Title: How much money would you save on a rebuild if....
Post by: Jim_rx7 on October 23, 2008, 06:37:14 PM
You took the engine out yourself, stripped it to the block and gave it to someone to rebuild.

Then put it all back together and in the car yourself.

My car has possibly just suffered a mystery water seal failure. No overheating etc before hand. And it was on a new rebuild about 3K miles ago. Warranty has run out on it.

Most of the labour costs for the rebuild are the actual taking the engine out the car and stripping it down, if you gave them a short block it would be cheeper :)

you might save a couple of hundred in the rebuild cost - but your engine builder may want to put the engine back in and check it\'s working - particularly if they are offering warranty on it.

Your other alternative is to source an engine - take yours out and replace with the other one - and then sell your old block to someone to recoup some of the costs.

As you would of done all the work of removing the engine, which is the hardest part of a rebuild, have you thought of rebuilding the block yourself, as said you may not get a warranty anyway if you just have the block rebuilt

Yeah mate. I am seriously thinking about rebuilding it myself.

Was rebuilt 3K ago and water seals have just let go for some reason. So should be a relatively easy/cheap rebuild.

Just double check that no water has wrecked the housings or rotors

Don\'t worry. Once it\'s out and apart I\'ll be taking loads of pics etc and putting them up here.

re-worx

The car engine came out of a Cat-D car that had only been rebuilt with 3K on the clock. It came with a 3month warranty from the seller.

Sh*t happens.

Just wait on all the "how do I put this bit there" thread when the rebuild starts! lol

Would you be so kind as to do a thread on how you got the engine out with plenty of pictures too? :)

maybe the engine took a knock n loosened something bud, shame, but if you cn remove n refit a engine then rebuilding shouldnt be a prob, your old ones still going fine.. it had boost issues due to knackerd turbo`s

Yeah mate.. I will do.

If the weather\'s decent, I\'m gonna start tomorrow before I goto work.

Just a bugger with it being winter. Darker earlier etc, so less time to do stuff!

It\'s dangerous stuff that water, you need to make sure it\'s not runing round the internal parts of the engine, or being injected somehow into the combus...

Jim

If I had just bought a car and within a week it tunrs out the water seals are gone, I would be asking a few questions of the seller? i suspect this might have been his reason for selling?

why are you so sure the water seals have gone?

Found what looks like a part of water seal in the AST tank. Plus when it re-started it was putting out LOTS of white smoke.

Also, advice from what some RX7 specialists have said too.

I\'m gonna get it going etc before I do start to the work. If it\'s putting out lots of white smoke again and forcing coolant out the expansion tank I would say it\'s pretty much dead.

Yeah, I know what you\'re saying mate. I\'ve seen the car in the past. Watch it being started etc, etc at different times.

Sh*t happens and all that. I\'ll have it fixed and at least know it\'s ok.

I was gonna have it more or less off the road for the winter anyway.

Thats the spirit lol, you do have to be slightly mental to own a RX7, I think I have spent approx £12k on mine and it spends more time in the garage than anywhere else.. but I wouldnt have it any other way. :Talking1

Good luck with it Jim hope it is all plain sailing!

Yeah... I\'ve taken an engine out before and swapped everything form one block to a bare block. Then put it back in.

I had masking tape and a pen to label stuff up last time. (fuel lines etc)
