Title: Cosmo - starting issue
Post by: johnf on September 30, 2008, 03:15:20 PM
Strange fault with the Cosmo.

I starts first time in the morning but after it\'s warmed up I have trouble with the starter motor.

I turn the key, can hear the \'click\' and the fuel pump but it won\'t turn over.

Now the interesting thing is that if I hold the key in the start position eventually it fires, this can take up to two mins, how strange.

So I\'ve been looking at the wiring to the starter motor, there are some aftermarket wires [see pic] any ideas what these do?

Can\'t help you with the pic John, but my cosmo has/had the same issue.  I\'ve swapped out the main relay and the Egi relay to see if that cures it as the ecu wasn\'t seeing enough voltage to fire the injectors.  The fuel pump would whine, the starter motor would work but no turn-over, neither did it flood.

Regards
Jon

They look like fuses - maybe it\'s some strange intermittent contact thing - as the car warms up the contact to the starter motor becomes lose ?

Mine has similar problem, but is caused by interlock on brake or park. I have operate in and out of park and/or press and release brake pedal. Never been able to pin it down to one or the other.

My red Cosmo had a new wire direct from key to starter, before I stripped all out.

That\'s a relay and a fuse :)
Could be the relay dieing, although they usually either work or don\'t i thought?
My guess is it\'s done it before and that was to attempt to fix it.

If you give the starter a whack, does it help? if so, it\'s often new starter time.

If you decide that you need a new starter i have a second hand spare one plus the one on my car that i may consider breaking (gearbox issues).
