Title: Hard to start from cold :o(
Post by: rx-dave on November 24, 2008, 10:08:41 PM
I recently bought an 1994 M plate RX7 from a lad who\'s hardly used it over the past 2 years. It\'s been a real bugger to start from cold and i\'ve had to bump start her a few times on these cold mornings. The battery is new and i\'ve replaced the plugs but it\'s still no better.
When i\'ve bump started her she pops and bangs quite badly and won\'t idle until she\'s warm. Once warmed up she drives / idles & boosts like a dream.........any ideas greatly appreciated :)
Dave.

What temperature plugs have you got in ?

Confirm what plugs your running chap, mine starts on the second go now that its cold as and i\'m running 9\'s in leading and trailing.

Might be worth dropping down to 8\'s or even 7\'s in leading chap

Check what voltage your battery holding? Spray plenty of WD40 in your high tension leads etc more so if your not driving it much as the moisture works its way in everything?

Hi guys, i think they are 9\'s but i\'ll check them tomorrow and as advised i\'ll drop down to 7\'s if they are 9\'s. I didn\'t think of that so many thanks for the tip...............hopefully that\'s all it is :Thumbsup!

i had a similar issue with mine come the cold weather, dropped from 11.5\'s to 9\'s and problem was solved...go cooler plugs to avoid the common winter flooding

Mine starts really easily from cold on 9\'s - but that\'s with a fresh engine this year.

After reading up i\'ve noticed a few other possible clues..........my cooling fans are on even with a stone cold engine, the low water light and warning sound come on even though the water is fine. I changed the standard ecu to another standard ecu it started at once but would only idle, if i touched the throttle it died and then backfired rather loudly before re-starting. Do you think it may be water temp sensor related?

Could be low compression ??

But try to change the plugs for lower ones first to make sure its not just them

Tried new plugs but i can\'t seem to find any 7\'s or 8\'s, i think i\'ll drop it off to a garage as it\'s driving me mad now, RX7\'s are truely a love/hate relationship :spank

i hate to say this but sounds like rebuild time, prob water seal failure.. i had this with my first one and all your syptoms are identical, if you have 9`s in i honestly cant see colder plugs helping so i`d save the money..

I\'d agree with ^^^

It doesn\'t look too good. Get it compression tested etc and see what the story is.

Ah well, sh1te happens i suppose. I\'ll get a comp check done and then whip out the motor.

so are you actually losing any water?

In a word no, the level is fine and it didn\'t seem to lose any on a long drive. I\'ve been told (not sure if it\'s right or wrong) that there\'s be condensation on the plugs and signs of a light staining or surface rust on them if the water seals had gone. If this statement is incorrect then appologies in advance :Giggle
Who would be the best person to take it to, i live in Blackwood, South Wales.

if u get the car running and remove the rad cap, sometimes when your seals have gone you`ll see the coolant bubbling away, also mayo on the oil cap and dip stick is quite common, but kinda normal 2 if that makes any sense lol
Is there loads of white smoke coming from the exhaust even when its warmed up?

Mine was pumping out heaps and heaps of white smoke and revving at about 3K idle.

Mine just seemed to happen out of the blue, fine one day.. not the next.

I would get it compression tested mate. I didn\'t with mine, but it was an excuse to rip it apart.

Thanks to all for the input,  no mayo and no smoke at all apart from the usual slightly smokey start up. I started it up this evening after about 6 attempts and it ran well but when i rev it it\'ll pop and bang really loud and the fumes are eye watering..............s0dding thing!!!!!!!
I only bought this one as it had nice leather seats and a mad music system which i was going to put into my own RX7, wish i hadn\'t bothered now :Tongue1

Couple of other questions / things you might want to think about.

Have you checked out the HT leads?  replacing might put more of a spark in your plugs. :D

Is the car standard?  If things have been changed and you have a stock ECU then that could be your problem.  The popping and banging on overrun is normal but only to a degree - if it\'s loud and always happens, then you\'re overfuelling (or not getting enough air in there)

No mayo and no smoke makes me think problem is likely to be ecu, leak in the air intake system, or poor ignition.  Your comment about fumes also makes me think the exhaust is worth a look. :burnout

If you get really stuck PM me - I have some spare plugs including 7\'s that I picked up in Japan last summer and can sort you out

Finally, you asked about the best place to take it to?  IMHO, and from personal experience, your best bet is Hayward Rotary at Newbury.  Probably closest to you as well.
