Title: Advice on Split Rim refurb please!
Post by: CharlieP on October 12, 2008, 09:55:34 AM
Hi all!

Just wondering if anyone knows about refurbing split rims?

Is it advisable not to take them apart without knowledgable help?
I\'ve got MazdaSpeed 2 piece 5 spokes.....and was wondering if it\'s something I could tackle myself?

If your going to tackle it yourself good on ya. I had i set done ages ago,and they recommended using new bolts and torqueing them  up to the correct amount.

I\'m fairly mechanically minded, along with my dad so should be able to do it.

I want to find another set of wheels first though, as I get withdrawal symptoms when it\'s off the road for too long! :D

soak the nuts in wd40 or summing the night before, they tend to  seize up quite bad with corrosion and prob will snap lol, u`l prob need a 12 point 8mm socket 2 as thats what most split rims use.. erm what else do i know ummm... if your repolishing the dish its best to have the tyres off too hehe

Iv done a set they are easy to do, undoing the nuts you need an 12 sided
8mm spanner and a 8mm spanner for the back, then youll find that there are 2 plates that come out and the inner of the wheel mite need a whack to get it to drop and then pull it out. just be careful as some are quite hard to undo.

you dont need to replace the bolts, iv done so many wheels now iv lost count, if u do a search iv got a thread on refurbishing a set of the same veilside rims, all i done was cleaned the bolt threads and used a little lock tight, wheels aint fell off yet lol
