Title: Oil Pressure
Post by: nikp on March 26, 2004, 10:36:43 AM
Does any one know what the oil pressure is meant to be on the FD at idle? I would like to know if mine is at all wrong!

I have just the standard guage, and I don\'t think it\'s too accurate - normally reads near the bottom when idling and warm.

Goes up to halfway at around 3000rpm ish.

Mines pretty much the same - that\'s why I asked!

..ditto!!!

my standard gauge is naff!!It\'s all over the place..up,down...when u rev it moves...aaarrgghhh!!!I\'m assuming an aftermarket gauge would be different???had spotted a new HKS device called \'Camp\'..working through a AV monitor..looked very nice..would that be a more accurate reading do you think??Anyone??

I worry about most things on the car but have got used to the guage \'wandering\' around.  If there was an oil  problem with my car it would have shown itself by now (tempting fate so touch wood etc etc). Thing is there\'s not much you can do about it if you have low oil pressure anyway.

Also I wouldn\'t want anything \'Camp\' in my car.

nope an aftermarket oil pressure gauge should also move, but it should give you a more accurate pressure reading.

I think the pattern of oil pressure you have described is perfectly normal for most non rotary cars too.

My bro\' who is quite an expert with cars (but not rotary engines) as he used to be a mechanic - he reckoned that is was quite unusual (if it were a normal cylinder engine that is!) for the car to have such a low oil pressure.

But i figured i\'d check out what the pressure was meant to be on a rotary/FD

on the standard gauge normally the more pressure the healthier the engine, mine was <1/4 so was very close to a re-build, or 1/2 when cold:(

If you look on linney.org it says "oil pressure from cold is nice and high 8kgcm3 upon start up, 6kgcm3 at 4000rpm when warm. At idle 5kgcm3"

Dunno if that helps, mine sits around the same but drops to 4 on idle.

Somebody may need to correct me here, but don\'t the problems with the oil pressure guage stem from the point at which the sensor is located in the engive. From memory the position is on a dead leg so to speak, and can get gummed up etc. If this is true an aftermarket gauge wouldn\'t fix this. The sampling point would have to be improved. I\'m sure there is a tread about this somewhere on here...

At idle mine consistantly reads about 2kgcm3. Thats with an Omori mechanical guage.

6kgcm3 looks about right, im sure mine is about that at that at about that rpm, (working from memory here!!!)

I dont even bother with the OEM oil gauge now I have the aftermarket babies!

PS, Ill check tomorrow to see if my memory serves correct! If it doesnt Ill post up what the reading actually are!!

2Kgcm3 at idle. 5Kgcm3 at 2500 RPM

Hows that?? :-)
