Title: Dashboard Flocking
Post by: chrisJDM on October 26, 2008, 09:47:29 AM
Anyone ever fancied having there dash board flocked?? my wife is in the process of starting up a business doing dash flocking, she has purchased all the professional equipment and my rx7 is the first to get flocked.  We have removed the whole dash from the car and have flocked the centre console so far and i am very impressed, heres a few pics:

Looks good.

I like the look and finish of flocking, but do you have any idea on durability?

if you use the right materials can be very durable.  For a rx7 dash its gonna be around £80.

We have just finished doing my dash, just need to let it dry and put it back in the car.

I did mine a couple weekends ago. For £80 i\'d rather have paid you to do it! What a mess it made :Hammer still looks very good in the end.

Good luck!

Excuse a noob question but what is flock? (Looks like you put glue on the dash and then shave a cat over it, lol.) Does look good tho, how long does it last, say on a daily driven car?

Flock are tiny nylon fibres which are applied to an adhesive coated non porous surface, using an electro static charge, so they end up end on into the adhesive, thus giving the velvet/suede look.

flock is very durable, aslong as the correct method of application is used and the right adhesive. I use a two part epoxy adhesive, which uses a hardener.
also allowing the adhesive time to set/cure is essential otherwise the flock will eventually fall out, I allow no less than 36 hours in a heated enviroment.

Hope this helps!

best way to get hold of me is to email me at sophie@southwestflocking.co.uk

It does indeed, am pondering over suede or flocking for mine.

Also I knew it reminded me of something, finally figured it out. Does anyone remember the old he-man figures? Cause I do and the tiger that he-man used to ride had fur that looked just like flocking! Except shorter and orange. And the old Action man\'s hair!

just to give people an idea of price.

Dashboard, centre consoles, door cards, all of these can be flocked as long as they have a non pourous surface.

PRICES

106, starlet, civic size dashes- £60

Integra, subaru, evo size dashes- £80

Door cards- £35 each

dash and centre console- dash price relating to your car + £25

I keep black flock in stock always, there are a variety of different colours if you would like to see them PM me and I can email them to you.

I had mine flocked a couple of years ago by the place that does the parts for Prodrive.

Think it cost about £400 for almost everything from the door cards forwards (in two colours).

soph doesnt charge any extra for colour apart from white trilobal as its more expensive to source in the first place.

400 sounds about right for a company like that:Thumbsup!

Hi Chris, how durable is flocking?  I was thinking about doing one of my cars later in the year which has a centre console along the whole transmission tunnel, but dont know how well it would fair with having my arm/elbow resting on it...

Cheers,
Martin

Flock itself is very durable as it is made from nylon fibres which will take a lot of wear and tear, so would easily put up with the use of armrests etc.
here is a bit of info which is going onto the website which will help you.

What is Flocking?

Flocking is the application of nylon fibres to a non porous adhesive coated surface using an electrostatic charge.

Why is Electrostatic energy used?

Electrostatic energy is used to attract the fibres to the adhesive coated surface end on.
Both the Fibres and adhesive have an electrostatic current run through them so the fibres leave the applicator at a high velocity and hit the adhesive end on so they are stood up, the charge which coats the fibres also makes them very durable

Different uses for Flock

You will find flock in a lot of rally cars and track prepared cars as flock stops glare from the sun reflecting on windscreens; it also acts as a heat insulator and reduces rattles in the car also feels nicer to the touch than plastic.

You will also see toys, greeting cards and clothing may have flocked motifs/designs on them

How durable is flock?

The fibres themselves are Nylon, Rayon and some Trilobal.
All these materials are exceptionally hard wearing and nylon is heat resistant up to 220c.

How do you clean Flock?

Simply with the brush attachment from a hover or if it has become marked, use warm soapy water and gently work away the marking and leave to dry.
DO NOT use any harsh chemicals or solvents as they will remove the adhesive.

I had mine flocked early 2008 and it still looks mint, just give it a hover every now and again to remove the fluff.

You will most likely have my dash coming to you next week. or just after. :)  How much notice do you need to get a different colour in.. rather than black?

not 100% as I need to check with the rest of my team but theres a chance my dash may go green lol.
