Title: windscreen wipers
Post by: catboy on March 06, 2003, 01:28:04 PM
my \'89 turbo 2 has a bit of a windscreen wiper issue!...
it doesnt park the windscreen wipers when you turn them off, and the intermittent doesnt work on the front. the rear wiper doesnt work at-all!...

I am thinking the intermittent/park thing might be interlinked, as when you switch onto intermittent the wipers move a short distance (as if they get a pulse of current) and then stop....

does anyone know where I should start looking for a fix, or what it might be?...   Im not very familiar with the park system on windscreen wipers; never had this problem before

thanks in advance for your help

hi, i read something on an american forum about there being a common problem with the wiper switch. this was to do with it parking properly.

Mine went the same afew years ago but was done on warrenty.
If it is the cluster switch I belive its the very small OMRON relay inside the switch cluster.
You  can get it all apart though its not easy (took me a couple of hours) and prob. wont be able to get the relay?
2nd hand from RX motors maybe (complete)
or rebuilt in US by post  (p/x)
New Mazda about £150?

U think thats bad? When I was running my first EGi, after the engine upgrade it used to shed wipers! They\'d just break off and dissapear into the distance....

My wipers have just started doing this. Is it a tricky job on a 3rd gen, or am i best of getting the whole switch cluster?

The way I solved it on my EGI was to alter the mounting method.  On the standard arm the wiper blade/halder is on a plastic lip which slides onto the arm and hangs over the edge. It is this  piece which tends to fatigue, leading to the wiper vanishing off into oblivion. (Or in my case into the BMW behind)

My advice is to remove the plastic part off of the wiper arms and retro fit a \'straight\' adaptor so that the wiper hangs off the front of the arm, that way the force of the spring is acting along the arm and straight down on to the windscreen, not onto a 2mm peice of plastic.
You may have to shop around for an adaptor that will fit, and you may have to do some hybrid bastardisation to make it work but its worth it. (Note you may have to adjust the angle of the swept area so that your wipers dont over-run)

 Hope this helps!
