maybe it was the actual car i drove but my experience was as follows, btw i\'d be happy for anyone to put me straight as i love the look of the cars.
firstly everything rattled and huge knocking when going over uneven ground, wasnt overly quick (at least not as quick as i thought it would be) it had a rebuilt engine so wasnt knackered, and my daily driver is an E90 BMW 330i so i am used to a reasonably quick car to begin with.
didnt get any idea of ther handling as i only drove it on a dual carriage way and a roundabout and back up the other way,
didnt like the way it looked, it had non pop up headlights, tiny wing mirrors and a fast and the furious style rear spoiler ( not my idea of nice), it was also in red which i think is not the best colour.
(also i dont mean to offend anyone that has a red one or anything that i have mentioned on their car)
i would like a Lotus elise/exige (with a honda engne - good for 0-60 in just over 4 secs) or RX7 so i want it to handle very well, i love the idea of a turbo\'d car to get more power easier and the looks of the std (with subtle work) RX7 is amazing
Did i just try a crap one or have i describe the ownership experiences of an RX7, honesty would really be appreciated here.
Thanks
Hmmm - sounds like it has been fairly modified - and needs a set of new bushes / pillow balls (clinking from the rear). Given the suspension sounds a bit old, changes are it wouldn\'t handle too well either.
Mine\'s pretty stock in the engine bay, and i find it has quite a lot of pull, but you have to get the revs up, so that the turbo\'s engage. Also, whilst it may be been rebuilt (so fewer eingine *block* worries) that doesn\'t mean that the Rats Nest is going to be perfect, or that the turbos are fine - either of which can gut the performance...
I\'d suggest taking a couple more for a spin, try out a few of them.
Quotedidnt like the way it looked, it had non pop up headlights, tiny wing mirrors and a fast and the furious style rear spoiler ( not my idea of nice), it was also in red which i think is not the best colour.
I can\'t see why you went to test drive a car with so many things you didn\'t like to begin with.
Was it highly modified?
I\'d find another one that looks right and try that.
Never driven a 330i but you should be able to find comparison figures somewhere.
There aren\'t many who drive an RX and don\'t rate them.
John
I\'m in love with mine.....well...you know what I mean!
Maybe that\'s why I\'ve got two on the drive! :D
I think to realise the real handling ability, you need one thats set-up as it should be...ie. good tyres, sus (rubber mounts, bushes etc)
For example, I noticed a huge difference going down to 17inch wheels from 18s!

didnt really have the intention of buying this one as he wanted £9k, (he was a trader)
he couldnt tell me if the power had been upped.... AFAIK it had a turbo timer only, so the general opinion other than drive others which i will do is that they are good handling cars, would they get close to Elise/Exige handling with the correct suspension mods, money no object as the RX7 would be cheaper to buy than an Elsie and pay 10k for the honda engine conversion
Not much low down torque from rotary engines. And certainly not as much as you\'d get from a German straight six 3.0ltr afair. That might have put you off?
Honda VTEC engines dont have a lot of torque low down either, but in something as light as an elise you prob wouldnt notice it that much.
Just try a few more and if its not for you then its not for you.
try a few others as it sounds like you drove a bad example?
there are alot of bad examples about especially twin turbos with boost issues, you really wanan get one that has been well looked after and for 9k you could get a very good one, uprated to single turbo etc
Some time ago i found myself right up behind an Elise, just before a motorway, he floored it so did i, and i pretty much stayed with him up to 90, it was raining i had to back off and my alloy wipers started to lift! but thats no excuse i think he would have left my standard FD anyway, but they are so small, i\'d hate to be in one of them for such a small speed advantage,
Sounds to me as though the one you drove may have needed suspension set up properly, i noticed a huge difference when mine was done, like the guys said try a few, when they are right they are stunning cars to drive, and i am very old, but love chasing bikes!
Good luck hope you find a good one

Sorry should have said-
Well I found the ride much more forgiving (larger tyre wall) and seemed to handle better!
Oh and after having the tracking aligned made it even better!
ps. one of my RXs might be for sale!
My front and rear suspension is out after a crash (just got it back on the road), It handles that bad i wouldn\'t give anyone else a shot. Before the crash it was truly awsome. All bent stuff replaced just needs aligned. Try another I would say.
Phil
Fell in love with mine as soon as I drove it, had to have it.
Shame the engine popped but hey, onwards and upwards. Sounds like you drove a bad example. I\'d personally never change the lines of the car too much, even down to keeping the popups - I think they\'re a piece of motoring nostalgia, and it\'s nice to give the finger to the Health and Safety people as well as the Greenies when you go stonking by with your giant carbon footprint. :D
I was under the impression that the RX-7 was one of best handling RWD cars to come out of Japan? Can\'t remember where its from, but I can only really think of a few others that come close (e.g. NSX, but I guess thats really a supercar?)
Definately get the bushes and pillowballs replaced if you hear knocking, and I wouldnt be suprised if its not running full boost either if it felt sluggish, mine had both of these problems when I bought it.
Try to view a single turbo rx7 with decent upgrades to go with the turbo,
you\'ll find it much quicker than the one you drove which sounds quite standard tbh, the exterior is another story really :King
The single turbo rx i had was running a T78 turbo and nothing on the road touched it in the time i had it, had a quick play with a new M3 at the time, nearly hit the back of the M3 it was that slow :Laugh
I think you have just drove a dog mate tbh so try a few more.
I looked and tried out about 9 rx7 before i settled on the one i got, The ride is excellent and very quiet with exception to the blitz nurspec and de-cat.It is also standard trim as i personally prefer the way Mr Mazda intended.
Also my car is only very lightly tuned, Full exhaust/intake and powerfc mapped by pip and in my experience of other performance cars including exige\'s and vx220 turbo\'s my fd more than holds its own.
Ok so round silverstone i would struggle to keep with both the above due to size and weight but as far as duel carriages as you mentioned i always start pulling away in 4th. Do remember the FD itself only weighs the same as an ep3 ctr so with 300+hp and 290lb/ft believe me its no slouch.
Also as far as lowdown torque figures go my car made 290lb/ft on pips dynapac which is a hell of a lot since i previously owned a honda:Giggle
If its more speed your after spend your hard earned on a single turbo rx7
my preference would personally be a t51KAI but even a t78/t88 would be good for 500+ bhp and then your pretty much whipping anything else on the road.
Does sound like you drove a dog ! I played with an exige at Oulton park about a year ago and he ended up moving over to let me past in the dry :D
There are plenty of mods you can do to these cars to make them corner even better !
The FD can be deceiving at just how quick it is. My Single setup is a quick car but its so smooth you don\'t really notice bar from the speedo !

Having done a fair few trackdays, which usually have a fair few Elises and Exiges, I can say that you will need well over 300bhp to keep up with a standard Exige - I\'ve got 310bhp and you can\'t really catch up with them. Elises are a different matter - I haven\'t had one I didn\'t shoot past on the straights, although I know there are very quick ones out there - standard though, they\'re not an issue.
What is an issue is the cornering - you\'ll struggle to keep an RX-7 in touch with something so light and stiff round tighter corners, although instructors and mechanics have been full of praise for the handling of mine (it has coilovers and had a full geometry setup at Center Gravity). It is certainly better round corners than other cars of similar size/power (Skylines, most Imprezas, BMWs etc.), but when you shed 500kg as in a Lotus, you\'ll need a very stiff and sticky RX-7 to keep it honest!
Speaking of BMWs, mine doesn\'t usually lose more than a car length or so to the latest M3s on the straights and is definitely quicker than E36s.
I couldn\'t decide between an RX7 or a Honda Elise either which I why I currently have both! Very different cars and really depends on what your after also think about what type of driving you do, if you do a lot of twisty B roads the Lotus is in heaven but on the motorway it can get pretty tiring as it\'s a fair bit noisier than the rx7 at speed.
Handling wise the Lotus is a bit more forgiving if your not that great a driver you get so much feedback on what the wheels are doing and the Honda power delivery is very smooth and progressive, the RX7 tends to "feel" quicker with the turbo delivery but it\'s easier to loose traction at the back, having said that my elise is n/a go for supercharged 320bhp and I doubt anything will feel faster. Best bet is speak to one of the conversion companies and get a test drive and see which you prefer.
also if your worried about rattles don\'t buy a Lotus!
I must say I am definitely of the impression that my next car will be an Exige - and that was before this month\'s Evo mag! ;)
I love the FD and have a DC5 Honda Integra Type-R (so essentially the same engine as the Honda conversions, only a bit better than if you have the K20 out of a Civic) and so I kind of have bits of my ideal car spread across two! I miss the responsiveness of the N/A Honda in the FD and I miss the RWD and torque grunt when in the DC5. Both cars handle about the same (i.e. exceptionally well), although you\'d have to say the FD edges it if you have the driving ability to use RWD to its potential (which I currently don\'t!)
So, take the N/A responsiveness, add to RWD and shed a load of weight to negate the loss of torque/power and throw in even better handling and what do you get? An Exige! I must say this is with track in mind though, I wouldn\'t have an Exige as my only car. And I think I\'d want the supercharger to make sure you have the full benefit when dragging down the straights against bigger engined cars, but whether that loses some of the responsiveness I don\'t know.
Quote from: jasonw;552704So the general opinion other than drive others which i will do is that they are good handling cars, would they get close to Elise/Exige handling with the correct suspension mods, money no object as the RX7 would be cheaper to buy than an Elsie and pay 10k for the honda engine conversion
I used to own a S1 Exige and recently the RX7 and handling wise they have a similar "feel", the RX7 probably a little less edgy (but the Exige is more edgy than the Elise), but you
can feel the weight... I\'d say it\'s like a heavy Elise in a way.
But then you get a stereo you can hear, Air Con, powered stuff, wheel bearings that last longer than 10,000 miles etc... So in a sense I\'d say you\'re trying to compare apples to oranges, the RX7 does handly very well, but due to weight it\'ll never be the same as the Elise / Exige IMHO.
My elise is n/a but I have driven a honda supercharged one and it still has the responsiveness, it\'s a pretty awesome car tbh. Totally agree about having an ideal car spread across two but I quite like the change from switching between one and the other and the way the two cars are different, bit of a luxury I suppose. I think the supercharged elise/exige would give you the best of both worlds, but I\'m not sure if I could live with the extra noise of the supercharger everyday especially in an S1 exige, S2 is not so bad.
I have owned a Lotus in one form or another since 1975 and recently did a track day with an Elise about a month after I took my RX7 down to Re-Worx and had them replace 2 toelink bushes, install new Tein suspension along with the Polybush replacement all round, as soon as I picked the car up and drove it less than a hundred yards I thought the feel/feedback was so similar to the Elise. It\'s as well to remember that the RX7 is getting on a bit now and if these things have not been done your into the worn stylus syndrome (thats for those who may remember vinyl) with these cars.
my 330 hp rx made mince meat of a tuned elise not sure how but it was loud. i was doing 40 he over took about 60ish once id got into the boost i was alongside him before he knew it. id love to try on an exige.
In a straight line you shouldn\'t have a problem, but that\'s boring, how it handles the twisties either on track or back road is what seperates a great car from just a good one..
Well i just moved from Elise to RX nearly 3 month ago and im completely sold on the RX pretty much all the way.
Although the Elise probably does have a more \'fun\' aspect to it i just prefer the RX, i think it has more road presence and even more rare than seeing an Elise. (Mind i do miss flashing other lotus driver\'s, im yet to see another RX on the road up here!!)
I just found the Elise ate into my pocket and p!ssed me right off when it lashed down, im not even a fan of comfort but when the rain sprays in round every corner and the doors wells fill up it gets old after a year.
Don\'t get me wrong though i loved owning it but i bought the first RX i saw and am 2000 miles down the road problem free, i\'d have Jeurgen to thank for that but its a ton less than the lotus was!!
Rambling on but point im trying to make is totally different cars, different styles and is pretty much down to you what style you prefer
i think im right in thinking the RX was based on the Elan 2+2 which is quiet interesting

You never really know what you\'re up against unless you ask though do you? An S1 178bhp Exige might not be much trouble, a supercharged K20 running 300bhp would be a bit trickier!
Same with Elises - like a lot of cars, people put louder exhausts on, but they don\'t make much difference to power without mods elsewhere. There\'s loads of Elise variants too, from 111bhp to 190bhp from the factory, never mind the conversions, supercharged versions and general tuning that goes on. Virtually impossible to tell what\'s what without looking under the cover.
Yeah true, although you can hear a Honda conversion from an absolute mile off!! Need a good 7" backbox fabricated to get them anywhere near normal road use.
(I only know because I know someone who has one and had loads of difficulty getting it onto tracks with noise limits)

yeah one sort of happens every 3 month or so.. but a few people s cars are off road at the moment lol!
thanks for all the replies, i was out testing cars the other week, and they were, S1 Exige, S2 (NA) Exige, honda S2 Elise(NA), and the what seems to be a dog of an RX7, what i want from the car is it to be very quick and handle well - without massive running costs, it will be a second car, and for the cost of an Elise (honda\'d) i could get a very nice RX7 or preferably a std RX7 that i can improve over time -i.e when the engine pops, ill go out testing again soon
Hey Jason, I have a standard one for sale. I am in Surrey , where are you?
Quote from: jasonw;553374what i want from the car is it to be very quick and handle well - without massive running costs
...........and your after an RX7??....... lol :Giggle
On a completely unrelated note *shameless plug* I also have for sale a fairly standard rx7 with street port and 1500 miles on WGT engine....
The Elises are all over any Rx7 in the tight twisties no matter what has been done to the Rex. If anything a very powerful Rex is often slower through tight twisties with anything but a good driver as it needs to be drove a lot more carefully and the wheels will be spinning a lot. On the other hand the Rex will annihilate the Elise on any straight and most bigger corners. Its a lot harder to be a hooligan in the Elise when its dry as they are so grippy and spin with less warning.
The other thing is that coming from a straight 6 bimmer you are used to having low down torque and not needing to keep the engine in higher rpm. A Rex should always be drove around 5k rpm or more to get the best out of the engine. Rexs only get big power BHP graphs because they Rev so high. If you limit them to the same Revs as other cars then they often have a lot less power. Once you learn how best to drive the Rex it really rewards you. The feeling, sound and response of a high reving rotary gives a buzz that no other car can give!
Quote from: jasonw;553374without massive running costs
Thats not going to be a FD3s RX7 then :rollin
Got to remember most of the FDs out there are well over 15 years old and a lot of stuff needs replacing now eg suspension, bushes, wiring etc etc, most of the other cars you quote are a lot younger and therefore their running costs are a lot lower
how much is it going to cost to run, even if i have to change all suspension parts, brakes and engine mods it must still be cheaper than buying an elise then honda conv and suspension/brakes to cope which all in would be 20-25k
what sort of running costs are you guys seeing, i am aware of 3k oil changes
It\'s all the things that could go wrong mate, from little niggles (also common on a Lotus I believe!) to a full engine rebuild that is at some point inevitable (albeit maybe not as regular as some would have you believe). As said, the age of the cars mean that annoying things can go wrong - for instance, my central locking is currently kaput. Then things like hoses, wiring, bearings etc. can cause irritation too, whilst there are turbos with a complex system to go wrong (that can also kill your engine), the interior can get scruffy (as on any older car), etc. etc.
The MPG is also horrendous - I see well under 10mpg on track, and that\'s with a mild tune (310bhp on stock twins at standard boost).
I\'m not trying to put you off, these are fantastic cars and extremely rewarding to drive, but I wouldn\'t want anyone to go into ownership thinking that a couple of extra oil changes and a few more trips to the petrol station are all that\'s involved, because there\'s nothing worse than owning a car you love that you can\'t afford to drive or end up resenting because it keeps throwing up new bills.
whats the last few bills you have seen then
btw your avatar looks cool, nice car
Cheers mate.
I\'ve been lucky (so far!) - I bought the car from Pete Taylor on here, who had looked after it well and laid the best part of £5k on an engine rebuild less than 1000 miles previously. He was also meticulous in his general preparation of the car and pretty much everything was recently tested, serviced etc. Bushes have been done, it\'s running on pretty new HKS Hipermax II dampers, resprayed, even new(ish) tyres were on when I bought it!
I did pay top price for a car of my spec (£8500 in June last year), but to be honest it has proven worth it as I hoped, as I haven\'t yet had any nasties. Don\'t get me wrong, it\'s not perfect, but it is 16 years old!
So, although I haven\'t had any big repair bills, I know there were some previously and I know that if something nasty crops up, it could cost bigtime (which is the same for any performance car, in fairness). The money I\'ve spent has been mainly on mods and setup (a new downpipe and mapping, full geometry setup, water injection to keep intake temps down, little things like a steering wheel, gauges, oil catch tank etc.)
The one fairly large thing I did have to shell out on was brakes - some grooved/drilled discs were on and I fitted Mintex pads, which cracked the discs on track and got so hot the calipers didn\'t look too clever. I ended up getting some secondhand calipers, another pair of new front pads and new discs, costing about £500 all in (fitted myself).
Hope that gives you some idea - if you pick a good one, you can get away with it like I have (up to this point! Another trackday on Saturday....), but you\'ll have to select carefully and probably pay a reasonable amount and even then there\'s no guarantee! I would always go for one with a recent rebuild, preferably still under warranty from a reputable builder (Hayward\'s is good as it lasts for two years and includes track use).
Quote from: royal;553492The feeling, sound and response of a high reving rotary gives a buzz that no other car can give!
You mean the one that comes on when you hit 8k? :Giggle
I don\'t know how much you are considering spending but this has to be about the best FD in the country just now. Its not cheap but it looks incredible and probably has had double the wanting price spent in bits.

thats for sale on pistonheads for £14k, killer car like!
You got a link? I\'m pretty certain it used to be 18k on piston heads as well? I\'ll let Gary know so he can update his site.
yeah it did usd to be up for 18k,
here you go :)
http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/730969.htm
Just as a note, the S1 Exige with the Rover K-Series VHPD engine is services every 6k miles, and is generally regarding to need a rebuild every 40,000 miles or so depending on usage.
So the RX7 can be seen as much more reliable ;)
Yeah, I prefer the S1 in terms of looks (and it\'s lighter), but I couldn\'t live with the K-series, hence the need for a Honda conversion!
Gorgeous race-ready one on Pistonheads for £24k. If only... :(
If you want the Buzz of the Rotary Engine, nifty handling but less likelihood of expensive bills why not try an RX-8. Not quite got the power of the RX7 and hasn\'t got the straightline speed but handles beautifully and revs to 9000rpm. It\'s also a 4 seater with a decent boot, standard Bose sound system and climate control. They are dirt cheap at the moment with plenty around well under £9k! I\'ve put 43,000 miles on mine in 2 years, including 5 trackdays and high speed cross continent thrashes and it\'s not let me down yet, infact other than the 12,500 mile servicing and the brakes upgrading (Hawk Pads, Grooved discs and Stainless Steel Brake lines) the only time it\'s been back to the dealer was to have a couple of areas of slightly bubbling paint looked at which were sorted by the Mazda Dealer. In day to day use it even gets 25 mpg! As for trackday pace, I\'m no Fangio but at Donington Park last weekend I was no slower than the kit car brigade without much effort.
i guess as long as the bills are not £1000\'s every month or two i could live with bills of 200/300 month(averaged out)
as for the RX8, i prefer the looks of the RX7 and they are far less common, i guess thats because they have mostly all broken down and are in the garage
and 14k is outa my league for now, thats another reason why a cheaper 7 suits as i can get the car sooner and spend on it as i go, if i had 14k i\'d continue to save and get a honda\'d S1 exige as that ticks all the boxes
I doubt you\'ll ever find an RX7 owner with everything working for long !!!! Can only echo the comments that most cars are 12 plus years old and things go. At the moment my gearbox is going and the radio only plays one side lol !!!
Superb cars when running well but they certainly are thirsty !! You\'ll never get the best out of it on the road, the track is where the car shines !!!
If you were not impressed buy the tripple rotary up for sale ?
600bhp @ 0.85bar :god:god:2eek:eek:
Don\'t know if I\'m thinking out of the box here.... but could be interesting ;)
Why not buy an elise with a blown engine (lets face it..... they are K-Series so they are going to be about!) and drop a nice little light weight 13b REW twin turbo lump in there :) handeling of an elise with the get up & go of a FD on steroids!!
best of both worlds, & would sound epick through a short exhaust system!
Jono
Eliseseses (wot\'s the plural of Elise, then?) aren\'t anywhere near as nice lookin as an FD, though. Plus they\'re the most horribly cramped interior, impossible to get in and out of, and finished with raw FRP and chicken wire everywhere. So it\'s a good idea, Jono, but you may get excellent handling and a great engine that way, but it\'ll still look like a badly-finished baboon\'s bum! :D
Also the 13B REW is heavier (esp with turbo\'s and such like attached) than the humble K series, all ali block and head with liners while the 13B still has cast iron lumps on it.
Plus you\'d then have to fabricate everything up which would cost a bomb, so just stick with the Honda K20 engine and if you need more power then get a SC on it!
But Nik is right, the S1 Elise / Exige are pretty basic, the S2\'s are a lot better all round TBH.
Quote from: Nik da Greek;554397you may get excellent handling and a great engine that way, but it\'ll still look like a badly-finished baboon\'s bum! :D

if it was going to be the S1 elise then i\'d put an exige/elise motorsport bodywork on it, but the honda\'d elise i drove was an S2 - it was awesome and still NA, supercharged would be immense, the only reason (as i think i may of stated but cant be arsed to recheck) to get a Rex (other than the way they look) is because its much cheaper to buy than a decent elise with a honda engine or have the £11k conversion done
i am torn, also as stated i need to drive more RX7\'s to compare properly as to date i have driven what seems to be a dog and i am comparing it with decent Lotus\'
I owned a TVR Cebera 4.2 V8... was awesome in a straight line - crap in the twistys.
I moved to a K-Series Series 2 Lotus Elise 111s - great in the twistys - but no grunt.
I now own a Single Turbo FD3 - great in the twistys - serious punch in a straight line.
I was on course to get another TVR but after test driving a single turbo FD3 I knew that I had to have one.... plus dont be fooled that an Elise can be maintained cheaply - they are known to have many common failures....
If you are ever near Bristol - come and try a decent, well setup RX7..

Fast and loud are good, can\'t say much on the baboons bum as I\'ve never had one :P
I get the impression the Audi conversion is what you want to be looking at over the Honda conversion on an elise.
