I\'ve got a bit of a problem with my FD.I bought it a few months ago and it\'s always had this problem but now it\'s really starting to bug me...
Basically the fan wont come on unless the A/C is turned on...
Anyone any ideas whats wrong/how to fix it?
what fan is this
Assuming it\'s Rad fan, what temps are you running?
If it\'s on standard setup, IIRC the fan comes on around 95 deg C and goes off once down to 85 deg C (something like that anyway).
If you\'re not getting hot enough to need it on, it wont come on..
The turning on of the A/C switching the fan on is a standard feature, and something a number of people leave as a feature even with A/C removal (useful fan on/off switch in the c0ckpit!).
I\'d have a look over your running temps and see how hot your engine gets. Don\'t trust the standard temp guage though - it\'s of little assistance!
Daz,
I have the same problem, Pip @ WGT said I have a fault on my ECU ( which is stock ) I also overide the fans with the A/C switch.
I have a replacemnt ECU which I\'m going to swap over.
As Aceman said, what temps are you getting to? I have a water temp gauge so I can see what the temps are, but if you don\'t have one or a power FC unit you won\'t know. Stock gauge will only buzz and light up when it\'s too late!!! :2eek
My advice is, until you get it checked out by someone to ascertain if your fans are or aren\'t coming on, keep your A/C on, or at least when your sitting in traffic, to be on the safe side.

Yeah it is the rad fan. I\'ve only got the standard temperature gauge at the moment and as said its not that much use. Is this a common ECU fault?I have a RE Amemiya ecu waiting to go in.
No idea if it\'s a common ECU fault, to be fair it might not even be an ECU fault, it is in my case though!
I think my car had a power FC fitted before I got it ( the holder was mounted to the dash ) so not sure if that had anyting to do with the fault after the unit was removed.

Might be an idea to check the relays on the driver’s side inner wing, take them out 1 at a time and see if there is any corrosion etc.
Had the same problem, no cooling fans but they came on with the AC, traced the fault to a broken wire from the Thermoswitch, This wire goes to relay number 3. The Thermoswitch is on the back of the stat housing, (alt off job to get at it) while i was checking this i fitted a lower temp Thermoswitch marked 90c off an earlier model, i think standard is 108c so my fans come on a little earlier. basically this switch grounds the wire from it\'s plug at the temperature marked on the side, fitting an aftermarket guage for water temp is a very good idea
Good luck Bob
