Can anyone help please
Put my (93) fd in for an MOT the other day and it failed big time on the emissions
CO is supposed to be 3.500 but it was actually 7.739
HC is supposed to be 1200 but it was actually 2702
Everything else was fine
Any help would be much appreciated
Where are you?
why?
North of Scotland
I know a man lol. Do you have any mods? Have you changed the plugs lately as this can make a big differance.
Hmmm
Take it for a good hard run to warm the engine up nicely before the test (and get them to do the emissions test at the start, when everything is nice and warm)
New plugs
check the fuel map (if using a mappable ECU)
Check the air-pump (if you\'ve got it)
Fit a cat pipe (if running decat)
Slip the guy some $$ :Giggle
If it\'s still got an air-pump, I\'d suspect that going west could well be the culprit. Those are almost the exact same readings mine had when the airpump packed up earlier this year
how much money would i be looking at to change the tips? i\'m pretty new to the RX7
The airpump was just replaced but it was second hand so i dont know if its ok or not, i think it is...
whats the rumours going about saying i dont need to have it emissions tested?
Have you got bigger primary injectors and a decat ?
Its been decated but apart from that its pretty standard
You do need to have it emissions tested, but because of it\'s age, it\'s a pre-cat test, which is where the 110o ppm hydrocarbon and 3.5% Co levels come from. Sorry, dude. If it was a proper catalysed emissions test, you\'d never stand a cat in hell\'s chance (groan!) of getting through it.
The airpump is controlled by a driver in the ECU. Mine had burned out, which does apparently happen sometimes. You can tell if it\'s working, the electromagnetic clutch on the pump should be engaged from idle and disengage at round about 3,000 rpm.
Getting tips replaced? That\'s an engine rebuild job, assuming you\'re referring to the apex seals? Which costs a lot.....why do you think you need to change the tips?

Doh! :Hammer Well, there\'s yer problem! No point having a running airpump if there\'s no cat for it to pump air into! :)
mmm...lol let me get back to you on that, it might not be decated...
nik has hit the nail on the head there.... no cat, no function for the air pump resulting in high emissions, but your\'s shouldn\'t be put through a cat test anyway as it is pre 95, but it should go through a std emissions test at an MOT!
Jono
Sorry guys its not been decated
Aha. Check the airpump operation, then. Like I said, it should be spinning from idle up to round about 3,000 rpm
Ok mate i\'ll go check that and get back to you, cheers
Did they run a cat test? What year is your FD? If it\'s older than July 95 then you can request an non cat test, it should pass on that.
On a side note the usual tipping rate for emissions is £5-£10.
I\'ve only ever had one MOT tester be a d*ck with me when we first started our import business up over a decade ago, but I took comfort in the fact that i\'d done his wife on many occasions. I dont use that MOT tester anymore, or even his wife now. :D
Haha, good response! "You may have failed my RX-7, but I\'ve failed your missus" :Giggle
The 1200ppm HC and 3.5% vol CO levels are the non-cat test, though, dude. A Rex with a cat and working airpump should sail through that unless there\'s some other problem meaning its emissions are sky-high
maybe fit 2 more airpumps, you can get airpumps for free and you just need a bigger belt and someone who can fabricate custom parts for you. YES IM TALKING CRAP

.........and my rx7 looks, handles and performs better. :Ladys-man

Your absolutely right mate, that\'ll teach me to actually read the thread before I post. :Hammer
Mike: If airpumps operating properly give the car a service with new plugs and run some cataclean through it. If it still fails on that maybe something a little more expensive (goosed cat, lambda sensor on its way out etc).
Anyone got a link to the relevant site or page that shows the MOT guy what he should be testing for on a pre 95 import?

Check this link out think it should help link thing (http://www.ukmot.com/6-4.asp) :Thumbsup!
Have also found this which might help some people :Thumbsup!

Thanks for that but it says:
"The vehicle will be tested according to its age from first use. The only exemption to this is if the vehicle owner can present to the tester at the time of test a letter from the vehicle manufacturer stating that that particular engine as originally installed could not meet the equivalent British emission standards. If this is the case, then test to the next lower emission standard.
eg. A 1995 car first used in Africa has a letter from the engine manufacturer stating that the particular engine (engine number to be stated) cannot meet catalyst emission limits, then use the pre cat limits of CO 3.5%, HC 1200ppm."
Ah sorry didn\'t read your 2nd post with the pdf
Doesn\'t that mean theat every one should have one of these letters from Mazda? It doesn\'t say anything about the pre 1995 rule for imports etc...
According to that flow chart, which seems a lot more streamlined than the marathon in the first link, it would appear that Rexes fall into the pre-cat test because of there not being an equivalent model homologated for the UK market, if I\'m reading it right? The UK model had an extra catalyser, and all sorts of spurious emissions b0ll0cks cobbled on, so presumably it\'s report wouldn\'t be able to be applied to import models? Or am I reading that wrong?
I think if you take your reg docs with you it has the first use on it mine has 1992 first reg 2005 in the uk so I think that should be ok. As for the letter from mazda not sure on that as its the first time i heard about on that site????

Correct, there was no exact UK equivalent therefore it\'s a non cat test. :chat
