Post by: rx7ben on September 30, 2008, 01:35:22 PM
Would a 340bhp Rx7 imbarass most of the Evo"s out there. I havent ever driven a evo so i dont no what there like. My dad had a Evo 6 makkinem eddition before i was old enough to drive and i remember that being quick.

ive had a evo 4 running 325bhp, its hard to say would that kind of rx would leave and play with the evo due to the driver and road!, 0-100 there wouldnt be ne thing in it, over 120 the rx7 would pull away, evos are good for 145/150 all day and get there quick! straight line the rx7 would win but cornering no way the evo will paste u! be carefull!

I dont plan on chasing any EVO"s round corners :Giggle
What evo did you have was it one of the older one"s tuned or was it one of those FQ"s

i had a 1996 evo 4, uprated the brakes, exhaust and boost controller, on the rolling road it was 324bhp. there was no lag and the turbo didnt drop off at all, only good for 150mph though, cornered so well u wouldnt believe but nothing compared to a drive of a rx7 tail end happy!

Are you running similar power on your Rex.
I wanted to ask as my brothers got a Impreza and it gets to 100mph really really quick but then it slows down so i didnt no if the EVO"s were simillar

All these versus battles are a waste of time, it all comes down to the driver at the end of the day, I disagree with the EVo will leave an RX7 through the corner rubbish, a good driver in both cars they should be equal in fact EVOs suffer from understeer ultimately. If you see those touge battles vids the RX7 always seems to have the edge round the corners. The fact is an EVO is easier to drive quicker then the RX7 given average driving skills in both, thats why EVOs seem quicker through corners

Yes this is very true driver skill is a big impact. For arguement sake lets just say straight line power. Im just trying to get an idea of where my car stacks up againsts other cars.
I did do one of them new Porshe cayene s (least thats what i think its called the one in between the Boxter and the 911

I had an EVO 5 before the RX7 tramlined like hell, changed suspension & had 3 lots of geometry done never sorted it out much happier straight or corners in the 7,power wise the EVO was 279 atw RX is 305 atw but the EVO was definately quicker off the start

4WD will always have the better take off... Normal road conditions like..
But I dont understand how people can say they handle better than an FD...
There was a discussion on IrishRotary about the FD against the GTST Skyline and some of the lads said the Skyline handled better!!!! WTF? :3Confused
As BlitzBoy said its all down to the driver... My cars fairly tuned and anytime an Evo\'s put it up to me ive left them for dirt... In saying that there are 1 or 2 of the lads i know that would keep up no problem if they were behind the wheel of an Evo...

id say the evo would do better on the handeling because of the 4wd and depending what model the yaw controll and the other mountain of technical goodies the evo normally has, but in a straight line and drift wise the rex any day,
i can understand ppl saying about the GTST handling better than the rex because of the HICAS system but its down to driver preference and power to weight raito, a 400bhp rx7 would be quicker than a 600bhp GTST as the skyline is heavier and imo abit slugish, the rex however is abit more nimble and fun to drive
its all down to the skill of the driver at the end of the day

Surely a lighter rwd car with a 50:50 weight distribution should come out over a heavier 4wd car through the corners in normal weather conditions?
but yea its deff about the driver.

Before actually buying the RX7 I tried both the Evo 7 and the four wheel drive Skyline GTR 34 both cars had tremendous cornering ability and after driving a while you take the cornering capabilities of both cars for granted and start to drive at stupid speeds around corners and roundabouts just because they are both so capable which is where in my opinion the RX7 was my preffered choice because it felt like the limits of your ability were more apparent in the RX7 than the other two but thats where smart/clever technology can rob you of goood old fashioned feel. And as said before driver ability does have a lot to do with it.

I think it\'s easily proved that the feed fd is togue champion (not sure if it still is) so is obviously a better handleing car. An evo is certainly going to be quicker to 60mph but evo\'s are generaly owned by people with no talent and just want to go fast the only more talentless drivers own scoobs.

If anyone has seen the togue battle between the TT FD from RE and a 600hp GTR you will know there is no way a skyline can out corner an FD. This FD was so fast through the corners it opend a huge gap.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfiiBrQ3tOE
I have been on the race track with a 700whp GTR33 with my low power setting of 470whp, Due to his weight he could not get more than 3 cars away from me on the straight and under brakes I would catch him.
I would say due to 4x4 the GTR and Evos are much much easier to push hard and get great times, their grip level is insane but this can happen if you push it too far. Take note, the white FD is me and the GTR that stacks it is the 700whp monster that could not leave me behinde. Since getting used to my car and the semislicks I have come down to a 1.04 and the GTR is a 1.02 with 230whp more.

Let me tell you all about A 12a bridge ported Gen 1 rx7 belonging to dwayne from Lindop Motorsport, Last friday we all went to Ty Croes (Anglesey race circuit) for a track day, dwayne took me round the track and smoked a EVO 8 on the track, but then again he was also not that easy to shake in my Fd, Respect to Dwayne, 1.2 N/a keeping up with most things

Its all down to drivers for the majority of these races. Give me an Evo and I will give most Rx\'s a good run for their money, no different than the scoob I had. Give me an Rx and once again....I will take on anything. But this is on the road, and I\'d like to think, given my track experience, Id have a few more tools up my sleeve when things go a bit pear shaped.
On the track, the Evo\'s are lapping Combe in 1:11\'s. This is slick shod, so identical to my car last year, yet I could only get as low as 1:13. They do have a bit more horse power than I did, but the car was on the total limit....I don\'t think I could have eeked anymore out of the damn thing!
So don\'t underestimate the Evo.....on a bumpy road it will annihilate an Rx, as you just wont be able to get the power down.

each has its own strengths and weaknesses, it all depends on what the drivers like and what you want out of it, the origin of the evo and the scoobys mainly comes from development in rallys so down bumpy roads, gravel and handeling etc the evo and scoob will have the advantages, but the rexs origins come from being built mainly as race car and for speed rather than handeling, they are both wicked cars with their own strenghs and having owned a scooby the rex just does it better for me in every way :driving

The whole point of this discussion was to inform our friend here if he would be able to beat an EVO.
Id say yes on the motorway, Top end the EVO cannot keep up, Their darg co is crap compared to FD\'s. Too square and angular.
Are there any 6sec EVOs using EVO motors? Not sure if I have ever seen one get to 6sec. I think there are some 8sec ones around but not as many as there are 7sec Rotarys.

I think that has been done quite nicely??
On an A road, then no....I don\'t think an Rx7 would beat an Evo
On a Motorway in an out and out drag race, then yes and no the top speed of an Evo is 175.....difficult to find an Rx that will get to that speed on standard gearing. Plus I don\'t know if you\'ve been at that speed....it is a tad scary!
So I think all you can conclude is....Driver Driver Driver

Had mine up to a truly frightening 172 at bruntingthorp (timing beams, not speedo) and to be honest the rex didn\'t feel to bad. a bit light up fromt but not uncontrollable.
You don\'t half cover some ground though that fast.
That was back some ~75bhp ago so I reckon 178-180 is possible on a cool day.
Unfortunatley fragged a rotor tip too that day!

Atomic, how much of a horsepower disadvantage were you at mate....?
Obviously the lighter total and especially unsprung weight and more efficient transmission means that at the same bhp an FD will always have the edge over the Evo but only in dry conditions ! :D

We were running about 360bhp last year.
The 2 areas of power are straights and corners.
On the straights Id welcome another 500bhp....that would embarrass those damn radicals. But in the corners I was battling getting the power down without having to constantly correct oversteer. The other problem is getting to a corner faster will often actually cost you speed within the bend as braking hard will cause you to over brake. I\'m sure there is another 3 seconds to be found at Combe. I\'m confident we can get to a 1:10 and ideally Id like to be able to dip into the 1:09\'s the changes we have made to the car will certainly see it move into Class C, and so we have to play with a very quick Lotus in order to start taking wins. We have invested a fortune into suspension set up....hopefully it will be the key as we have now managed to reduce camber control and diminish roll centre control from 18mm to 0.8mm This has allowed us to run effective downforce and lower the car to an ideal level without compromising the roll centre control

I have an evo 6 gsr with a fully forged Norris Design engine running 1.5 bar (incidentally its for sale), and before that i had a tommi mak, and to be honest a standard tommi running 0.8bar, i think the rex might have the edge on it. but if the evo was running 1.5 bar which any evo can run with out any mods then i think it will be very close, i don\'t know which i would put my money on if they were driven by equivalent drivers

I will have to drive one just to see what there like.
Defentley prefer the rex tho, how many Evo"s do you see a day. And how many Rx7"s :yes:yes
From my little knowledge is it not true that you can only do a few 0-60 thrash in a evo a few times, then you need a new clutch.
I remember when my dad had is makkienem 6 he went threw a couple of clutchs and brake discs and pads every couple of months. Then it was being serviced like every week (lol) could and evo be more money to run the a rex :rollin:rollin

i think the 4wd on evo\'s are overrated - i notice that you can still get bad understeer... so whats the point?
you know your FD will be truly sticking to the road and is more predictable round corners...
Title: Rx7 vs Evo"s
Post by: AtomicRex on October 04, 2008, 08:36:23 AM
Ive never experienced bad understeer at all with the Evo....likewise the Rx has never understeered....but thats mainly because both cars are set up correctly.
The level of grip you get from an Evo down a country lane is awesome! Round a circuit and on A-roads both are incredible.
Personally I don\'t like the looks of an Evo, as the Rx is one of the most beautiful cars on the road today. However as a hack that will get 4 people from A-B quickly it truly is brilliant car to run with.
