Title: New Owner needs help
Post by: riber3 on October 26, 2008, 12:44:11 PM
Hi here,

I have a friend who has just bought his first RX7 a turbo2 convertible and is after a haynes manual for it presumbly 1985 to 1989 model book also he is after a hood cover for it. The one that clips over the soft top when its it the down position.

Additionally the rev counter isn\'t working and is there an auto choke as it doesn\'t tickover when you first fire up from cold?

Any help and advice would be most welcome and I will get him to join up as soon as he gets back as I have told him all about how great the club is

the tannaue cover ( one thats sits over the roof when down ) are pretty rare and not the easiest things to get hold of ( unless you have deep pockets - new ones are about £350+vat )

the haynes manual isnt that good - you are better with the factory service manual which is available all over the net

and rev counter - i think that works off one of the coils - so could be a bad wire thats all

and there is no choke as such - depends on how he is starting it and if its a jap/uk car

if you start it with the clutch down - then it bypasses the AWS ( auto warmup system .. or summat like that )

not sure if the jap cars even have this though ???

Thanks for the info I will get him to look for a factory manual as for the aws what does it look like and whereabouts is it in the engine bay? Is there any test I can do for him to check that its working?

Cheers,

Paul

Not all JDM cars have the AWS, mine does not and even the manifold screw holes are not there.   The \'choke\' bit just may well need adjusting, its at the back of the manifold and is adjusted by a screw. The AWS simply revs the car to 3000 rpm, you can disconnect that and simply rely on the thermo side of things, its all mine has and it still raises the revs when cold but not as much as with AWS. Its the thermo bit you are adjusting, i will try to get a pic but may not be tonight.
The Haynes manual is ok for quick info but get the service manual, far better.. I have printed mine out and I kid you not there are over 1500 pages.  Its in 2 very thick folders and is far more in depth, perfect for most people who like to get down to the very working of the systems.

The roof covers are flipping rare and it depends how much money you want to spend. I do have two...... but then i have two cars.  Lots of money will only temp me with departing with one of them.

ive printed a few sections of the manuals out and got them binded at work - they do make for good reading

and im like pete - i have 2 covers - but lots of money would need to exchange hands - but i only have one car - i just like having spares :D
