Title: Standard FD vs Scoobie vs Evo
Post by: Innocent on October 15, 2008, 03:39:15 PM
Am looking into getting a totally standard FD for sprints next year but need to know if its competitive. It will have to be in the 2lite+ unmodified class, which is dominated by top spec unmodified Evo 6-9\'s and WRX STi\'s. Anyone battle against these on the track? How would an FD fare?

Cheers

Are MR EVOs eg FQ340s etc allowed in this class?

I have a DVD at home, think its a best motoring one where they test a stock FD (spirit R i think) evo, scoob, nsx and somethign else.
FD did very good.

all depends on who is driving it. evo and scoob will be better off the line but you should hold your own through the bends.

Max and Tony race them in the Nippon modified and they seem to do very well.

IF the FD is allowed in under 2.6 litre class (lots of people will class it as a 2.6) it would be best to buy a Spirit R A.

Then it all comes down to skill I\'m afriad as long as none of the big power FQ Evo\' are allowed then you should be a likely winner (track dependent of course).

If a decent driver is in an Evo he will have an easier life than a good driver in an FD, and will push you hard.

A great/execpetional FD driver will trounce the understeery 4WD any day regardless of driver, plus you\'ll have better brakes and a lower COG and neutral handling. The only sub 300hp Evo you might struggle with is the RS sprint.

The main thing is if you can get the very best out of an FD you should be fine. :Thumbsup!

I dont see why the big power evos would not be allowed as it is production, but i\'ve not seen any in the last two seasons. This is a typical line up of the class:

Subaru Impreza2000T
Subaru Impreza1994T
Subaru Impreza2000T
Porsche 944 Turbo2500T
Mitsubishi Evo 62000T
Toyota Celica Gt-41998T
Mitsubishi Evo IX2000T
Porsche GT3 RS3600
Subaru Impreza1994T
Mitsubishi Evo 82000T
Morgan +83528

Think i should be able to mix it with most of them, although the drivers of the EVO 8 & 9 are exceptional, might be something to do with them being magazine long term test cars so they dont think about risk!! Would like to have something different in the class too and i\'ve always adored the FD!

how comes the Porsche and the morgan are allowed in the 2.6 class?? My money is on the Porsche GT3.

The EVO FQ series arent really Production line cars as they have been officially modified in this Country eg Boost and ECU upgrade, exhaust

No, the class is 2 litre +, and classes rotaries as double capacity. Shame, just imagine the glory if they let me compete in the sub 1.4 litre class!!:King

My money would be on the GT3 if only the guy driving it knew what he was doing! Think he\'s scared to scratch it, i managed to put in 4 out of 5 runs faster than him in a standard MR2 roadster on an event this season! Saw him go from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th a blow up the box last year. :2Confused

So are the EVO fq Mitsubishi jobs or tuning companies? I think any kind of Ralliart factory tune is allowed but not aftermarket. That said, you can tune up the standard turbo\'s, and looking at the regs, nothing says you can\'t port it so maybe the FD is the way to go after all!! Very excited about the idea.:driving

just an idea ( so pls dont bite my head off for suggesting) but how about a MR2 Turbo. they quite nippy n i thought they bit quicker than a sillycar GT4.
or a crazy caterham..??

Stock FD with the stock ECU and stock interheater wouldnt last too long in race conditions though.
You would need a mappable ECU and better IC.

yep you need to find out if you are allowed upgraded intercooler,Exhaust,Rad and ECU, if you are then you will have something competitive

Hello,it\'s good to see someone\'re interesting going into sprinting as been doing that for 10+years with a FC.
in my experince(sp),FD\'s good starting car for sprinting but std/mofiy rotary engine car\'s no match against Evo or a WRX.

I\'m not much of a writing explained why it\'s better go for pistonengined but experince(sp) saying from myself.
mine\'s planned for next year\'ll be going for Hillclimb/sprint with13Bpp motor for the last time then bow out for good on Rotaryengine:( as I\'m going into a single seater  (a jasg with 1100cc Piston engined, was thinking about installing a nortonrotary but no!)
If you\'re thinking about going morfiy the RX, better forget about it and  spent good money buy a westie(Rotary!) or ever better a single seater( lots lots fastest, lots of fun and your money back at the end of day when to sell the car)
good luck and have fun going sprinting.

I\'m sure the stock parts would be fine for sprints. A typical day of sprinting consists of about 6 single runs, with about an hour between each run, so only a total of 12 minutes thrashing and about an hour across a whole season!

Thanks for the comments on alternative cars. Unfortunately single seaters, caterhams, westies and elises are out of the question as i\'m 6\'7\'\' tall. Gutted about that, i have access to a Jedi single seater with an 1100cc gsxr engine, tried it and its a great laugh but i couldn\'t spend money on something that difficult to use! Can\'t really see a Mk2 MR2 holding up against this competition either.

Sorry for my ignorance, but is FC the previous generation rx7? I would hope that a 3rd gen should keep up with the competition due to similar power and lower weight. And whilst you don\'t give the forgiving 4wd, i would expect the steering response and grip to be better on an FD?

RotorHeid, what series do you compete in? I\'ve done some ASEMC and AEMC events this year (Associstion of South East / East Motor Clubs).

Not likely in the unmodified class, but i could always go up a class if i find the right car. Problem is modified class requires a full cage so might take some searching!
