will be made out of fiberglass first for tests etc but eventually out of carbon fiber.

Is it going to be completely flat or are you going to make it concave to make a bit of downforce?

The front till back wheels will be flat and just before back wheels it will get closer to the car to make room for fins to take air around back wheels in to the back of the car.
I\'ll post some pictures little bit later on to show you what I mean.

Thanks

Supercool :)

What do you use to cut your carbon with? Dont think my little dremel will do it. I\'ve got an angle grinder with a cutting disk. Will that do?

I use dremel. I guess you just have to use right extensions for it. :)

I can see us all making visits during our lunch break hahaa!
I use a dremel and a jigsaw with metal saw to cut carbon - dust is lethal though!

You maeing all the initial bits in plywood then fiberglassing them?

just wondering if this would only benefit you with smoother under car aerodynamics as the stock undertray is supposed to aid with a bit of cooling? Maybe you could add something onto the tray which directs nice cold air around the engine?

There will be ducts to help the engine to stay cool. Stay tuned to find out more in few days time :)

Ben, I am not using plywood.... its some other board material. But yeah, in theory everything from board in to fiberglass and then in to carbon.

If you dont fancy fibre glass or carbon you could always make it out of aluminium like i did :D
Bit more protection from the odd brick.

How and where are you securing it to the underside of the car???
Was thinking about doing this on mine when I get a little time to sort her out!!

all iv dun is make a big template of it in paper so if mine gets damaged then its only 2hrs work to cut another :D
Secured mine with rivets along the lip and a few bolts everywhere else, Takes about an hour to fit, Only cost £45 for the ally sheet as well, down force was much improved at high speeds but combined it with a rear diffuser at the same time, also engine temps plumited :D

I also have a template from my old yellow car that had R-magic under tray.  I was going to use it get one made in ally...

But it will be good to see how yours full undertray looks and works:Thumbsup!

Think you will be surprised how well it works mate, at hight speeds you will feel like you are being sucked down onto the tarmack

Great looking prjoject, how will you be cooling the diff and gearbox though.
Title: FD undertray work in progress
Post by: maz13b on October 18, 2008, 05:24:08 PM
the diff and gearbox isnt getting much cooling from being open as it is me think but I could always cut down some vents for them.
will see.

How low are you planning on running the car. Its gonna need to be way low to make that work. Also how is the tranny and diff gonna cool ?

Ideally it would have to go on the FDs that are used on track but some people who doesnt have speed bumps could use it everyday.

There are loads of benifits from running undertray on the car.

The cooling of the diff and gearbox is the second priority atm.

But as I have said if it will be an issue Vents will be introduced to help keep the temprature down.

What about exhaust heat, wont it trap it.

Very good point Davyv.

As far as it comes to my mind I believe there are many ways to resolve that issue.

Once the untertray is complite I will address the issue and find the way to keep the heat out as much as I can.

but I believe one the ways to keep it cooler  is wrap exhaust with heat protecting tape or something like that.

Thanks for all the comments.

I would seek profesional advise. I honestly no you will not be able to run the car low enough. You will need to be able to get the body low enough to pogo. this happens when u get lots of negative lift. You need to pay attention to the rear end as the fd has a lot of rear lift. You will need to cool the diff if not you will cook it. I have lots of info on this subject.

reasearch the f 355 . this was the first car with under body tunnels and areo. Also look back at early 80s F1 and how low they needed to run.
In the inquest to sennas death the williams team were running the car so low that the only suspension was provided by the tires. as they heated the car rasied. this was calculated to give the car optimum height.
You cant get that low with out serious mechanical mods.

If i was you i would look at nascar and utalise the front splitter and suspension packer arrangment.

Gillard

Thanks for the info.
Before I\'ve started undertaking this project I have done a bit of research on undertrays and their purpose.
Actualy the first car I looked at was F355 :)

Thanks for all points.  I will do more research on this matter on the track.
What I might do is make extra downforce spoiler unterneeth the car between the fins that I\'ve just done to keep the back on the road.

The front should be well kept on the road with the front splitted.

Thanks

All I can say is nice one and a big thanks!
That will look so awsome and work far better than the Amemiya diffuser!

I think the heat issue can be addressed by cutting into the tray and adding some FRP naca ducts so hot air is pulled out. But that\'ll come once the basic tray is sorted.

I\'ve decided to make this in to 2 diferent versions atm.  One for track and second for road use.

What clearence do you recon should the fins be on the track and road version?

Speed bumps in the UK range from 2" to 6" depending on which local authority /contractor place them.  For the road going one I would consider that when doing your design.

I guess it all depends on the ride height of the vehicle your attaching it too at the end of the day.  As everyone will probably be different.

I remember running my rear diffuser so low it would scrape going up a slight incline lol! Even now my front bumper acts like a bulldozer going over uneven surfaces! But I guess running at only 8-10cm from the ground and I\'m asking for trouble! Completely impractical but damn fun on a flat open road!! :D

This is a very bad, old picture.  But this was taken in the trail stages a few months back when we were offering our defuser up.

I will try and get some better pictures next week

Ours was designed and manufactured by someone who used to design them for f2/f3 cars and similar, so the design and angles used are very similar to that of what he used and tested in the wind tunnels previously.  He has said when mated with our flat floor and front defuser, that we wont really need to run a rear wing if we don\'t want to :rollin  But that would just look silly, so we will just run less angle on the wing.

However i understand that ours wouldn\'t be for everyone, as you cannot run a standard fuel tank etc and a fair bit of modification is need to fit it.

maz13b, how are you planning on having the exhaust exit??

John... by the looks of it you couls run a centre exit system with that defusor.... could be less restrictive ??

Our exhausts are centre exit as we cant have anything coming out in the flow as that wouldn\'t really be any good.
