What oil do you put on the plates, rotor etc? (as per the DIY vids)
Anything special, or just normal mineral oil stuff that you would use in the engine?
just normal mineral oil y dont need loads
cheers.......
Haven\'t watched them for a while (not something you tend to watch loads) so could be wrong but i\'m sure they say to us 2 stroke oil on the build
Adam
I\'m using 2-stroke as this generally burns better than normal oil so wont clog everything up when first started
2 stroke... cheers mate.
Quick question... is it ok to leave it a week or so once fully built before starting it up?
Just with my work etc, I might have the block together, but not actually in the car and started for a week or two.
Dont see why not, just turn it by hand every so often, say once a day to stop the oil draining to one place and this will help lubricate when it does get started.
I\'m no expert tho as mine\'s currently waiting for parts so i can rebuild it :D so someone may suggest otherwise :)
Just dont get oil on those water seals!
Companies sell rebuild blocks so i\'d of thought it would be fine to have it sat about for a while like they must do. As has already been said, just give it a turn over before putting it back in :D
Adam
just a question Jim, im curious how easy was the rebuild to do? and how much experience did u have before doin it...i would like to do a rebuild some time.
Cheers
Kris
If you have the DVD\'s it makes it alot easier.
If you\'re confident with a spanner/socket set etc then it should be fine.
I had in the past removed an engine from a FD and swapped everything to a spare block and put the engine back into the car. Prior to this I hadn\'t really done any work on engines short of fitting induction kits, exhausts, boost controllers etc.
Just take your time with it and download the manuals also.
It is actually quite simple as there aren\'t that many parts to these engines.
im guna get mine rebuilt professionaly but wudnt mind doin my next one...would love to work for a rotory garage
I also done it in my spare room. Would be miles easier in a garage with an engine stand etc.
lol bet ur missus wernt happy lol
Yeah.. oil everywhere.. petrol.. coolant. Not good on wooden floors! lol
lol at least it give her an excuse to redecorate lol so your both happy
did you get the build dvd from rotary art?
yeah........
cheers, i know not a lot sorry!
how much is the DVD and is it very detailed?
I think the set is about £40. Pops up on ebay every now and then. And yeh it seems detailed enough to do a basic rebuild :D
Adam
It is good enough.. (the DVD). I think it goes on a bit to be honest. for example using loads of time to show you grinding down side seals, one after another after another. When they could have just showed you one!
The "apprentice" guy in the vid is a bit of an annoying fat ....... but hey ho! :)
:rollin yeh i know what you mean. And your right about the going on a bit with the side seal. Still, they show you it all and it should be enough for the amatuer builder :D
Maybe one day i\'ll actually have to use mine in anger :rollin
Adam
For someone who\'s never rebuilt an engine, it\'s good.
Doubt I would need to use mine again though. There\'s not much to these engines.
Did make me laugh when he dropped one of the apex seals in to the block when it was nearly complete and they had to strip it back down.
They do look simple enough to work on but its always nice to have something to help you if you get stuck :D
Adam
I\'ve just gutted out my shed and called it the rebuild shed now... for when it next needs done! lol
Not allowed in the spare room again! :(
