it needs a run out :(

well still trying to find out these little problems, took it for a longer drive and the blue/oil smoke has cleared which i had hope would. still fuel smoke when revved though.

ive been over all the wiring and sensors, the only other thing that i have changed is that i dont have the dash in, now weather its some sort of sensor/input i dont know :Hammer :xconfused

took the plugs out but i was expecting them to be bad from moving the car back and forth moving cars around on the drive.

first pic is the trailing, the plug on the right being the front rotor in both pictures.

Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on March 28, 2010, 11:55:34 PM
had a productive day today :chat

first off was to fit the braided OMP lines i got off si, thanks again bud. out with the old and in with the new.

what a carry on i had with my self to get them in place, without the washers falling off and having enough room... god i dont know how people change these with their engine in, what a mare :2Mad

then moved onto cleaning up the sump and bottom of the engine ready to fit the sump back in with the brace i got of danny. the designed grooves in the sump, i thought that there wouldnt be enough pressure evenly spread so i flatted them down.

then fitted the studs with some loctite and then got the sump and brace all bolted up with the engine mounts just about ready to go back in.

then fitted the braided clutch line i got off ebay, gave the engine a good wipe and clean down and got it back on the crane, had a little fight with it going back in but its always the same, comes out so easy but never wants to go back in its little home....

Looking good dude!
I must admit, I wouldn\'t relish the thought of putting those lines on!

Can I ask a quick wiring question? (As you are pretty much the wiring guru!) - on the rear plate on the pasenger side there\'s a water temp sender, I think it\'s for the dash gauge - have you any idea which of the looms the plug for that is on? It\'s either the engine harness or the alternator loom - I can\'t find it on mine, buit worrid I\'ve trimmed it :o

very good mate, can i ask if you can remove and replace the sump by dropping the subframe? I have a leak at the mo so it needs re sealing.

is it just quicker to lift the engine?

I was thinking of doing this by undoing the subframe and the front shocks, to drop the frame a few inches
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: SiH on March 29, 2010, 12:17:23 PM
Problem with dropping the frame is that it will put your alignment out, unless you manage to get it back on mm perfect. If you haven\'t had your car aligned, of course, that\'s no bother :D

Post by: karl_tate on March 29, 2010, 06:03:23 PM
in the picture of the clutch line, if you look where the support bracket is bolted to the bulkhead and follow straight down, thats where the plug comes out of the main engine loom. only a very short wire, im unsure which one it goes on off the top of my head.

the other plug is on the alternator loom. they are both identical plugs.

hope that helps si, if not i will get some pics for ya.

kris, doing the sump with the engine still in place, is possible but i imagine not so easy, it was just easier to take the engine out for me, i didnt want it leaking again, although i dont know if ive cured it until its got oil and been running
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: Initial-D on March 29, 2010, 08:37:13 PM
You\'ll find its the yellow/white cable on the engine management harness that connects up to the water temp sensor on the rear iron by the oil pressure sender.

Good work on the engine, I\'ve just got mine back in too, seems to take ages fiddling around with the electrics and fuel lines!:Giggle
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on March 29, 2010, 11:12:45 PM
cheers for that ben, will have to label them up properly, dont know why i didnt when i redid the wiring  an idea to do si if you haven\'t already.

i dont mine doing the lines, but im sure yours have all been changed? its the fiddly bits that annoy me :3Confused

what has yours been out for??
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: Initial-D on April 01, 2010, 08:02:09 PM
I had a problem with high water pressure, turns out it was the rear housing getting too warm. It\'s back in but now but I haven\'t had much time free to finish since I had a ski trip. I\'m currently doing braided fuel lines and a custom engine loom so there is less clutter and I can check all the wiring is in good condition.

It\'s a nice project but I just wish the weather was nicer!
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on April 02, 2010, 06:33:12 PM
not good, what did it turn out to be, causing it to get hot?? good feeling getting the engine back in though. the stock loom is terrible, who ever designed it needs shooting :Giggle

weather is getting there now, i hope to be back out for may but there is still abit to do, just not enough money :( :(

had a good today, no relaxing or drinking for me.... just what i enjoy doing haha.

rerouted the wastegate lines as they rattled before, then just as i way laying the lest of the engine loom the plug on the water neck just snapped off. cut the shoulder off so i could solder them back together then just super glued the shoulder back on.
the other problem i had was my clutch, the pedal just dropped to the floor and would not bleed back. took the master cylinder off and stripped it down to find that it was stuck. the top seal is buggered but i cleaned it out and put it in the freezer overnight to harden up a bit. i need to get the car out and mobile for tuesday.

put the cylinder back together, back in place and connected it up, bled out and was fine :D got a rebuild kit on the way soon hopefully.

after that i got all the loom plugged back in the right places, all the fuel lines connected up and fpr back in, all the vaccum and pressures lines for boost gauge, fpr, wi etc etc and it was getting there. then plenum, downpipe, oil cooler lines and ps.

then got the rad, intercooler and ast bolted in, connected water and intercooler pipes back up and it was ready for a good check over :D

all looked good so there was only one thing to do, she fired up straight away.. happy happy days :wiggle

the reason i need it mobile for tuesday is its going for a respray :WaveBye

Yup :)
It\'s an AWESOME colour - like CYM but deeper with more of a flip to it - I reckon it\'d look amazing on yours. :D

Hard to capture it in pictures, but is probably the best approximation I could find:
(https://oixmpq.blu.livefilestore.com/y1m4Ib-2UTqo_DR9pt6XYa6CDBmkwnlw-ll1xt5NGwddKIOdvppFAuqeq3n8Vyc7CkJjOS9jzi-0kx_r9nd3nNq26HgCYVGhsh8N9eSpT1UBkOX4Z8e4zn29wRpOcgjFK25ApLk4OGM9a0wX8VCyc_LCw/Clio200.jpg)

Looks good in all weathers, but really comes alive in flourescent lighting and direct sunlight.

SRBPower are cheap as chips for Ultralites right now.
Will have a scout - will to buy SH?
for 1k with tyres new you are looking at either ebay specials, or special offers on Rota/Ultralite.

got a dashboard last week off kris to mess around with. had a play about with it today, got it stripped down and shaped a bit of plastic to fit where the centre speaker is and started fibreglassing.

left that drying and stripped the centre vents down as the surround is cracked and i ended up spraying them a darker black satin.

then sanded the FG down with a flap wheel on a grinder cause im lazy and then gave it a covering of filler and left it at that.

its back but something was wrong by the time i got i home, 3 miles... i followed my dad and he pulled over just after we had set off complaining about the light being on main beam, the thing was they weren\'t... got home, went to turn it off and it was still running OMFG....

anyway, the reason i think, is because i had to take the arch liners out to do the arch\'s they didnt put them back in, well i didnt think to check. quite a few wires messed up. something else to fix, why can nothing never so smoothly :rollin

haha, just going to cut it out and resolder it all and tuck it away a bit and give me more room in the arch, as the liners are going to have to be modified in some way to make them fit back on.

thanks ben, i really was lucky, there is some pretty thick wires in that lot and could of easily started a fire.

yeh i know what you mean, if i was going to do a rewire again then i would do it differently with even less clutter. its all tucked away neatly now with the arch liners all nicely in, will have to do some more work with them when the new wheel\'s turn up tho.

well another update..

got a superpro bush kit from matt (mph customs) but i wont be fitting them for a while i dont think.

started out with fitting the front bumper, when it was on before there wasnt any support for it at the bottom so made up some pikey brackets but they do the job well, took a bit of time to get all the angles but got there in the end.

then moved onto fitting all the interior back in, gave it a bit of clean and its nearly finished, just hate that bit of yellow on the passenger side tho :(

just got it fit the skirts and its pretty much there, well still need the new wheel\'s and then lower it more. having said that, the adjuster\'s on the suspension have split and i dont really want to risk breaking them further

Not planning on any shows this season maybe a few BMW/Euro ones dunno.

Wheels look phat yo! lol

I would say depending on how good your tyre fitter is 225/35 or 40 on the front 235/35s on the rear for a crazy good stretched look.

Or 235\'s front and 245s rear for normal kinda stretch.

i was running a 225 on a 9.5 on my 200sx when i had it, i would go 225/40 fronts and 245/40 rears... or 235/40 rears.

well skirts all fitted up now, then starting adjusting the suspension, but its too low now. i also need some new studs for the front, as when i fitted the spacers  on the front they needed cutting down but i have no need for the spacers now resulting in them being too short.

any one have any or some spare hubs kicking around i could nick them off?? also how are they fixed, are they bolted or just on a spline and pushed in from the back??

presumably there 18s and a price with tyres would be good. probably to rich for me but if you dont ask will never know:Giggle

Also what sizes are the tyres?
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on May 02, 2010, 07:23:33 PM
yeh 18\'s

well i was going to take the front tyres off and use them on the rear for the new wheels, probably looking for around £550 with two 888\'s.

they are 245/40
Title: Project rebuild....

Good price will pass though looking for something a bit wider on the rears
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: karl_tate on May 02, 2010, 07:56:39 PM
no worries, but you could just fit wider tyres on the other two and have the 245\'s on the front.

well took the calipers and discs off and bashed the old studs out and thanks to clive i had 10 new one\'s

took some measurement\'s and cut them all down. then just simply pushed them in place and used some washers and a nut and pulled it through with a breaker bar using the mole grips with a jack to hold the hub from moving. who needs the gym hahaha

and all back on together.

still got a few things to do before saturday.

getting the tyres fitted tomorrow so i will then be able to raise the suspension, im going to put a jubilee clip around the adjuster on the suspension for now, think im just going to buy a new kit.
insure and tax it
removed and rebuild the clutch master cylinder and bleed the clutch and it will be something like ready.

need some sort of aerial tho, not too sure what to look for??

but i swear this car hates me, oil leak is back :Grrr but not sure where from this time, will have to get it in the garage for a closer look, oh and just as i was getting near the drag strip the last bank holiday it developed a misfire on any sort of boost.

swapped the plugs out for a set of 9\'s but didnt bother racing. both the leading and trailing plugs on the rear rotor were blacker than the front rotor

also found a pinhole leak on the tb water hose so fixed that and on the way home it was pulling well :D

now last weekend i gave it some stick in 1st and it started hunting from normal idle at 1100rpm to 1700rpm like there was an air leak but couldnt see anything in the dark so just drove home. sometimes when i let it idle it would idle normal :2Confused but when out of vacuum it would misfire like before but i still have the 9\'s in??

going to take the plugs out and have a good check over everything, not really sure what is going on.

right,

tested power to coils, got 11.6 and the battery was at 12.1. not sure if that is a lot or not but it could be a different story when the engine is running and revving hard.

so cut into the TNS relay power which when the ignition was switched on it would power up, tapped in a new wire, soldered and heat shrinked. then just found the power for the twinpower and from the car loom side (which were together already), cut joined the other end of the new wire, soldered, heat shrinked and job done :D now getting exactly what the battery is giving.

got some new magnecor 10mm leads and fitted them, just need to decide which plugs, i keep reading on the us forums and fduk about the b10egv??? also went to collect a dragon diff brace the other day as well.

then had a little moment and decided that while the plenum was off that i was going to spray it matt black, the reason being was i bought it just to see if it affects cooling  as its heat paint upto 600c and was going to use it on the DP and LIM. plus i was sick of trying to keep it clean :(

and back together hmmm....

not updated in ages, havent touched the car until last week, decided to start stripping the suspension ready for the new bushes and a lick of paint. stripped the front drivers side and burnt the bushes out as my press was too small.

painted and rebushed, need bushes for the antiroll bar drop links and i can start putting it back together and then do the other side.

cheers tony, i try my best lol

got all the bushes pushed in ready for refitment. started on the drivers side, got the top done and then bottom in ready to bolt in but when i came to fit the brace that goes between drivers and passengers side, there was no way it could fit with the newer bushes.

as you can see here, with the old bushes, the slieve would fit inside the washer that is part of the brace and then slot in between the the arm and mount.

but there is no way that its going its going to fit with the new bushes so it will be up forsale if any one know if its standard or aftermarket. its adjustable in the middle with no markings from what i can see. will get some better pics.

then hub back on, bolted up and new track rod ends fitted and thats the drivers side just about done. got to do the bushes for the anti roll bar drop links and paint the caliper as i dont think im going to polish them.

exact same process on the the pax side and ripped the ABS out and associated pipes and left it at that. not sure when the next update will be tho :o

well this is the brace

so... antiroll bar links, didnt want to fork out for some so decided to try and make something out of my originals. not sure if it will work just yet so will have to see.

i made a mould of the end and the burnt the rubber out. then used some polyurethane liquids. will see how they are once they set properly.

also removed a load more crap out of the bay, but now ive removed the abs, ive realised how crap the paint looks now and all the bits i missed :(

decided to make a splitter for the front but the paint job didnt really go to plan, bit of a mess but looks fine at a distance :o

then got the rear up in the air and started stripping it all out. was quite easy really, was expecting it to be a big job but was struggling a bit holding it on my own.

Awesome work man!
I know what you mean about the rear asembly - get a mate to help you put it back in, it\'s a PITA on your own - just for the ease of maneouvering it helps to a have a \'jack buddy\'.

Alsow ith you on teh bay thing - mine looked pretty godo before I did a load of the rewiring, now it\'s an absolute mess - scratched, scarred, and chipped. I\'m just going to bit the bullet, make sure everything is bob on, then take the block out and get it painted up by a pro with 2 pack.

bit more progress this afternoon.

got the subframe back in, wasnt as easy as taking it out but nothing ever is but got there in the end. diff brace back on, antiroll bar links and its nearly there. then rebuilt one caliper back up and bolted that on. then it was a case of bolting the brake line on and handbrake cables. just the other caliper to clean, strip and paint and the rear is finished finally.

painted the tank, polished up the exhaust and fitted it, sprayed the arches black and pretty much left it at that.

I would suggest a grommet in the hole in the first picture where there are 2 pipes coming through.

Will you not experience a bit if spongyness in your brake pedal without using solid lines?
Title: Project rebuild....
Post by: SiH on March 28, 2011, 08:29:25 AM
I see you\'ve gone the same route that I ended up doing for the lines - good stuff.
Might be worth having a look at bulkhead conenctors and splitting the lines to run them through the inner wings - looks a bit tidier and it\'s a bit more secure :)

I totally know what you mean about the paint - mine looked great when I first did it, but after neearly a year of shifting stuff around in the bay it now looks like total ass, and I need to pull the block and do it again :(
I think this time I\'m going to pay someone to do it properly.

Post by: karl_tate on March 28, 2011, 09:56:36 PM
there is a grommit there now, was in the process of fitting it. not sure about the spongyness, will find out soon tho lol

i thought you did one port to one caliper and the other port to the other caliper and split that to the rear?? i did think about bulkhead fittings etc but it\'l be fine for now haha

its a ....., plus mine is even worse now the abs etc has gone, but its going to have a half ass paint for now and maybe do it again later on in the year....not looking forward to masking it off :(

Go look at the cost of bulkhead adapters and you probably won\'t think of using them again!

The T piece bulkhead adapter I used in the pic below to split the front brake circuit was £28 alone not including the three connectors attached to it at a tenner a piece :(

In the second pic you can see the 90 deg bulkhead adapter going to the front wheel well. Your rubber grommit probably does just as good a job.

hey karl, quick question, what sort of inlet temps do you normally get with your v mount setup, ie cruising and full boost to redline.

im trying to decide whether to stay front mount as i build it back up or go v mount for the added cooling for the radiator

Karl, what is your front splitter made from ?

I have thought about using marine grade ply (like Matt) as carbon is expensive.

Thanks

last saturday morning i went to get an MOT...everything fine until i get to the brakes. there was no pressure at the rear. quickly made up a copper pipe to bypass the valve and all was good. thats the second one ive had. then driving back from the garage. pulled out from a junction, gave it some throttle in second but at around 5k it was not sounding right, was still pulling like a train but backed off, didnt get chance to see the AFR as it was that quick. as i back off changed up a gear and started cruising but all was not good. fluctuating boost gauge, no throttle responce and sounding like a tractor.

totally gutted. anyway sunday afternoon ripped it out and stripped the ancillaries off. another problem i didnt want is the clutch is fduk\'d. its only done 5000 miles. not sure whats happened. the thing is it felt fine and it\'s never slipped under load. its also made a mess of the flywheel too.

i know guys, was gutted...

well the motor held up really well apart from a little scoring on the front housing which will need replacing. era said that it ran lean on the front rotor which caused the damage. it was also really dry and has had big heat around the plug holes??

rebuild parts ordered along with some scr seals and some more porting (http://www.fduk.org/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif) (http://www.fduk.org/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

wow, its been a while since i touched the car. been turning the engine over weekly though.

cleared the garage out and got the peril back in its lair for the winter work once again. forgot how stiff the car was after working on the daily, which is also lowered. jacked one front corner so the wheel was only just off, looked at the rear which also came up, which it always has. walked around the other side to take the other front off, and that was also off the ground (http://www.fduk.org/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif) haha

I\'m not sure that many people really know. Most of the time people buy off the shelf from the tuners. Rx7club does have some info but it\'s gets technical very quick. I have a book about intake and exhaust design but it\'s not that much use.

Best recommendation is try and keep the runners equal.

Post by: leeroy_25 on January 08, 2012, 06:24:16 PM
If it was me I would look at a good few manifolds and come up with something along those lines! As Shaun says trying to keep runners at equal lengths is quite important. diameter of tube wise Bigger is not necessarily better. You need enough size to get the gas out of the engine but small enough to have good air speed entering the turbo and get good spool. But the I guess that depends on what your power goal is and where you expect your power band to be..

Good luck with it.. Within reason as long as the joins have a nice smooth transition and the shape is flowing I don\'t think you can go too far wrong!?

then fitted the oil cooler lines back up, sorted the power steering pipes and starter motor. also fitted the rad and intercooler back in too.

ive been a bit behind in updating this :p

well got a delivery of bits. went to test fit the v band clamp but it wouldnt sit right on the exhaust housing. the outlet is a beveled type flange as you can see so its going to have to be milled down.

decided that i didnt like where the twin power and ignitor was and i wanted to put a good power source on the ignitor. but then looking at the twin power loom, coil loom etc im going to make up a new loom for the whole lot which means i have been doing more chopping, soldering and re looming.

going to chop these plugs out too
