Title: Is my car special ?
Post by: mark-ashley on September 17, 2008, 03:46:33 PM
Looking on the original spec sticker of my car it says "Type-R Special Edition"

What\'s special about it then ?

Were there RX7 that aren\'t Type R special editions ?

yours, like most will just be a type r - if it was a special edition it would have something written underneath Special Edition....

Special is a title heading.  If there\'s nothing written below then there\'s nothing special.

My purple FD was  a type R special edition, has twin oil coolers and knee pad and limited slip differential. Maybe a few other things extra but tbh when they have been modded it makes no difference what they were to begin with.

the main thing is the twin oil coolers :wiggle

Quote from: Somewhere on t\'interweb, so it must be trueRX-7 3rd Generation Models from 1991

the different models were/are type x, type s, touring x, touring s, type r1, type r2, type R Bathurst (1995), type R Bathurst X, type rz, type rs, type rb, type rb bashurst (1997), typr rb bashurst x, type rsr, type r, rb-s, spirit r-a, spirit r-b, spirit r-c, type RB Bathurst R (2001)

December 1991 - August 1993

type x, type s, type r1, type rz were all released in late 91 between 91-93 these were the only rx-7 available in Japan. all were 255bhp

type x was fully loaded model leather seats in black or red, climate control a/c, sunroof, front foglamps,2+2, soft suspension, cruise control, 5sp manual + 4sp automatic, rear strut brace not sure if they had front, main cat only, sunroof, red leather seat models came with full red interior. bose hifi as standard. 4.1 final drive ratio diff 3.9 on auto

the type s is the cheapest model rx7 similar to type x but non of the frills and extras.

Type rz has always been then top rx7 in Japan as well as the fastest. It has bbs 17 inch wheels as standard 4.3 strengthened limited slip diff. not much frills and extras as this was not meant for comfort but out and out sports. It had recaro seats as standard and if memory serves me right was only available in black on the early models. Front & rear strut brace All type rz hold there price extremely well in Japan. The rz had better brakes twin oil coolers and was really designed to be thrashed.

The type r is another of the early models, this was a I believe single oil cooler can\'t remember, front & rear strut brace, I think they had front fog lamps can\'t remember harder suspension than type x & type s models, a/c, no sunroof or cruise etc was a bit like the rz in that it was more a race model rather than tourer. This eventually was called the r1

August 1993 – March 1995

mazda released another type r with twin oil coolers and a few more bits and pieces slightly softer suspension etc and called it the r2 so that’s how the r1 got it\'s name. In late 93 onward mazda released some other versions as well as updating/outdating some of the previous.

type x became the touring x the and when the type x transition into the touring x in late 93 they were only available in 4spd automatic

type s became the touring s.

These were basically the same as the precious models but technical recall issue had been resolved, I can\'t remember what they all were but I remember pre late 93 had issues with the water pump or water pump seal, the pressure of the cooling system was lowered from about 1.3 bar to .9 I believe, the paint was also changed as earlier models suffered paint fade.

type r was now r2. type x & type s were now touring but the rz remained the same. I do not have documented evidence but I believe in 94 the rx-7 was actually a 265 bhp car don\'t hold me to that though.

type rs which was second to the rz only 17 inch wheels different from the other models better brakes the same diff with final drive as the rz but otherwise much the same the others ie a/c, 2 seater, strut brace front & rear etc.

rb which was kind of a new base range along with touring s, They however made variations to this model i.e.

type rb Bathurst, and Bathurst x, in remembrance to the fact the rx7 dominated the Australian 12 race at a track or area can\'t remember called Bathurst. The Bathurst x model had full red interior with leather seats, again though most of these models were otherwise much the same.

March 1995 – January 1996

the r2 was replaced with the type r-s [or just type r]

touring s was discontinued in 95,
from late 95 onwards the touring x lost cruise control bose hifi and leather interior but the rest was the same.

January 1996 – October 1997

mazda again made changes, the rear spoiler was changed, the ecu were now 16 bit instead of 8 bit, the rear light cluster was changed to round lights power was upped on nearly all models to 265 bhp except the touring x.

post 96 touring x models maybe on the others also cannot confirm at the mo that the chassis was strengthened and road holding was greatly improved.

October 1997 – January 1999

mazda did a ltd edition model called the rs-r which was a fancier version of the type r-s these were only available in yellow or black. These had the same wheels as they type r-s but were sprayed black from manufacture. I can\'t remember if it was from late 95 or only from late 98/99 onwards the type rb had a auto model also as 255bhp but manual as 265 bhp.

January 1999 – March 2002

the models the turbo was upgraded so was the ecu boost was increased exhaust back pressure was reduced by 10%
the rear spoiler and front end were changed bhp was increased on type r type rs type rz to 280 bhp the rb was still 265bhp the rb-s was the same but a little sportier, the rb 4spd auto was still 255. New colour was added mica blue and a creamy white for the rz model which came with red interior with red stitching white dials, all post 99 models had boost gauge which earlier models didn\'t, the very latest models that were made were the

spirit r models a being the top b next then c which was also available as an auto, a new colour was added also gunmetal grey
Sort of right - naming conventions are in debate ;)

Sure it\'s not an RII? My RII has the pad and twin coolers :)
Does yours have rear seats? If not then I\'d guess it was an RII, which is a supposedly more driver orientated type R variation.

People seem to generally refer to the basic R and R1 as a type R, and the RII as an RII, hence the confusion than sometimes occurs :)

Everything i\'ve ever read though says that the R\'s and R1\'s only ever came with one cooler. (This is all based on JDM cars, no idea about UK ones)

whats this knee pad you lot are reffering to? For your left leg or right?

and im only going by what ive seen when ive stripped em! Every designated Type R has had 2 coolers. i thought only the type X and Auto was single cooler

yeah my type r has 2 coolers aswell, along with to other people i know! it has no knee pad tho :S unless you mean the pad thing that sticks to the side of the dash?

My \'92 Type-R has two oil coolers.  Though in that quoted text the guy doesn\'t seem too sure whether the R1 had one or two, from what I\'ve seen every Type-R came with two.

Mine i think is a RZ from your other post. Slippy diff, twin oil coolers, black, front and rear strut braces, and the brakes arn\'t standard 7 onescus i had to match the pads up, the listed ones dont fit, an as for the seats whrn i bought it the lad had thems in the boot said he bought them n never fitted them, so might have had the boxes n the t**ts sold them.

All Type-R\'s had Torsen LSDs and twin oil coolers. They just did. In fact, I think all FDs had LSDs as standard

If it was an RZ, you\'d knwo about it - for a start you\'d have had people trying to buy all the shiny bits off you! And you\'d be wrapped in carbon kevlar if it still had the original seats.
As said, all FD\'s have LSD\'s AFIAK, it\'s just the drives that differ.

I\'m still confused about the oil coolers though - when i was sourcing my car all teh R\'s i saw in Japan just had the one cooler :)

IIRC it was just the Touring and base Type-S models that had one oil cooler, as well as other trim differences like no front splitter, only a rear strut brace, that kinda thing, though obviously the Touring had other features like sunroof, cruise control and all that sorta gubbins. I wouldn\'t put too much credence on things like knee pads and rear spoilers (which also didnt come on all models, especially in the USA) to identify specs because they were offered as options, so could be put on a car that would not have had them in its standard specification.

I agree though, that were it an RZ, it\'d be obvious. Cos it\'d say so, for a start!

Indeed, and it would have kevlar shelled recaros, bbm 17" rims, bilstein shocks and the bigger disks, which give it away ;p

all rx7s are special, it was a tossup between an rx7 and the scooby when i was looking, i couldnt find an rx i liked so i foolishly opted for the impreza, at the time i thought it was great but i kept on looking at it thinking maby i should of got a rex, in the end i sold it and bought an rx and i kept kicking myself thinking i should of just got one in the first place
