Title: DIY Engine porting...
Post by: Jim_rx7 on November 23, 2008, 10:13:09 PM
I\'ve been looking for a guide to porting. Ie, what tools needed, how to do it etc.

I know you can buy templates, but can\'t seem to find any DIY guides.

I\'m looking fr whatever I can get away with with stock turbos. Aggressive street port?

thanks in advance.

Jim

Yeah.. I\'ve seen the pineapple racing templates. I also have the rotary 4dvd box set on order.

I never knew the templates came with instructions etc?

Really need to know what tools/equipment I would need.

I DIY ported my ports while I was rebuilding my engine last winter, I\'ve learnt a lot but wouldn\'t say I was an expert so any advice I give, I would get it double checked before acting on it. :D

Firstly I was lucky/unlucky enough to need new plates and housings so had a fresh start on everything, but it also gave me an old set of plates and housings to practice on.   Which was quite lucky as the first ports that I came up with were just under 11mm from the water seal, which if put together would have eaten a side seal. :Hammer
I was told that 12mm from the inner water seal was close enough for a street port and mine appears to be running very well so far.

So first off here is DanDan having a practice on a primary port.

Finished test primary port, you can see how close it is to the inner water seal, far to close...

Here is the home made template that my mate DanDan came up with and I used.

If you\'re doing your own porting then you should be prepared for the worst most dull time consuming job ever and one that was very very very very very tedious. :Snoring   That is the porting of the channels the primary ports being the worst as they are small and thin. :2Mad

Oh and don\'t forget to port the exhaust ports too. :D

im no expert but those exhaust ports look HUGE... what turbo are you planning to run with that setup?

They\'re not that large, I think one picture is slightly larger than the other....possibly down to my poor photoshop skills.

I\'m running a GT35r and yes it does spool up very quickly. :D

whats the difference if you just port the exhaust, just the inlet compared,  to both say on a normal street port.  what dya thinky. do some peeps just port the exhaust to help that rotor spin a bit better, its what im thinking about doing as the inlet port opening means you throw all economy out the window ouch

btw im drinking vodka cos my fd isnt ready till the end of the week and i aint got **** to do, at ten to 3 oh woe is my. Without my rx i have nothing to let off steam with.
