Title: RX-2 high speed car?
Post by: robzter on October 05, 2008, 04:15:48 PM
Hello im owning an FD right now and im kinda got sucked in to the old school thingie. im looking for an 616 to build a rx2 from and im wondering, is the rx2 a good high speed car?

im thinking about an 13B twin turbo. I know its not the most aerodynamic car out there so im not working on that part. just want to know what should be done to make it more stable at those speeds. tranny i believe ill take one from the FD. what do you think about this setup? this is a long shot project ;)

best regards

// Robin

I used to race a standard RX-2 sedan. I was clocked at 164 Km/h once on Kyalami - no problem.

Hi, great project. In Aus there are several RX2 running very quick times up the strip pushing 600bhp+. I guess anything is possible if ou have the engineering skills and money to throw at it.

Us Magazine  " Road and Track " tested the RX-2 and specified a top speed of 125MPH.

ok so if i change the engine to an FD engine and the same with the tranny i should be able to go faster. but the next thing is how does it handle att those speeds ;) i dont want to fly of the road at the smallest wind blow

Thing is its not just about the engine and tranny.  Brakes and fairly good ones will be needed if you intend to do some high speed stuff. Also look into how to strengthen the car, braces are good and other devices to get it stronger.  You are delving into the modern big HP engine into an old frame and you must tie it all together perfectly to get the best out of it.  The Aussie site as mentioned will have so much info on this setup and what you can get out of the car power wise safely, they are so into the old school stuff and you will bound to come across the answers you need.
Sounds as if you are totally up for it so dont forget the updates and pics.

Go join Exile so you stay on both UK forums

Think you will find there is a guy on there that has done what you are looking for

there is //www.ausrotary.com as well.

but ya biggest problem is fitting the block and twin turbo\'s inbetween the chassis rails.. ie good luck

to do that (keep twin turbo) would mean the engine would have to be "side saddle mounted" ie off to one side. which would greatly affect the cars ability to keep a balanced weight (especially for high speed).

single turbo would be a much easier mod

Robzter,

Best bet is to put a Series 4 Turbo engine in - this can be done with minor mods and a custom exhaust manifold (run the engine with a Microtech or similar).  My RX-2 (15 years ago now!) was quite stable at high speeds (would sit on 200-220km/h for periods of time).  Main problem I found is that the bonnet itself started to actually lift up - as they are old cars, and they didn\'t use spot welding for the bonnet itself at the very front.  So even though the bonnet opened the other way, I use to see mine slowly rise up the faster I went (the metal itself came apart from the brackets).  Ended up bolting it together (was a racecar anyway!).

But RX-2\'s weren\'t designed for high terminal speeds, like an FD (FD has the aero, and the transmission, wheels, tyres, gearing, basic engineering for higher speeds).  RX-2 for example only has the 4 \'bolts\' holding wheels on as standard - which is a horrible setup.

Many people have converted the hub/wheel set-up to a 5 stud/nut - at the same time they upgraded front brakes and differentials/axels/brakes.

Like anything, spend the money and your RX-2 will be as good as a newer car at high speeds.

There is a Turbocharged RX2 in the UK. Jason i think his name is. Try the link that g11ary put up, that is an older webste. There is even a owner with a RX2 coupe capella! Super ne?!
