Ive owned my RX7 fd for about 5 months now I love it, except the terrible fuel consumption and my boost probs I sometimes get. My engine has reached the 60k mile mark it still seems to run fine tho and the engine is completely standard even standard air filter and exhaust.
I have been looking into the cost of a rebuilt 13b and single turbo kit, I am after getting around 400hp from my 7.
I have also looked into the 2jzswap.com 1jzgte swap, I have worked out the cost of the complete kit with all parts plug and play at £3000 exc post and vat/duty then i need to source an engine with a r154 manual 5sp tranny. The website claim that the motor adds 60kg to the front of the car and a modified bonnet is required due to engine height. I am told the conversion kit does fit a RHD car. The best 1jz to get imo is the 1996+ 2.5vvti single turbo unit i think its 285bhp standard.
Quoted from the website forum
"Ok guys, here is a quick rundown of all the things you will need for the conversion, All of these items can be purchased in one spot.... www.tech2motorsports.com (http://www.tech2motorsports.com/)
Swap kit
JZ engine set your choice of tranny
Wiring Service
Intercooler kit
Radiator Kit
Hose kit
PS kit
Dakota Boxes for Speedo and Tach
A/C is optional but is best to opt for it when the wiring is being done!
All pricing is available on the website and there are many other lil things you may or may not need to complete your swap. This is just a base list to get your swap in the car.
I always reccomend that you service the engine before you put it in, ie seals and gaskets. Better to do it before you put it in.

Sorry in advance to any rotor lovers.
Search, this was posted not so long ago. and not so long ago the time before that :2Confused
If you want a 1jz get an old supra.
I think this was asked just a few days ago, anyway the short of it was why put in a 1jz when a 2jz isn\'t much different nd why put in a 2jz when a ls series v8 has more power and gives better weight distribution.
I did do a search on here for 2jzswap, 1jz, and supra engine swap but only got one post with not much info in. I dont want a 1jz I want a reliable, fast, fairly good mpg rx7 as its a daily driver. I dont know what mpg you guys get but £5 per 30min of carefull driving is what I get. The ls engine must almost be as light as the 13b then if the 1jz is only 60kg heavier thats good for 5.7 v8. I don\'t think id go for the ls as the fuel prob would be the same.
60kg thats like haveing a small cow stuck in you front bumper.
The ls will use little fuel when driven normaly the car will move on tickover.
1 or 2 jz\'s are also pretty close to as thirsty as a 13b.
After seeing the 2jz on the driftworks car I was completely gobsmacked. Either option would be awesome IMO. Arn\'t the 2jz guys in the states the ones getting the best results? I remember reading some stuff on rx7club about them trying to catch up with the 2jz peeps?

No way my 2JZ turbo supra defo uses less than my 7.

The 2jz imo would be the best for high hp and good torque, but really like the look of the 1j especially the vvti unit which had yamaha help develop it. I dunno if id do it just looks a good option.
Just been looking at a thread on rx7club
http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=681469&page=7
Looks like the steering rack gets in the way unless you either lift the front of the engine and have a big bonnet mound or you have to remove the firewall and place the engine further back.
Does anyone know if these are also issues with the ls1 or 1jz conversions?
hi all
im actually getting a few bits together for this conversion. Ive managed to get a 1jz non vvti 2.5tt engine, a v161 supra getrag gearbox (may go for R154 instead), just looking for a shell then will order some bits from 2jzswap.com / tech2motorsports
any advice would be much appreciated
try the US rx7club forum for info as no one on here has done the conversion in the UK
i have looked at this conversion and was going to do one but the ls always comes out on top, the 1/2jz is a very very good engine, but its long and heavy, and by the time you have brought the turbo upgrade (which you will do) the intercooler, etc it works out more than a ls package, and is heavy over the front which may or not bother you,you need to add a bonnet to the price as a ls fit under a std bonnet. i notice they use a torque arm set up on to the back of the gearbox with a joint which is not the best set up, it puts a piviot into the middle of the drive line (i know its how i did my first one). i am not anti this motor it does make a good car but add up all the costs before you choose,
I remember one of these on the front cover of an American mag somthing like 10 years ago so thats where your going to find info,
There was one in a franchised article to most of the Brit mags a few months back, yellow one done under the banner of IIRC something imaginative like "1jzswap.com" or somesuch. Why the hell you\'d want to, I dunno

Bit of a random question, but has noone considered the lexus alloy v8? Remember seeing something somewhere about these being easily adapted to a supra manual box. 4L would make me think plenty of torque, and seen a lexus barge for sale recently for less than 500 notes for the whole car, and less than 90k on it, if I remember correctly.

i did once consider using the lexus v8 + 2 turbo\'s into supra mkiv, but went for the 2jz and single conversion
there is a german guy (//www.asia-unlimited.com) who did a 2JZ swap.

here\'s your answer...
reliable - keep an eye on oil levels and water temperatures
fast - it\'s already fast ;)
fairly good mpg - stay off boost and cruise on 5th for a bit each day
...Just keep the 13B!!! ;)
Audi 2.2 I5 turbo ;) Shorter, way lighter that the 1JZ, capeable of the same power, but bombproof with it. I\'m still measuring up and musing, but looks like it\'ll fit in really nicely with no steering rack or bonnet issues. My S4 that the 5 sylinder came out of returned 30mpg rolling average on a mix of motorway and town despite weighing twice what the rex does, and an easy 40 if driven sensibly on the motorway too.
To be honest the thing that attracted me to the FD3S is the 13b in the first place. The exoticness, the noise, the revs. It\'s bad enough wanting to stick some yankee pig iron under the bonnet (no disrespect, and I know they use ally nowdays) but an Audi I5 is a new low..... :Giggle
[RANT] It\'s like when Americans buy an old Countach and replace the carbed V12\'s because they\'re unreliable and "ain\'t got enough torque dude" what an ace way to spoil a perfectly good car.
If that\'s your cup of tea then fine, personaly I\'d rather subject myself to a weeks worth of genital torture. In fact if I did, I think that\'s what the wife would do to me, in fairness she\'d be right. [/RANT]
Lol. Likewise, I was attracted to the rotary because it\'s different and I like a challenge. I tried to love it, and even went as far as doing a (successful) rebuild myself. I feel I have fair grounds for saying after all I\'ve been through with it, I simply don\'t like the Mazda rotary. If it floats your boat fair enough, but just not my cup of tea at all.
I have a car I like that owes a fair bit of money with an engine I have no love for. It\'s currently running very well, but I can\'t stand the \'what\'s it going to do today\' fear when wielding the key :rollin
For one reason or another (to be fair, not all rotary related) it doesn\'t look likely I\'ll be getting my money back out, so why not sell the rotary, take up the challenge and do something different with it :3gears-lh
There are my reasons for considering a conversion anyway.
The Audi was the other way around btw - Fell in love with the engine, but didn\'t really like the car in the end.
I sold an FD with no engine a while back and I didn\'t have a single serious call from someone that wanted to put a rotary back in, despite it actually being registered as a 1.3 and pre cat requirement. Even I was fairly shocked.
I take your point on the V8 - that wouldn\'t be my thing either - but I feel the smallish turbo I5 isn\'t too out of sorts compared to many other options. At least it\'s not a 2.0 turbo 4 pot ;) It does have one other thing going for it that really appeals to me: Never been done before. :Giggle
If you don\'t like the rotary then don\'t buy an RX. Simples
I don\'t get these people buying Rx\'s then coming on a Rotary club and slagging off the Rotary engine.

Thats a bit harsh, i cant see anywhere were he is actually slagging off the rotary engine, merely stating facts about fuel consumption and the dreaded 60k marker (though many engines have surpast this milestone). TBF the look of the RX7 are second to none and if its that which has attracted him to own one then he can choose to put which ever engine he wants to in it
It wouldn\'t be me though. I love the sound of the rotary on start-up. I could listen to that beautiful sound all day long :3gears-rh

Haha youve kind of lost the plot here, I would bet money that nobody daily drives a Countach, they would be collectors or enthusiasts so they dont care about mpg. Ive never heard of v8\'s in countach\'s only kit cars, but agree that would ruin it putting that in there.
The rotary engine is an amazing peice of kit, small, lightweight, powerfull. The perfect ingredients for racing, but in my opinion thats it. It good for weekend fun, racing, second car type thing, but if you wanted to realistically use one as a daily driver, you would have to have a lot of spare cash and time to work on it or get it worked on. I have gone through quite a few cars since posting on here and currenty daily drive a 05 BMW 645 and yes its cheaper to run then the rx7. About 2 weeks ago I drove across europe on cruise control at 110mph for upto 3 hours at a time, now seriously could a rotary fd do that.
Saying this I still have an fd in the garage that im building up to use for hillclimb events and for that I wouldnt dream of changing the engine.
Hey lucasl - don\'t spose you have a red J-reg FD with number plate J277? Just that i saw my old one for sale on Pistonheads being sold and the seller was saying they were planning on putting a 1JZ engine in it.

Not you then! LOL
