Post by: ace-rx7 on October 26, 2008, 01:30:07 PM
Hi
Just finished off my v-mount setup and run the hole day at pod drifting and the setup works well, i have a alloy rad to go in place of the standerd one thats on there now and some ducting to fab up to keep the air going where i want it.

Looks good, i have the same intercooler mounted low in the nosecone, but was thinking of mounting as v mount too, what intake temps are you getting

No access to a comander at the moment, so unsure ?, still heat soaks when stood still ! and freezing cold after a run. I am even tempted to fit a fan on the top of the ic.

Ok, well since i put mine in the nosecone the highest temps this year on warm days have been 46c, that is in standing traffic getting out of santa pod, around town 40, motorway 33-37c i tried an Ford RS Turbo fan on the back of my intercooler and it made no difference

with the vmount set up do you have to move the radiator? i know you have to move the battery etc

looks good!

Any chance you can show us how you did the brackets to hold the rad in place and what you did with the rad hoses?

Im really interested in doing this myself :)

Also, what about adding a divider between the 2, like the revolution? or hks v mount kits...perhaps that will stop the heatsoak

Cheers

Jon

some of it is a little pikey spec, but will make up better brackets now i know it works

i just used some strips of metal and built l shaped brackets off the support that runs in front of the engine. then i bent them over ontop of the radiator when bolted on, so ic sits tight ontop at the back so the air cant pass between them. had a few tabs alloy welded onto the ic and its monted via some rubber bush thingys so it can flex.

I guess you will always get heak soak with the ic in the engine bay, as long as temps get down quickly while on the move i will be happy.

Do you still have fans on the rad? And what did you do with the bendy pipe that usually sits in the gap shown here? (also what does that pipe do??)

It\'s a cooling pipe for the power steering, if you mean the serpentine metal pipe. IIRC you can just cut it off and join the cut ends with a bit of hose or whatever if you don\'t want it to be in the way. Not sure it serves much purpose.

Top work on your DIY V-mount, dude! Nice effort :Thumbs-up

yeah still keep the standerd double fans and undertray. I did have to dispose of power steering cooling pipe, just looped it with high pressure hose. I might even loose the ps all together in time.

Thanks for the info guys. Ace did you manage this without removing the front bumper? (can you tell i\'m thinking of doing this myself lol)

hey mate, just about to order a v mount kit curtisy or ebay lol but also got a couple of questions,

1, can you change the angle of the radiator with out disconecting it?

2, can you still keep the power steering cooling pipe where it is?

From what I did with mine, no and no.

If you change the angle you need to change the pipes as well, so that\'s out of the window :D
The PS cooler it a total PITA - I rust removed mine and replaced it with a straight hose from return to reservoir.

Rad pipes you have to change & doctor, but the PAS cooler you can keep, you have to tweek the pipe a little, but it does fit under the rad (or it did on mine!!).

Removing the cooler is a bad move as the fluid runs at a stupid temp believe it or not....... you can get PAS coolers that use the engine coolant to cool the fluid, so that just shows you the temp this stuff opperates at!! you are looking at arount 90 - 100c!! so with out the cooler you are going to overheat the steering rack resulting in more ware and slightly sloppy steering responce ;)

Bobbit - yep front bumper was not removed to complete this.

gandyrx - nope you will need to remove rad to reposition, you will also need to play with the hoses to get them to work ie cut and rejoin( i have just bodged them for now,but will get decent ones made locally) and yes i could of kept the ps cooling pipe but bent it so much trying, i didnt like the angles it had so just removed it.

jonofd3 - ideally would of kept, but car ran all day sat at pod, lock to lock drifting and had no probs with temps from any fluids

Interesting!

I have that IC, I take it you got someone to weld that mounting bracket to the IC?

Any pics of the hoses from the rad to the engine?
