Title: HELP!!! water leak from block!!
Post by: L18M on November 15, 2008, 01:36:12 PM
Hey hey,

So a little background. did a coolant change and since then my fc keeps overheating!
checked water pump, belts etc and finally jacked the car up to look for the leak. seem the leak is coming from somewhere between the eccentric shaft and the shaft for the fan.
not enough space to poke my head in there to have a look but definitely leaking around that area. can see water dribbling out.

anyone know how to fix this or is this quite a big problem:3Confused

cheers for reading.

at the front of the engine ??

it SOUNDS like your water pump is shot and its weeping out of the bleed hole

supposed to be really hard to see it though ???

Gotta agree with Stu,

Only way you will pobably see properly is to take the pulley of and if need be use a mirror to see under the nose of the pump where you will find a small hole.

If you can see it and you have a stain line runing out from the hole, the water pump gland is dead

thanks for the replies =)
well.. can see water comming out somewhere but nt sure if its from the weep hole.. thought it might be just the gasket but... not.

so who\'s got a good condition water pump..? lol
or better to buy new?

if the water pump is shot then, it a bit strange how when i press the acc pedal can hear water swoshing waboutin the enigne bay.
i guess better to replace water pump n be safe than botch job it only for the engine to go pop!

grinder: yes its from teh front. somewhere behind the pulleys

^^^ What they said ^^^

This isn\'t too bad a job do to Liam - you might want to have a go at this yourself :)

I suggest a new water pump - they aren\'t too expensive, and get both gaskets, if you move the pump housing whilst refitting the front bit with the pump impeller the smaller gasket at the back can split.

I\'ve seen them on ebay for £60 including gaskets - but that\'s form US - so you can add another £30 to get here.

I\'d try the vendors on the site - see what they\'ve got, and then after that try Mazda themselves - they\'d not be too bad on the gaskets - not sure about the pump.  Main problem is getting the fan off, after than it\'s just 8 or 9 bolts.

if you get a new water pump and gaskets, bring it round and i will \'help you change it\' its definately gonna be the pump and its easy to do. It will cost you a small drink.  I\'m in essex, so as long as you arnt in south london, its not too far.

a lil bit of an update. after some tinkering n questioning. new pump cost 280ukp! so as mine seems to be moving still i ordered a new water pump seal n gasket n another alt belt for my twin alt pulley. parts arrive from brussels in about 5 working days.

anyone got any good ideas how to loosen the 4 nuts holding the fan in? the shaft keeps moving so kinda hard to unbolt whilst it moves. =(

also do you need ot take the fan shroud off to take the fan out?
what is the best way to put the alt belts on as its really tight fit. hav to take the alt out to squeeze the belts on.

cheers

the fan shroud - yeah that took me a while to get off - its just arkward

i took the fan off mine - just cant think how i did it though

once the shroud is off and the fan out - you will be shocked at how much space there is in there !! :D

im sure the fan on mine came off dead easy ??? only thing i can think off is to use 2 spanners - one to hold it still - the other to loosen the nuts

haha.. so is that a yes you have to take the shroud out to get the fan out?
i seen how much space there can be so though go elec fan but been told the stock fan is really gd. plus think once i get bigger tubby in then i hope i wont need to stick my head under the bonnet much *fingers crossed* but being a rotarty.. THATS NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!! =(

after a bit of wd40 n new spanners to fit.. i managed to get teh fan off but the pulley for the fwater pump wont come out unless the fan pulley is off!!! :2Mad

this means taking the shroud off and lot of other things.. me thinks this is bit bigger job than expected!!

any good mechanic down in somerset area fancy giving me a hand on a 1/4 done job??
i wont offer to buy u a drink.. bit on the cheap side.. i offer u a nice chinese take away instead :mmmm
i got new gasket and water seal n another v-belt that jus needs putting in.

cheers :wiggle

If I was closer I would mate but to be honest the shroud and fan are easy to take off, just take yer time and you will get it done.  When its time to take the pump off it might need a gentle tap with a hammer, its probably the original and never been off before.

I you weren\'t so far away I\'d offer to come over and give a hand :(

Like Peter said - take your time with it and it will come good.  Good on you for having a crack at it.

A little helpful tip if you have to take the bottom pulley off :

Mark the pulleys up in relation to each other and the crank position - the pulley at the front has some timing marks on it - it needs to go back in the same position as before - it\'s a good opportunity to add a bit of paint to those marks and make them clearer.

Mine only went back in one position - as the 4 bolt holes aren\'t symmetrical.

ok.. i gave up cos its too cold to do anything outside!!!
so took it to this nice italian mechanic who comes to parents take away.
the bottom pulley had to be taken off n he did that in a hour or so.

now the problem is (not that the pump is apart) i need to pull the shaft (where the fan is attached) out of the front of the water pump to replace the water pump seal.

anyone know where i can get this done?

(cant wait to get back into mandy!!!)
