i have only just thought of this...to be honest i havnt thought much about it apart from it would be nice lol.
i guess the engine bay on the mx5 would be to small?
but i thought as im on this forum i might aswell ask.
does anyone think its possible to get the rx7 engine into the mx5?
the 1.3turbo one?
without a stupid amount of hassle?
thankyou :)
Well I\'ve seen the LS1 5.7L V8 in mx5\'s so I would think there is enough room.
damm!!! that must have been a huge job.
Quote from: Tomcat;553297damm!!! that must have been a huge job.
There is at least one company in the US doing a kit for it, or at least there was.
Here you go:

any idea on the cost?
i wouldnt do it because thats just crazy just interested really
I\'ve seen vids of this, black mx-5 with stoopidly huge rear tires, wheel spinning all over the place. Looked and sounded mental.

This is one I\'ve just found but there are others.

Ive seen a vid of a black MX5 with bright orange rims running an RX7 lump overseas, so its possible :)
Chris
damm!!! must look away! lol.
cheers d2bba, now to find someone who knows how to so i can get rough cost :D
cheers aj.

thanks mate ill search for him now, hopefully i can pm now.
aj
i still cant pm :(
if someone could pm him the link to this post please it would be greatfully aprciated.

13B REW engine in a 5 is definatley doable.... there was one in Oz that had one done & was pushing 320bhp @ the hubs!!! was in a mag a few years ago.
Jono
I\'m sure someone up in the Woking area was working on one
Kash,
That sure is a good looking five... could feature in Knight Rider.
Jono FD3 is right, there is one in OZ... albeit a 13b but not a twin-turbo...
http://www.fastlane.com.au/Custom_Shed/MX5_rotary.htm
With pictures of the engine and everything ;)
The well known bunch of nutters :Hammer in the US, Monster Motorsports, have been responsilble for V8-ing a load of Miatas (US MX-5s :) )
Check out this video, including craning the V8 into the MX-5 engine bay :)

if you can fit a 13b turbo in a kit car (which you can) then it will definately fit in a MX5! I like the 5\'s but they are a bit heavy for me :)
BTW, no difference in size between 13b turbo and a twin turbo block, they are virtually identicle
It does fit, But i\'m afraid you have to move the steering rack.
there was one with a lexus v8 in it in aus that was very nice and it suited the car as not to much power!! and they are cheap and very reliable.
It\'s certainly do-able. The Mk 3 MX5 has a modified RX8 chassis and the RX8 R3 has a six speed MX5 gearbox. So getting the two to mate up wouldn\'t be hard. You could get inventive with the position of the turbo too and get a crazy huge one in! Plenty of poke!
thanks alot everyone for all the info.
wow them cars are tasty!!!
this is not good, i can see me buying another car as a run around and having two projects now :S
id love that kind of power the in 5 :3gears-rh
Wanna buy an MX-5 ???? :-)
13B conversion has been done quiet a few time in Japan and America. Sounds like quiet an interesting conversion!
Would be well cool !!
Here\'s a sick little idea! Westfield do a kit that basically builds a seven-a-like using a Mk 1 MX-5 as a base. Build the kit and replace the MX5 motor with a Big Turbo Rotary. Have the turbo hanging out the side for cooling, crank up the power to about 400bhp and scare yourselves silly.
i like that idea, how about using a westfield chasis with a more aerodynamic body :)
Like yours eh? :)
its like a different car now!, you probably wouldnt recognise it since north weald. It may be at rockingham tomorrow if i\'m lucky :yes:yes
Start a thread and get some pics up that man!
Does it now go in one direction at a time. At North Weald it seemed to manage several directions all at the same time! Looked awesome fun though!
now thats just unpractical lol.
think ill have to contact a few companys and see if anyone would take the job on.
dont think ill be able to afford it untill mid next year but i def want to get a decent engine in there :d
aj
give us a call we can do it 07950399080 craig,
hey mate thanks for the post sorry i have only just seen it, i have found someone to do the work now.
thanks once again though.
aj.
First the rumor,
When the first gen MX-5 came out apparently Mazda believed it would not be possible to physically fit a Rotary into an MX-5, apparently 2 months on the Australians did it !,
Secondly the fact,
I was told by word of mouth from Mazda that but for the swipe of a pen the latest generation MX-5 very nearly went into production with a Rotary, it was only in the last stages of evaluation that a boinger was chosen again.
One of the MX-5 club committee drove one of these fully functional MX-5/ RX-8 engined "hybrids" out in Germany and told me that it was a hugely impressive machine :Santa
Probably loads out there if you do a search but here\'s one for you,

thanks for your info mate and cheers for the link :D
aj
I reckon the best conversion you could do is an RX8 engine.
The RX8 engine has two major advantages, one is the sump is very shallow so the engine can sit low enough, and the other is the exhaust manifold area in the engine bay is very tight on the MX5 but the RX8 exhaust manifold can be very compact so would fit well.
Also the engine could be put onto a Weber IDA carb, which would sound great and produce at least 200 free revving N/A HP with a 9000rpm red line.
Sounds like a great combo to me.
An RX8 gearbox would also work very well and can be adapted into the MX5 power plant frame.
This is one project that we will be doing sometime in the near future for ourselves.
I am on the lookout for a cheap second gen MX5 if anyone has one!
Regards
Carl
Mmm, 200 bhp isnt enough for me!. May as well tune the standard engine to reach that. I would want about 300bhp from a rotary in an mx5
cheers for the info carl, im with robbie on this one also though, im going for 350bhp so the rx7 engine should get me there nicely :D
theres a few cheap mx5\'s on here:
http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/
good luck.
aj
200hp from an RX8 engine would be way quicker than tuning the original piston lump.
But turbo charged FD/FC lump is not a straight forward job, room is tight and also height of engine centerline is another area to be careful of.
Look forward to seeing what you do.
If you need any help, give me a buzz.
Regards
Carl
Pettit Racing had one in their old showroom in Florida, with a flared arch kit.
It looked amazing and Cam said it went like a bat out of hell....
He also said it was no piece of cake getting everything in though!
Some Pics and Info (http://pettitracing.fatcow.com/car_sale/mx5gallery.htm)
I think what Carl said is right about an RX8 engine, and also I think its a shame that for the 40th anniversary rotary, they didn\'t make a lame RX8, they should have made a rotary MX5. It would have sold out in 1 second.
thanks carl i will do that :)
and thanks again for the info.
thanks california styl i will read up on that now, car looks nice :D
never know it might help with my install.
willl certainly help me know what parts i need to get together for the install.
i have found an engine and im just in talks with the guys as we speak about it so fingers crossed will have that by mid jan.
so the install should start early feb :D
will keep you all posted.
thanks aj.

HI Carl,
I have one of those and you can practice on mine if you like !!

ive seen a 550hp cosworth engine in a westfield before. it span all the way through the gears to an 11.1 quarter. still spinning over the line. too much power i think

I got a westie with a blade engine in - 0-60 in 4 seconds and its only 130bhp :Giggle. 200bhp in a Westie would be ace.
There are loads of room in the arches for really wide wheels with sticky rubber :Giggle
nice mate i bet thats fun :D

cossie is not the best engine for a light car like a kit car, it has a really peaky power band and running that sort of power its running about 2 bar of boost and comes in like a kick in the nuts.
you dont see too many 550 bhp cossy engines, he must have thrown some money at it.
11.1 is still very impressive! what was his terminal?
