Title: Intermitent Turbo Problems :(
Post by: CharlieP on November 19, 2008, 05:26:39 PM
Hi all.....I know there could well be quite a few different causes of turbo issues....but might there be a common one?
Some times the turbos barely boost.......sometimes they boost to around 0.5 bar......and some times they work properly!

Its a 1993, standard, with rebuilt engine about 2000miles, 3 years ago....

Any ideas? :reallymad

Pills or Solenoids.

Pills?
 Turbo specific solenoids?

Sorry bud, pill are the one-way check valves. The little white and green things in the rats nest. When working they allow air one way when they are screwed the air can get back and the system fails. Most of the solenoids are used to control the turbos and, similar to the pills, control where air flows.

If she isn\'t making boost.... or only 0.5 I would say that your problem lies with the boost controle solonoid bolted to the front of the UIM as the wastgate spring is set to 0.5 which means if this solonoid fails, you will only get 0.5 which isn\'t enough to activate the second turbo IIRC??

No need for a mechanic mate, that will cost you money!!
The controle solonoids are held on by 2 10mm bolts & there are 4 pipes to slip off & fit to the new ones. Try this first as you don\'t need to dismantel the car to get at these, but if it is in the rats nest then it\'s UIM off & some propper spannering & head scratching to get the unit out!

Yep, agree with Jono, these are easy to replace and I\'d try them first, dunno why I did not think of them before (having a blond life!)

Also check for boost leaks on the intercooler rubber couplings

a standard twin turbo\'s car will have both pills and solenoids. The pills are basically a one-way valve that fits in the line of some of the turbo control pipe work. The solenoids are a control valve that, under certain conditions, will change the path of air in the turbo control system.
