Title: APEXI Power FC ECU + Commander
Post by: BlitzBoy on March 30, 2004, 02:35:14 PM
Question for APEXI Power FC users

I just got mine today and very nice and shiney it it to:)
Been reading the commander manual and the section "ETC"
it mentions about the [Seq.Turbo Cont]
that enables or disables the sequential turbo control system.
The question is if I set this to disable, will the turbos work in NON sequential mode? eg both primary and secondary turbos both provide boost rather then waiting for the seconday turbo to cut in at 4500

NOOooo!! :D

The twins will only work non-seq if u mechanically make them do so!

That setting is for running a single turbo, I guess u could use this setting IF you had made the twins non-seq - but otherwise - Leave it ;)

Seeing as the same unit is used for single and twin turbo applications I would hazard a guess that this setting is to allow a single turbo setup.

edited, you beat me to it Rich :D

damn i thought that was too easy lol
So I could disable the actuator that controls the butterfly valve that open/shuts in the twinturbo pack the flow of air of the second turbo?

Ok another question guys about the ECU on section 3c of the manual "Fuel Correction Map"

when changing settings "Fuel Correction Value"
Air fuel Ratio is 12.0
Example 14.57/12.00=1.214

If I wanted to go richer then this example
say for arguments sake 11.0 fuel ratio

14.57/11=1.324
would 1.324 be the setting I would input?

BINGO!

Your method is correct

The fuel correction (INJ) map assumes that the car is fairly stock, so the actual results may differ, depending on intake, porting, exhaust mods etc.

But as a rough guide it\'s good in principal.

hee hee I see u got my message on the FDUK board Max
nice holiday I hope

So given that the stock APEXI base map is setup fairly Rich, with the mods I have it should be fairly safe I assume to run up to 13psi?
I will be getting a wide band plumbed in next month in my downpipe, how far downn the pipe should I weld the bung for the sensor?

questions question lol i luv my new toy

It\'ll spit flames at 13 psi, it throws in that much fuel ;)

Make sure you don\'t melt your bumper :rollin

I put my sensor in the midpipe, by the join to the downpipe, there\'s a nice little gap in there which makes it easy to run the wiring through the gearstick hole into the cabin.

Holiday was lovely thanks, although I did miss the smell of optimax ;)

cool I will try it tonite 13psi here I come

But i\'ve already burnt the bumper  rofl:rollin

mmmm nothing like Opitmax in the Morning lol

Have you changed any of the timing maps if so did it bring any deal of power in advancing them?

you done any porting on ur engine, as im having mine a rebuilt soon?

Timing is a bit of a funny subject at the moment, some owners are having rather a lot of success with relatively conservative timing.

I\'m going back to the rollers again soon and will experiment with a few different variations to see what works for my setup.

Different engines really do behave differently to timing adjustments, from what I\'ve seen to date.

Mine is ported, but I have toyed with mine in it\'s previous stock ported form as well.

Will you get a great benefit from advancing the timing? Probably not, but altering and/or smoothing out other indirect aspects such as split timing seems to help.

You can gain a lot of power by getting the fuelling right though. Geff\'s the man to talk to in your pursuit for more!

More questions

There are two settings for boost control of the two turbos,
how do u select the second boost settings when running?

What knock values do you see at 1 bar at WOT?
Title: APEXI Power FC ECU + Commander
Post by: maximtaylor on April 07, 2004, 11:48:14 AM
Ok, via commander, when you go into the boost screen, the cursor will be over either 1 or 2.

If you wish to run setting 2, move the cursor over this number, then press the back key to the previous menu screen. Setting 2 will now be used.

Knock value I get is around 10, but jumps on throttle lift off through noise.

ah cheers for that, hmm i wonder if there is a way of using the second setting as scramble boost.

Only 10 , my car must be noisey, I get 30 at WOT normally at 13-14 psi, I accidently set my boost at 16 for one run and got peak knock values of 70! ive heard guys on the 200sx forum getting knock values of over a 100!!

Well Ive set mine back to 13-14 now, temps seem to be in order.

What knock value do u reckon is unsafe to go past?

I ignore any value less than about half way up the line (in 4 display mode). I also ignore ALL readings when the engine is not under any boost.

However even some of the readings under boost can appear spurious sometimes, you can get a momentary blip which only occurs once in a blue moon. General noise is a problem.

I know of a few users that ignore the thing completely.

i thought my knock levels were showing high on the commander so i disconnected the water pump/power steering pump etc for a while. The knock remained the same, apparently engine mounts etc can make a difference. My engine has only covered 1500 \'running in\' miles although it is running no cats & a single turbo so maybe it\'s running a bit lean because of the breathing. Best to make sure air/fuel ratio is ok.

Post by: BlitzBoy on April 07, 2004, 01:25:23 PM
so the knock sensor is as good as a car with no wheels lol

i must be patient and wait for the wideband to arrive then.

What AFRs you guys getting at WOT?
Title: APEXI Power FC ECU + Commander
Post by: maximtaylor on April 07, 2004, 02:02:56 PM
I aim for around 11.5:1 under WOT, 11:1 through peak torque (around 5k revs until 6.5k revs)

Although I am going to remap for water injection a bit leaner.

Max,

Whilst on the subject of Apexi what typically needs to be changed via the commander to get through an MOT emissions test for later imports?   I have Feed downpipe, RB back box and stock cat.

Thanks

Kevin

Yeah you can go into a test mode and cut the fuel correction map by 25 percent, what ever you do dont drive it at that setting otherwise the engine will go boom.

Max has the proper procedure down to a tee, im sure he will post the steps to do this
Title: APEXI Power FC ECU + Commander
Post by: maximtaylor on April 07, 2004, 03:10:55 PM
Yep, that\'s pretty much it explained!

You really need the tester to allow you to sit in the car during the emissions test, so you can fine tune the fuel to pass.

I\'ve said it before, but putting the a/c on helps as well, puts just enough load/revs on the engine to pass a normal idle test, and should help on a fast idle test as well if required.

having the feline in the pipe will help no end :)

yeah grab a stray moggie and shove it up the exhaust pipe that will soak up the emissions lol :rollin

could you clarify how to reduce the emissions for mots/road side checks etc,  i have a commander but no instructions so i am not to ofay with it.
cheers

Do a search first, we have covered this subject at least twice before.

How about a sticky??

There is a pdf version of the commander manual out there somewhere as well.

If you have no joy, then let me know and I\'ll trawl it out :)

Yes Moderators make this a sticky as these question get asked quite often.
