Title: Auto to Manual Conversion
Post by: FA2A on March 31, 2004, 05:20:04 PM
I\'m just wondering if anyone has done an automatic to manual trans conversion on a 3rd gen 7, I already have one manual set a side for a project car that I\'ll be starting either in July or even as late as December depending on work.  I found a really nice 3rd Gen with only 45k miles on it for only 18k(US) but the downside its an auto, just looking for some feedback

One of the Martin\'s on here had his auto converted a year or so ago over here. I dont think its that much of a ball ache...

Hopefully he\'ll reply some time, he\'s a very busy guy though unfortunately.

Cool beans, I\'m thinking ether using the stock Manual trans from the project car and putting it in to the new auto (if I buy it) or just getting another gforce T56 (the kind I\'m getting for the project car), I\'m still up in the air, wanted to know if there were any problems or if its a pretty clean procedure for most tans. I don\'t plan on doing much with the daily driver, but I do want it to be a manual.

What do the gforce 56 boxes go 4 out there? whats the score on fitting to an FD? what do you have to shorten/lengthen, or do they come mod\'d to fit?

They\'re about $4,500 - $4,900 I\'m pretty sure they\'re ok "out of the box", if not I\'m then 100% sure they have a conversion for them.

Hmm, just wondering how they measured up to a stock S6 box. I have a 20B in my car and its located such that the box will be 6" further back than a normal FDs. Was just wondering if it would help my prop-chopping and stick location issues, such as they are (which is far from insummountable). Just considering the options...

Cheers bud,

yeah, I\'m planning on putting a 20b in the project car, I havent heard of anyone having problems with stick placement, but I could be way off, I\'ve just been told from a few people that the T56 is a solid way to go for the 20b set-up.  I\'ll know a lot more when I start the project, I\'m a roto-rookie and the fourms have  been helping a lot and I\'ve been doing a lot of research on my own.

Depends on how you mount the motor. On the stock FD mounts the bell housing will be in the stock location, but as we\'re using custom mounts and the motor is also located further the motor/box combo are 6" closer to the back of the car - hence shorter propshaft and shifter relocation.

If u do it how Petit does theres you dont have the problem with prop or shifter - but u get the weight further forward which we wanted to avoid.
