Title: Lightness at speed
Post by: Brett on October 20, 2008, 11:55:58 AM
A few of us have been having a conversation via email regarding the notorioius \'FC front end lift\' at high speeds.

Who else on here has experienced the same, and what splitter/spoiler combination are you using?

Can\'t really say I\'ve noticed it too much to be honest. Under hard acceleration it lifts a bit but still feels fairly planted to the ground. What sort of sppeds are we talking, track or road speed?

Track/Private road - usually above 130 though.

i usually get the opposite, though this is when cornering at around 90-100

It\'s better with the front lip on, but generally at those sort of speeds I am not going to be cornering - so as long as you hold on you\'d be fine ;)

I\'d like to come and test on your private road :cool

I wasn\'t talking about cornering...

All are welcome to use my private facility :D

Yeah I\'ve only ever hit over 130mph once (On an mates private road of course) and to be honest I didn\'t really notice if it was lifting. I wasn\'t running with the front splitter on then either. Think its time to test it again.
How much stuff have you got in your boot out of interest?

private facility..? sounds interesting..

i\'ve nt notices front end lightness at speeds.. but my fc is bit twitchy b4 as mentioned about camber on toad n suspension setup (that was b4 i had splitter)

nt been up to high speeds since back in the days.

maybe having the undertray might aid prevent the lift..?

I can\'t remember TBH - the front end has a tendancy to go very light if you hit an imperfection in the tarmac and it can take a few hundred yards to settle down again - not a good sensation.  Not had it in any of the TII\'s - but it happened in one of the EGI\'s I had.

I experienced it today going over a slight ridge on a private road at just under 140, you get the feeling the car has its own ideas on where it wants to go :eek

To be honest though won\'t most cars be like that at this sort of speed? Unless they are set up for track use.

Front downforce.

Mine is an FD but the front end went light on that too.  If it wasn\'t for relatively heavy steering you could easily over correct a bit of speed wobble and have a tank slapper.

Get some front canards, or a more aerodynamic front splitter and tight suspension.

I think a little \'toe in\' aids stability too.  With my aftermarket front end and canards my FD felt planted on my mates private road at over 150!

Private roads are very popular apparently. Wish I had one

Stiffer springs, adjustable shocks, losing a bit of ride height and a front air splitter all help

remember to fit the engine under tray or if you have not got one then get it flush underneath.  This will add to the car being sucked down onto the road.  If maybe your car has a huge wing on the back then at speeds it will push the back end down, if you have sloppy suspension then it might well aid in lifting the front up.  Key here is to have good tight suspension and as mentioned before get a lip or other forms of aerodynamic aids to keep the front end down.  Unless you are racing all the time on these private roads then the likely hood of getting this at normal road speeds ie 70 mph may not be worth the costs.
