First off im not sure if this is in the right place but sorry if it isnt  I currently own a 200sx s14a.. and am lookin at pxing for a gen 3 rx7.. thing is ive had a lot of biased advice.. saying they flood all the time, lose compression sometimes if left idling.. need rebuilds all the time.. seals break if you drive like a granny but also if you drive to hard.. as you can tell.. however my next door neighbour used to have one and rebuilt it to be honest i never saw him having any problems.. shaf on here who i also know tells me good things about them. :) so just wandering on how people view them (honestly) lol

sorry about the big long blog. Also i know this is a rotary forum but just want a honest review :)

Thanks and HI! :D :WaveBye

Hi went through the same thoughts when i changed from an EVO, two and a half years later not a hicup.Best bet is get one from here so you can read the history behind it (as i did) get a compression test, preferably get a car  with a rebuild that has some warranty with it then enjoy

Treat them as you would any high performance exotica - they need TLC and should always be treated with respect.  If they dont\'s get the right treatment they will bite you in the wallet :)

you can drive an rx daily, depends on how modified it is as to how much it will cost you in fuel though! I don\'t use mine daily as it is too loud and WAY too thirsty, but I have a huge bridgeport :)

Before, when it had less extreme porting and a stock turbo I used it daily, with no problems.

If you are concerned about fuel economy you have to think long and hard about an RX in stock form an FD should give you somewhere in the 18-21mpg combined but driven hard you will see nearer 11mpg! Mod obviously affect those figures.

The car you have posted the link to is known on here, it is a good car with a well thought out build, the engine was very recently rebuilt and if memory serves the turbo is new as well.

lmao ye just to many people give them bad reputations saying there very very very tempramental and high maintanace which to be honest is the only thing putting me off. and hmmm some very good info in the above thread :) but im not mega fussed about fuel as long as driven like a granny it get above around 10mpg.. TRUCK MPG FTW :D lol

Oh, don\'t get me wrong, mine has broken down. A lot. But generally just due to stuff being old and wearing out rather than anything to do with the rotary engine being weird or fragile or whatever, or because its a performance car. Get 20-odd mpg depending, I suppose

You also need to check out the insurance costs - they aren\'t going to be cheap for you ;)

They are ok for short distances, as long as they are proeprly warmed up before turning them off, i just personally feel it\'s a waste and doesn\'t do them justice :)
But then again, I\'m still in awe of mine.

ive had mine now for 4 years and have gone from standard to quite highly modded with T04r single turbo and have never had a problem with flooding, never had any engine problems only issues i have had are with the standard twin turbo pack, i have had it rebuilt at around 68000 miles but this was through choice it didnt have to be done but as i was tuning it quite a bit thought it would be worth doing at that time.  If you were considering buying one and driving it like a granny all the time then there is no point in having one lol.  I have mine as a weekend car so have a bit of fun in it when i do take it out, i dont go mental dont rag it constantly, you just have to have respect for a car if you abuse it it will bite you in the ass eventually.  Its the same as any car thou im sure if you abused your 200 something would break on it.  If you have a rx7 well tuned and you look after it will be more reliable then a piston engine in my book, i have mates with imprezas evos skylines all sorts which have been modded and they have had alot more problems with there cars then i have ever had.  People only start getting problems with rx7\'s when they are poorly tuned or not looked after.  I think the rotary is a bit more sensitive to fuelling issues, i.e. if the fuel mapping is not right and you run lean its more likely to cause more damage.  If you have a good mapper you should have no problems.

by the way welcome to the club i hope that helps :Thumbsup!

Yeah, it has been this year, but then everythings just went wrong at once. The two previous years, I barely needed to spend anything beyond basic maintenance and buying shiny bits lol :Giggle

Think of the cost of parts for your 14a. Triple them. At least.
On the plus side, the VSXX\'s may fit.

ive only ever heard of people having problems if they drive them like a granny all the time, odviosly you have to just drive normal some of the time, like i go to quite a few shows that are quite a way from me 3-4 hours and i just take it easy up there but still now and again give it a bit of boost.  Look after it and dont abuse it and you will be fine

are you an experienced drifter?
you might wanna pop on over to driftworks and ask about 7\'s. They\'re considered hard to drift as they have a 50:50 weight distrobution, though they can be drifted well.
also how much are you looking at spending. theres a 3 rotor on driftworks going for about 9k. Also its not turbo charged so it should i theory last longer a turbocharged 2 rotor. Tho thats an edc spec car :D

Also when when it comes to drifting fd\'s before you go for power your gunna wanna go for decent cooling as these engines get hotter than piston engines, especially when drifting.

nah not really but im getting on the track as much as pos at the minute.. ye iv\'e heard that.. some people say there really good to handle with it etc.. and others say there not good at like you said 50:50 and im not after a triple rotar but around 7k.. and ok thanks mate

well its got about 350 bhp i belive and isnt turbo charged, turbo charging is one of the biggest reasons behind why these engines go pop, so its an ideal drift car.

well they handle well as track cars, but the 50:50 distrobution means its very easy to change the angle in a drift, which can result in spinning out.

oh...and they\'re the best looking cars about, dont forget that :D

Hi mate,

I have owned my 1997\' FD3S Bathurst X for just over a week. I too had the simular questions to you and can honestly say most of what you get told from tuners is total rubbish (Jealousy!). Yes the shelf life of a rotary is less than a pistoned engine but they fire 3 x as much...!!!

I have had some serious motors in my time and am chuffed to bits with my totaly stock RX7. Mine has done 55,000 miles with an engine rebuild 5,000 miles ago.

I don\'t drift as the cost of tyres is a real pocket killer, but i do enjoy dusting Scooby\'s and just about everything in my home town.

Get an FD with a low engine mileage and a good general condition and you won\'t regret it!

I do 36 miles a day and return roughly 20MPG depending on wether i get excited or not.

They are thirsty but my god its worth it. They turn heads too!
