Title: getting rid of power steering question.
Post by: RobMatthews on October 14, 2008, 02:26:43 PM
whilst looking at my engine bay...

I\'ve thought about removing the power steering pump and bits,to declutter the bay a bit more.
I know atomic rex does the manual racks, but is there anyone else out the doing these?-£700 quid is a bit rich for me.
Or is there another way around this?there is a lot of information circuilating the net about people just weilding up the nipples and then parts failing(i dont fancy crashing my car much), but this information is sketchy and just seems to be people joing the bandwagon etc, saying its a bit dodgy, what does everyone else do? or do you all just keep the p/s?

The scuzz mod is to just loop a bit of hose from inlet to outlet on teh rack, and rip out everything else. Internet rumour has it that this will cause your car to explode in a fiery ball of hate, and sure, it\'s not the right way to do it.
However, lots of people have done it that way, and most are still alive. It\'s economies of scale really - it\'s the right way to do it, but as often happens, that costs money.

Stockpiling stock racks Vs cost of doing it properly i guess :D

FWIW, a friend of a friend with an MX5 said the difference in feel after removing his PS from his Eunos was like the difference going from his 200sx to his MX5 all over again...

I think so long as you have the loop as Sih decribes it with the fluid still in the rack it should ok, seen a few FDs with the simple loop mod and they are ok, Im keeping the PS as it would be a b*tch with out where I live and try to park

A non power Gen 2 EGI rack will take the worry away about safety issues however anyone who has driven EGI\'s will know that you need to be Popeye to park,

If it\'s just a case of tidying the bay why not just remove the cooling snake with 10mm fluid resistant hose after all you have speed sensitive steering on an FD with plenty of feel at speed and proper power steering to park with out the need for spinach

i was maybe not clear its my track car so i feel its not really needed, and seeing as it uses engine power to work i wanna get rid,
Clive are you saying a gen2egi rack will fit? easy as 1-2-3? is the lock to lock and number of turns lock to lock the same?
cheers for the info.

You get a good feel with our rack Rob....and not only that it is quicker.

Plus it looks "bling in the bay"!

you can keep the p/s ,put an electric pump in off a peugeot, citroen, honda etc.  they have remote resevoirs and the pumps can be hidden pretty much anywhere.  this way you get a de cluttered bay, and the drag of the pulley removed from the engine freeing up the motor a bit, and nice easy steering :D

thats the route ive taken.

jamie if your on fduk you will see that i\'ve already decided that,i\'ve had a citroen one for quite a while,if im being finicky its still gonna load up the alternator:D
i will still be looking into taking the p/s off complety but that will be over winter probably now.
