Title: Rebuild time with some porting!
Post by: Fats on October 30, 2008, 07:41:02 PM
Right then, I\'ve decided to pull the engine and strip her to bits over the winter months, not just because i\'ve got nothing else to do but do fancy a refresh.

The rex has been running for a few months now with the single tub sweet as a nut and still is, but when I had a compression test before it was mapped the front rotor showed 6.9 rear 7.5, carl said there was nothing to worry about but i don\'t fancy killing her and costing a fortune in rebuild cost\'s if it does go bang.

Is it worth me buying some templates and having a go porting or send it to carl and let a pro sort it, And whats the general price on a rebuilt kit if theres such a thing..

Andy

Porting costs about £400, it might be best for a pro to do it as if you mess it up then its not good and u will need new parts lol

You can get a full rebuild kit from atkins rotary in the US for about £550 which is what I\'ll be using.

I\'m in exactly the same position as you mate albeit mine are still twins and will be having a streetport too.... Templates are available from net but i\'ll be sending mine off, better to be safe i reckon.

Just looking to do a refresh and wanted to do it while the engine was fine, so whipped it out last night :D

I\'ve emailed Pineapple racing as want the heavy duty water seals, and everything else is Mazda OEM which i\'d prefer unless anyone has any proof that something else would be better ?

Just wondering if anyone else do rebuild kits over here ??

I think its a combination of both or you can select your own parts. I looked on there my self and I\'m interested in their heavy duty water seals as well as their street port templates. The ceramic Apex seals are tempting but for an extra $1560 it will take some serious thinking.

My water seals gone on Friday or at least that what the symptoms look like. Continues coolant loss over 3 days, then lost rear rotor on Friday. Hardly done 2000 miles after single turbo conversion and running 1 bar of boost. Engine only had like 36,000 on it, what a shame...

Want to rebuild this thing to handle more power and last longer.
