Title: Something you have never seen on an FC..
Post by: Retro_Boy_G on October 07, 2008, 11:37:12 PM
Well.. tonight i managed to remove some of the rear wiper that was still attached.. and then obviously have a lovely big gaping hole left from where it all came off.. now, what could i use to fill it i asked myself.. i\'m a big of a gaming geek and own some arcade machines.. i always had it in my head i would try use some button plugs (they go in button holes on a control panel if you don\'t want any buttons in a certain part)... which to my surprise actually pretty much fit perfect.. but i felt i should take my gaming obsession a little bit further.. so i ran up the stairs and grabbed an old 1player arcade button and whacked it on!.. worked an absolute treat!.. probably not to everyones taste but i thought what the heck, no one else will ever have done it.. (maybe this is why haha..). Anyways, if only i could hook it up to open my boot! haha.. so yeah, i think this has to be a worlds first?

needs a bit of a polish and maybe straightened up but here are some pictures..

Glad you guys all like it!

Ada7 - I have thought about this.. I will probably seal it from the bottom.. but to be honest i have never driven this car in the rain/wet and don\'t plan too. it is kept in a nice dry garage for sunny days.. :) . The only time it will be exposed to water is when im washing it. I will just be very careful when it comes to that area.

Thats cool then. Is a funny touch. Your gonna get loads of people pushing it while your at shows and stuff to see what happens. Maybe you should wire it up to some sort of speaker that goes off. Could be some voice just saying \'You just had to go and push it didnt you\' :rollin

Or like in "The Hitch-Hiker Guide to the Galaxy", have a light that comes on in red saying "Danger. Do not press this button again".

Just seal it with black Loctite silicone sealant/adhesive. Nothing shifts that stuff once its set, certainly will be waterproof. Its held my rear lights together with no leaks for two years

You\'ve got to hook it up to the rear washer. Angle the washer up slightly first so that people get wet!
I\'m sure you will be able to hook it up to the rear hatch/lock if you really want to. You\'d need to have remote central locking though to stop anyone just pushing the button to get in. My other FC has had the doors de-locked in this fashion and has a hidden button to open the doors. Although you still need at least one key lock just incase the battery dies so you can still get in to pop the bonnet.

haha.. i\'m thinking something more simple like making some sort of a noise.. i\'m thinking the sound of a toy car reving up or something would be fun.. i\'ll have a tinker with it soon.. i will try something away from the car first and in the comforts of my own room.. as i have loads of buttons..

to be honest these aren\'t the style of buttons i would use on an arcade machine.. these are more American style push buttons.. where as my machines are candy cabs from Japan and have more flush and less chunky looking buttons.. but none have the little single player logo on them so no one would really get it..

Now all you need is an Atari ST joystick, and a flat screen TV mounted outward facing in the rear window, and all your retro dreams can come true :)

I think you should get 3 miles of wire connected to it and hide the wire all round the car.  Export the car to Japan and they can then know how we feel with the "whats this" :evillaugh

haha.. some great ideas guys! I\'m going to have the windows tinted before i do anything with it.. I\'m going to try do the tints myself.. it\'s not going to be easy but its worth a bash before forking out £££ for a pro to do it.. especially when the film only costs like £10!! The back is going to be 5% limo black.. (very pimp). The driver and passenger will be the darkest legal tint.. which i believe is about 70-75%?.. I\'ve ordered the tint for the back first to see if i can do that first.. quite looking forward to trying it for some weird reason..

Anyone else done it?

P.S. If anyone is thinking of removing their back wiper then i can supply arcade button plugs which fit perfect and sit flush with the window. OR of course i can sort you out with a button.. hehe! :)

when pushed have a pre recorded computer voice from startrek saying self distruct in two minutes with loads of strobes in behind the tint of the back window.

as your gonna try tinting urself then the bast advice i can give is for the back window. get a mate or 2 to help u.

step 1
u need to get the film and b4 u cut it.. place the whole film over the rear window on the outside of the car n pull it taught.
make sure u get it the right way round as when u open the tint packet it should show u which is the sticky side that needs to be placed against the inside of the glass.

step 2
then get a fren to hair dry / heat gun it so it warms up a bit and will bend with the curves of the window. then let it cool.. this will give the film some shape.

please do not miss that step out!!! very important!!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!

step 3
then once its got some shape to it clean the inside of the window.
cut down film a bit to make it bit more manageable.

step 4
wet inside of the glass with warm soapy water (lil bit of fairy liquid in a squerty bottle) then spray on window.

step 5
remove  the protective layer on the tint n squert the tint with soapey water n place onto glass. (dont worry, the tint will not stick straight away and can be easy positioned)

step 6
get like a credit card or sth similar (plastic with flat edge, if using credit card wrap it inside a kitchen towel so less likely to scratch the tint) then apply n scrape the air out of the tint.

step 7
once u get to the edges then get a very sharp blade n cut round the edge to fit n squeeze rest of the air out.

if u find that at some areas at the edges the tint does not stay stuck to the glass then apply a bit of heat (heatgun / hair dryer) to it. that will soften the tint so can shrink a bit n fit nicely.

job done!
-----

i suggest u do the side windows 1st n leave the back til last. side windows r easier n can learn as u go along.

with the side windows you can just place tint straight on without heating tint on the outside (ie start at step 4)

again if there are some areas where the tint does not stick then heat it up a bit n then go over it with a card to get air out.

last touch for the side windows is when u cut the film around the upper edge of the window cut it so that the tint does not stick out over the edge.
finish it off by sealing the tint to the glass with clear nail varnish once the water is dry.
this will ensure the tint does not get pulled out when the window closes and rubs against the top rubber bit on the door.
---

best time to do the tint is on a warm (ish day) out of direct sunlight. the reason for the warm day is that the air is less dense so can get more air pockets out n then when its a hot day theres no air to expand causing bigger air pockets in tints..

i hope this all helps n makes scense =)

good luck. =)

oh.. also.. if you do **** it up.. try nt let the tint dry out as when u take the tint off when its dry it leaves sticky crap all over the glass which is a bit of a bitch to get off again!!

the more water the merrier =)

for the push button message, sth like \'theres always one person who has to push the button!\' or \'you coulnt just leave the button alone now could you?!\'

That\'s nice, I\'m liking it :). It would be quite easy to turn into a boot popper- mount a solenoid somewhere solid along the boot lock cable path & cut away a bit of the plastic & crimp the cable on... then the button can complete the 12v circuit!
