Looking very good there mate!  I\'d been considering doing something similar but wasn\'t sure how it would turn out.  Looks like you beat me to it, but you\'ve certainly proved you can get good results!!

Keep up the good work

1. apply the resin to the part I/you am going to cover

2. gently push the (cut to shape before hand) carbon cloth into all area\'s getting it to sit as flat as possible.

3. tape the loose ends of the cloth to the back of the object (keeping the cloth tight on the edges of the object)

4. apply a small amount of resin over the carbon cloth (also going just over the edges, making it easier to cut once dry) leave to dry, and do this 3-4 times

5. once dry, cut the cloth as close to the end as I/you can with a very sharp blade to get the same sort of shape as the object (roughly)

6. get the dermal out with a 240grit sanding attachment (big/medium/small wheel) and sand down as close to the plastic as you want to go!

7. one happy with the cut out shapes, flatten the resin with a 240 grit paper with water (once over) then go over again (a few times) with 1200 grit paper and with water again. Make sure you go over the ends to round the edge of the carbon into the plastic so it dose not look as stuck on. Then give it a clean.

8. apply a good coat of clear coat, allow to dry and flatten with 1500 grip paper with water. Then do this again 3-4 times until its a smooth as a babies backside! then give it a polish!

impressive stuff! i was thinking of getting these bits flocked with heaters and gear surround but this looks good!!

How difficult is make the carbon follows the shapes of the panels?
How do you ensure the carbon adhears to the plasic?
Is it easy to cut?

cheers

How difficult is make the carbon follows the shapes of the panels?

Its not really that hard (as of now) as the weave of the carbon opens when you come to a bend, making it able to stretch more, unlike fabric.

How do you ensure the carbon adheres to the plastic?

the resin is very very sticky, even before any time of catalyst is added. Also i for got to add to key the plastic first with 240 grit paper.

Is it easy to cut?

yeah it is, spesh if you use a dremel!

hope thats helps :D

These guys are fantastic, always very helpful, and you can get everything you need from them....carbon, resin, adhesives, etc etc.

If you are litterally just covering stuff, you will be amazed at how cheap it is to buy the material\'s.

how long did it take the resin to dry bud? Also what are you using to measure the catalist, i\'m thinking of using a plastic syringe but cannot seem to find any. But that is a great link bud, great price and i bet it doesn\'t stink like the plastic container mine\'s in, lol.

lol i had a spare plastic syringe in my house from some first aid kit i had.

the resin was set in about 30-40 mins but i waited longer just incase, also it still smells but i do not think it is a strong as the one you have lol!

I\'m gonna start easy so the triangular bits on the inside of the car where the side mirrors are, as they are quite flat, then i\'m gonna see how it goes. Got a syringe from Asda today, only ones i could find was part of a baby medicine measuring kit or in a 1st aid kit, the 1st aid kit was £8 or the baby thing was £1.30, no contest really. Got some cheap brushes too, there were only £3 so i\'m all set now, got loads of wet and dry. Cannot wait

Post by: ENVYD on September 10, 2008, 03:54:56 PM
well you will need (off the top of my head):

carbon (how much is up to you)

resin (1kg kit is a good amount for 40"x46" carbon cloth)

mixing cups and syringe!

mixing stiks

brushes (loads of cheep one\'s will do)

tape (to tie back loose ends)

clear coat

240, 800, 1500 wet and dry sand paper!

polish

Stunning!

Quick question about the resin.  I\'ve still got a load of resin and hardener left over from doing some repair work on my bumper, is that gonna be ok to use the carbon, or do I need something that is specific?
Title: carbon
Post by: Bobbit on September 11, 2008, 09:57:29 AM
I got some UV resistant resin that is normally used in the boating industry, wont discolour in sun light and is 100% water proof. But made sure the resin you use is colourless or you will end up with a yellow tinge to the resin.
I\'m using twill weave too, easier to manipulate aparrantly.

But my list of eqiupment/tools is the same as Envyd\'s,
resin + hardner (i got wax in styrene which helps the last layer of resin stop becoming tacky so sanding is easier),
loads of cheap brushes,
measuring syringe (for the catalyst and wax in styrene)
measuring cup/jug
loads of wet and dry,
duct tape.
Clicky pencil (the small nib end is ideal for sorting out the weave of the carbon before it dries)

Dont forget to paint the undersurface black before you lay on the carbon, this will stop any colours showing through.

I can do a write up if anyones interested?

yeah as rob said mate, you resing will have a yellow colour to it and the hardener will be pink? (what is used for bodge and so on). Polyester resin is probs the best stuff to get for carbon work!

epoxy resin is what is used for carbon not polyester.  thoe in covering dash plastics it dosent mater realy general purpose will be fine.
and your catalist (hardner) should be clear and like water not pink and like toothpaste if thats what your using, thats for premix fiberglass or catty etc.

also resin is various colours. . the resin used for woven roven fiberglass (matted like carbon but is fiberglass) is blue but turns clear when you mix in hardner.

and you can easily just eye the hardner quantites its suposed to be 2-4 %  depending on temps, but as long as its roughly accurate it wont realy make a diffrence as long as you get it down in time. if its just for stuff like above.
i alway measure it but when i was\'nt paying for it i just eyed it

anyway nice work above, should look good in the car.

You could do all sorts if you are just covering parts.....wheel spokes, roof\'s, ally spoilers etc!!
Title: carbon
Post by: karl_tate on September 11, 2008, 10:53:31 PM
does this sort of method, by not using bags and vacuum etc or how they professionally do it, only work with small items??

this has got me thinking and was wondering because i want to take my spoiler off and there will be holes, i could cover it with carbon??
Title: carbon
Post by: Dan Norton on September 12, 2008, 09:13:18 AM
Theres many ways to finish a part....but if you make something that will take a load of some sort then pre-preg,vac bag, resin infusion methods are best.

All you are doing is covering parts that dont take any "load", so you will be safe as just covering your bootlid, you can go as large as you like.
Just makes sure you get material wide enough to cover your boot!

Oh yea....I should have said, carbon fiber destroys all electric motors :( the motor of a dremal (any electrical power tool) draws air through the casing to cool the motor, this then drags fine particals of carbon through the brushes and basicaly burns them out & scars the main shaft!! you can replace the brushes, but due to the scoring on the main shaft, they will again only last a short period of time!! so if anyone is looking at doing anything in carbon, buy cheep throw away tools as they will only last a short time (if they are top quality or not) the only thing that will last while cutting carbon is air power tools as they don\'t use air from the atmosphere to cool them ;)

awesome looking dash mate! might rob the idea of ya soon and do mine:Giggle

quick question tho with regards to painting the engine bay, can you give a bit more explaination on which stuff you moved/removed to paint it, i have been thinking about doing mine for ages coz av just had my car sprayed white from the original red so the engine bay looks cack:rolleyes:

i did a small piece in smooth hammerite with a brush as a test but it looks awful compared to yours,

lol i have a copyright on my dash mate :P just kiding!

when i painted the engine bay i had no intercooler, no intake pipe\'s, no rad alot of vacume pipe\'s where off, then i masked up the parts i didnt want to paint to tuck, used a scotch pad to key the paint and then went over useing just a rattle can of satin black, then over all that with clear coat!

hope that helps!

Best thing to use to cut it guys is a stanly knife, but don\'t let the resin set solid, Allow it to dry for about 12 - 15hrs, then trim it with a knife.... it is still a little flexable and you don\'t put small chips & cracks in the resin ;)

Just took delivery of:

1/4 sq/m of 2x2 200gsm twill carbon fabric
1/2 mtr carbon tape plain weave
300 mls of epoxy resin ( 250 resin 50 ml hardner)
1 pot of high density filling powder
1 pot low density filling powder
3 mixing cups
2 pairs of gloves
2 mixing sticks
2 syringes

Should be enough to get me going... Then I\'ll order some more and see what I can do.
Plan is to flock the dash (got a flocking kit from frosts) then make carbon copies of the heater control and dials face, dome and all the heater vents. Then I can remove the original parts and have pure carbon bits :) light as poss as its a track car.

Wish me luck!

OOoo west systems are good stuff mate.... one thing might be worth bairing in mind though.... The epoxy resin will take ages to go off in the weather we are having at the moment!! If you get some of the builder insulating foam (the one with silver foil both sides) & make a small auto clave using an electric heater!! build a box using the foam (big enough to get the parts you are making in) cut a square hole big enough to get the end of the heater in & seal up around the joints with gaffa tape or sealant!! when the bits are layed up, drop them in, turn the heater on & leave them in there for 12 hours!!

Also keep the resing runny as it will be easyer to work with!! to do this you need to keep it warm as when it is cool it resembles treacle!! another thing you need to be careful of is if you put too little hardner or even too much hardner in to the resin it will not set at all!! think the mix ratio is 2 parts resin 1 part hardner ;)
